Employment Report: 190K Jobs Lost, 10.2% Unemployment Rate

Dude, where is my recovery?

crisis not quite over

Ding-Dong! The Economy is dead!

WASHINGTON – The unemployment rate has surpassed 10 percent for the first time since 1983. Nearly 16 million people can't find jobs and employers cut a net total of 190,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department says.

Large losses were seen in manufacturing,

I thought we were just talking about increased employment in manufacturing???

As a reminder, we need to be adding 125K jobs a month to fully employ all those entering the workforce (just to keep the unemployment rate from moving higher).

The fit has hit the shan.

Green shoots?

Nancy,

We better ram through our health care bill before people have time to get @#$%&! about the unemployment numbers and realize the stimulus was a failure.

SIncerely,
Barack

temporary-help agencies added jobs

Ah, the future of employment in the US. Sans benefits.

C'mon........you didn't expect this Depression to be a "garden-variety" one, did you?.......we're not even into the top of the 4th.......

Novalingus

I wouldn't be surprised to see a down day today. Friday's up move was the lowest volume of the week just like last week Party

MrM, without question these are horrible numbers. I'm digging through the report right now ... ugly.

best wishes

well so much so for ISM report on increased employment in manufacturing. Instead of getting better it got worse minus 61,000 versus minus 45,000 in the previous month. And services which were supposed to be worse turned out to be better. Which report do we throw out BLS or ISM?

Other than that things are downright peachy.

it's all good. benmosche has AIG profitable again...

Do you get spider mites in your garden out there?
My tomatoes finally bit it because they were covered with those damn mites.

Chins up! We can turn this around.

We just need to get people to stop looking for jobs.

The weak in courage is strong in cunning.-- William Blake

Double digits is a lot scarier that I could have imagined.

I was 6 years old last time this happenned.

My reminder is that mfg represents only 10% of the US GDP. This is stunning as the '91 recession was quite profound in job losses.

I think what is note worthy is the big disparity between the household survey and the establishment survey. Loss of 558,000 versus the loss of only 190,000 in the establishment survey.

Another new record...

Of those, 5.6 million had been out of work longer than six months, representing a record 35.6% of the unemployed.

Seriously, ponder that for a second. 5,600,000 people have been out of work and looking for work for more than 6 months. How many cities in this country have populations that large?

Vampire Squid from Hell sucking the bears in..... DOW 11,000, today!

Yikes-a-roony! That was a jump.

Left the house at 5:15AM to look for a job. No dice. No job either.

It's supposed to go down to freezing overnight, so I'll put the garden to bed later on today.

not as bad as i expected... i could see the markets going up 2 or 3 percent today. remember we are out of the recession. unemployment is a lagging indicator. plus... i put my Pitchforks and Torches away. dont worry be happy somewhat ... kay? Sick

Wow the Gold manipulators jumped in the water quick hahahah! how obvious can one get hahahah!

10.2% is U3 rate. An alternative, better measure, IMO, is U6 and that is now:

17.5%

Hmm, will the bench-mark revision in Jan, push U6 to hmm, 22% ?

I also note average workweek hours remain at 33.

I suppose we can't have an economy which delivers pizza to each other after all.

Mean duration (seasonally adjusted) is over 6 months:
July Aug. Sept. Oct.
25.1 24.9 26.2 26.9

These numbers represent hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of Americans who are now falling out of the second-generation middle class and whose children will never make it back in. (As for first-generation middle-classers, it goes without saying that they're being shed.)

Call it the Great Purge.

Is this recession/depression really a continuation of the previous 2 downturns that were bubbled away? If so, this sucker has just begun.

I guess this means no bank failures tonight. Angry

omg if they admit That, how horrible are they really,
disclaimer.i would say that i am a disbeliever,but...

make that would a wouldnt and my coffee sucks too

"Do you get spider mites in your garden out there?"

.....nope........tomatoes are still happy here! No freeze yet.

Most significant thing about the report was there was no sign of any meaningful seasonal hiring. Santa

Every picture tells a story, don't it?

I had to shield my eyes a little looking at all the graphic violence in the charts, the horror.

Service-producing jobs fell by 61,000, including 40,000 in retail.

But, but...yahoo finance just said things were looking great for the Christmas retail season.

Nanoo, please indicate the relationship between Universal pizza delivery and the length of the work week?

Thanks in advance Smile

People stopped dropping out of labor force: it fell by 600K Sep vs. Aug, but stayed almost flat in Oct vs Sep.
As people continue losing their jobs, the unemployment rate shoots up faster than before

We'd better cut taxes so we can cut government jobs and then corporate profits will go up even more, especially in the bank sector. More bonuses, so there can be more consumer spending.

On a positive note- the decline in the work force was very small . This compares with a decline of over 500,000 between the second and third quarter. It may indicate that people are a little more optimistic about finding a job. Alternatively we have hit bottom and people don't have a choice to drop out of the work force.

Oh, and that silly Birth Death adjustment added a fictitious 86Kjobs in Oct to make up this total.

I still don't understand why, if they actually run a benchmark number every month, they don't include the number in what they report.

What's the point of waiting until January and then making an adjustment for the entire previous year?

Volcker - that would narrow the differential to about 270,000 still pretty wide.

Pizza prices are too high so the average workweek is lower. Must find cheaper sources of pepperoni and change delivery methods to horseback.

A side effect of extending UE benefits is that many people may be unwilling to work seasonal retail jobs that pay minimum wages

BSR,

Yeah, I was dwelling on that chart too. Looks like a whole new trajectory from anything we've seen in the last 60 years.

I've been arguing for a while that extended UE benefits should require community service.
I guess my comments have not been reported to the Congress.

it's definitely GDII. Cravath only gave out $7K regular bonuses (and no "special" bonuses) to the class of 08.

Rassmunsen [SP?] said most were. Unfortunately, I deleted all old mail (permanently), so I don't have the link-

Can we even compare these figures to earlier recessions, since this time the service economy (often sole proprietorships not counted in the figures) has been such a growing segment of the employed population? I say we're leaving out a huge percentage of the UE figures by comparing a manufacturing economy (more easily countable) to a service economy (herding cats).

Conservatives (honest ones not right wing nuts) should welcome Obama's election. I think it settles the question of the role of the Federal Government even for die hard Liberals and Progressives. It is clear that any change is not going to come through the national government but rather through the work at the local level. There should be in my opinion unanimous support by conservatives and liberals that what we need is a commitment to "states rights".

With apologizes to Eric,

Take the market on that.

Shill,
That borders on trolling; I'm a conservative, and I voted against BHO, but given the hand he's been dealt, he's not doing too, too bad. I doubt McCain would've been able to do any better, particularly with this congress. Finally, he is our President, and we need him to succeed, or at least not drive us off a cliff.

But centralized power is good for them which is why it doesn't matter how they dress themselves. They didn't get elected to give power to other people, eh?

I have been trying to find a historical comparison between the household survey and the payroll survey. If memory serves me right the household survey although it has much more noise on a month to month basis is more accurate over time.

Can you blame them? It'd be economic suicide for many if they did, since when returning to UEI, their payout would be based on their salary for their last 12 mos. of work. Taking a minimum wage job would really hammer that, unless they were able to reopen their previous claim.

Anecdotal mixed message...

Mrs.B has a couple of very healthy (chotchka) catalog orders. She's working frantically to deliver for the holiday season. (I help out too.)

But a couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to talk with Mrs.B's rep. She told of numerous of her clients going belly up in the last few months. I asked if she (her company) was in danger of doing so too. She said "No... because they hadn't borrowed to expand." In fact, their bank was calling frequently to ask if they'd like to borrow. Hre answer was No, to that too.

I'm guessing you're talking about economic change--not social change--how can that be separated? My solution would be to eliminate federalism entirely--we're one country. Taxes and laws should be universal within our boarders. No more sniping away jobs from one state to another.

This would be a great time to announce a new stimulus package!

"One of President-elect Barack Obama's leading economic advisers said on Sunday he does not see unemployment topping 10 percent... [Lawrence] Summers said he expected further job losses but Obama's economic stimulus package should help limit the rise in unemployment. Asked if he thought the unemployment rate could top 10 percent, he said, 'I don't think so.'"

If not, why is this revision being held off? for political reasons?

When its added in 2010 (when in 2010) - will reported unemployment suddenly jump to 12-13%?

.......+10

M- I believe it is a revision to the payroll number ; the payroll is not used to calculate the unemployment rate that is derived from the household survey. Simply put the payroll number is derived from employers. Employer data can be verified based on the actual taxes paid by employers. When looking at those sources it suggests that the losses on the payroll survey were underestimated. I don't think the tax data allows for it to be done on a monthly basis. So they do it once a year and then track the changes from that revised bench mark.
