Claiming Old User Names

I'm laying the groundwork for better archival tools on Hoocoodanode, and one detail to contend with is the mismatch between registered and unregistered users from the past.

I have written a script that finds all comments by registered names in the old system, and associates them with their matching registered user. I'm also working to associate as many pseudonyms as I can find, which requires manual input. For this I need your help.

If you remember your old handle(s), and would like them associated with you for posterity, please list them in a comment here. One benefit of this to you is that your 'start date' as a user will be bumped back to the first post you made. Another is that any links you might have contributed in the past will be attributed to you.

Also: use the format below, so I can just copy and paste.

'YourCurrentUserName' => 'YourOldUserName',

The comma is not a typo. For example,

'Rob Dawg' => 'Commissar Rob Dawg',

is what I'm looking for.

Thanks,

Your Friendly Neighborhood Panopticist

P.S. It will be painful to reverse these once I've made the change. Please do not misrepresent yourself.

'dryfly' => 'dryfly'

You don't need to enter names that were the same. I'm taking care of that. Only if they were different. And if I remember correctly, you used to be 'dry fly', so

'dryfly' => 'dry fly',

is what I'm looking for.

'dryfly' => 'dryfly'

[always]

I might have commented as emgrasso on the old system a couple of times.
'pythia' => 'emgrasso',

'Rob Dawg' => 'Commissar Rob Dawg',

'dryfly' => there'salwayssomewiseguy...

I thought the user profile number took care of this? It's how I've identified quite a few people.

Anyhow:

'Counterpointer'=> 'Comrade Counterpointer',

The user profile number was established in April, when Hoocoodanode went live and we began requiring registration to comment. Before that, your user id was '0', or anonymous. Each comment had a name, but that wasn't an id.

I think I did a few variationslike "comrade albrt," but always used "albrt" with that spelling.

Dryfly, I'm pretty sure you did use "dry fly" way back.

But then again, my memory is not that great. At one point I had Rob Dawg confused with Getstucco from Ben's blog.

By the way, Ken, that hat tip thingie is awesome.

Thanks, albrt. That was actually the easiest part of what turned out to be a larger project than I thought. Incremental development and live databases are not a good combination...

You don't have kids, right?

I forgot my comma. Now I can't edit because you replied. Can I have another go?

Freaky Coincidence

I started criticizing Google, as otishertz, for giving false results when I searched for my old posts to develop some ideas into essays. Over time the tallies for my number of posts began to decrease as my posting increased and no results were given at all beyond page 3. There were hundreds and hundreds of posts listed as results on top of the google. The highest number of results I saw was maybe 680 and it went down from there.

I went through every post I could find of mine through google and copied it to my word processor. There were conspicuous absences like my florid-duh essay. Also the results that come up first are things like a guy asking me if i am depressed and anything depraved I said. Some of you know me a little...

I wrote about all this here as I monitored the # of results that came up for searching for otishertz and calculatedrisk, hoocoodanode, haloscan, etc. It became a little discussion and others started researching their own posts too.

While I was criticizing google - and facebook and the rest of them - I made a sock puppet screen name spelling otishertz in morse code. Seemed like a cool idea considering I had been criticizing digital media. otishertz became --- - .. ... .... . .-. - --.. AKA code otis.

Soon afterward google altered it's home page with morse code letters for "google." I guess it was Morse's birthday or near Morse's birthday but the commentariat agreed it was eerie timing.

I also was swamp otis. Beyond that I'm not telling! Muaahahaha.

Otishertz, you've registered both names - they can't easily be merged. I can add swamp otis (there's also a swampotis, and a otisHz) to one of them, just let me know which one you'd prefer.

EDIT: I take that back. There is a module that could help with this, if you want to merge the two registered accounts. I need to verify its integrity first before using it, but this would be a useful tool to have on the site.

That one I'm afraid I can't do anything about. Sad

Thanks for this update on names.

'bANK fAILURE' => 'lingy-linger-er'

Juvie hit one of my red hats today. Careful with that Axe Eugene-the Floyd.

edit update1: odd, I just went through JD's recent links through Sat, and the red hat appears to have vanished.

kcoop. are the redhat links invisible on recent link checks while signed in? and does this feature also make redhat links invisible in the "toys"?

The red hats appear the same whether you're signed in or not. Note the red hat will not appear if you use a link that differs at all from another, even if the two point at the same page. So it's not infallible.

The good thing about your information is that it is explicit enough for students to grasp. Thanks for your efforts in spreading academic knowledge.
