We need less Capitol spending.

Honestly, at this point I think everyone knows our economy is going to hell, they just want to get theirs while they can.

Boy, now I'm worried. If there is one thing we have a serious shortage of it's restaurants.

Given many franchisees and small business owners turned to CIT for financing, the drop in capital spending is not too surprising. However, I bet they can pick up used restaurant equipment for pennies on the dollar.

OT from last Pigged

During a Bloomberg interview yesterday, John Ryding quipped that the scariest possible costume this Halloween would be to dress up as the US Deficit. - Perhaps Uncle Sam with a large, dollar sign-shaped timebomb chained around his neck.

-Don't forget the giant inverted pyramid hat labelled "DERIVATIVES" that you have to keep balanced on US Deficit's head at all times

-A placard with a working version of the US debt clock should be added.

Eric Lewis, are you out there?? We're spoon feeding you, baby!

With my SIL in town, that downturn will be slightly less!

Ok, now the downturn is getting worse rather than slowing.

Will any of the MSM point that out?

and a whole bunch of mystery meat from Mexico.

The outlook for capital spending fell considerably from recent months. Thirty-seven percent of restaurant operators plan to make a capital expenditure for equipment, expansion or remodeling in the next six months, down sharply from 45 percent who reported similarly last month.

Do they sample the same group of restaurant owners each month? With a question asking about spending activity in the next 6-months, this decrease seems like a "correction" in the previous month's data, i.e. people scrapping plans after just one month. How's that for a sustainable recovery!

The recession is not over until the restaurant index crosses the halfway point.

Not pennies - the stuff is usually stainless and if nothing else gets sold for scrap.

There's a large segment of the population for whom the "quality" of the (fast) food is a constant - barring roaches out of the fries. So... the only variable is the price. The manufacturers know this and count on it to goose sales when necessary.

Chinese-Made Turbines to Fill U.S. Wind Farm

By REBECCA SMITH

A Chinese wind-turbine company, with financing help from Beijing, has struck a deal to be the exclusive supplier to one of the largest wind-farm developments in the U.S., a sign of how Chinese firms are aggressively capitalizing on America's clean-energy push.

The 36,000-acre development in West Texas would receive $1.5 billion in financing through Export-Import Bank of China. Shenyang Power Group, a five-month-old alliance, would supply the project with 240 of its 2.5-megawatt wind turbines, among the biggest made in the world.

Come to think of it, you could doggy bag the average restaurant meal, and get 2 for 1. Or, you can share an entree, and stop going to places that charge for that. I mean, a typical Big Mac, plus fries and a Biggie drink meal has enough calories for 2, and then some. That goes for the typical KFC fried grease and carbs stuff, too. Small business BK has a new complexion according to this article snippet: Full article here: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE59I1FN20091019

I think this is perhaps important as I'm betting a lot of small business owners have their homes and other assets entangled. Otherwise it means risk models for lenders are really not up to the task, eh...not that they are lending.

By James B. Kelleher

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Recent bankruptcy filings by small U.S. businesses show a trend that could complicate lenders' efforts to identify at-risk borrowers, a new study reveals.

PayNet Inc, which provides analytic tools to the commercial credit industry, looked at 750 small business bankruptcy filers and found 50 percent were current with one or more of their lenders when they threw in the towel and sought protection from their creditors.

"Approximately half the lenders never saw it coming," PayNet President Bill Phelan said. "They were blindsided."

PayNet will officially release the study on Monday at the annual convention of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association in San Diego.

The 750 companies PayNet studied collectively owed $58 million in loans, leases and lines of credit -- a tiny fraction of the 100,000 small businesses that PayNet said have filed for bankruptcy over the past year with an estimated $10 billion in obligations outstanding.

But the speed and silence with which so many of them went under marks a phenomenon that is deeply worrying to lenders, who historically have managed default risk by closely monitoring delinquencies.

In this downturn, however, some borrowers are refusing to telegraph their distress before they throw in the towel. "They pay and pay and pay," Phelan said, "and then they file for bankruptcy."

At 16 our gas = her paycheck. The "loss" is virtual. The learning experience however will eventually pay off large. Getting shucked off at the first sign of corporate distress is an important lesson best learned early. The email talked about cutting everyone's hours and that business had been very very bad. I'm pretty sure the franchise terms and space terms were both unfavorable having both been transacted during the boom years.

Terry, thanks for the link to that report. There is definitely a strong seasonal pattern to house prices - and I've pointed out several times that I think the CS seasonal adjustment is inadequate.

That said, I think prices will hold up through October (and probably even November) because that is when all those houses bought during the frenzy will close escrow. So maybe the seasonal pattern will be a little skewed this year. But even with the extension of the tax credit, I do expect prices to start falling again ...

The Wiki says:

The term white trash appears to have originated in the Baltimore and Washington, DC area during the 1820s post-revolutionary war reconstruction boom. During that period, many poor people migrated to the area, and white and black semi-skilled workers were competing for the same jobs, resources and marriage partners The term white trash first came into common use in the 1830s as a pejorative used by upper-class United States southerners of all races against financially disadvantaged caucasians. It was synonymous with the slurs sand hiller, "sandlapper", and clay eater. The last term was because Upper-class Southerners assumed poor white farmers farmed ineptly on poor land, and consequently had nothing to eat but clay.
.
In 1854 Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the chapter "Poor White Trash" in her book A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin. Stowe tells the reader that slavery not only produces "degraded, miserable slaves", but also poor whites who are even more degraded and miserable. The plantation system forced those whites to struggle for subsistence. Beyond economic factors, Stowe traces this class to the shortage of schools and churches in their community, and says that both blacks and whites in the area look down on these "poor white trash".

When you see how those folks got here, you begin to realize that the one that came over as indentured servants primarily came from the Belfast area to get away from the fighting, and coming without land and resources, they became to a degree permanently impoverished. The "Landed Gentry" were typically the landholders in the new world, and they came from the more southern part of Britain.

Brownish means it has aged, and is more tender. When you kill cattle and want really nice meat you hang it for about 10 days. At that point there will be a very light cover of mold on the meat. Cut away the mold and butcher the beef, nice and tender with great flavor.

why is this just a big argument? I think pretty much everybody agrees that but for all the government handouts GDP in the third quarter would have been negative and the second quarter would have been worse. If that was the case the economy was going down at first quarter rates when over a 1 million jobs were lost clearly the stimulus has saved 650,000 jobs. Although not a fan of this administration the critics can't have it both ways- pooh pooh the GDP number because it was all government and then argue that the stimulus had no effect.

China's fourth flotilla in the region since the end of 2008 will have a crew of more than 700 that includes a special forces unit and two helicopters. Pirates are holding a Chinese ship for ransom."

Snark or No Snark?

In southern Ontario, Canada, rural folks of that persuasion are redneck, and urban/suburban are white trash.

Apparently, you have options:

Theory One: Cracker comes from a Celtic word meaning braggart or loudmouth. Shakespeare used this sense of the word in King John. But the theory doesn’t explain why the word in this sense would be applied to the usually taciturn folk of the Florida backwoods.
.
Theory Two: The word comes from the practice of "corncracking" or grinding dried corn for use as grits and meal, as in the lyrics of the folk song Blue Tailed Fly, "Jimmy crack corn." When used in this sense, a Cracker is somebody who can’t afford any other food. But this theory doesn’t answer the question of how the word got applied almost exclusively to folks in rural areas of south Georgia and Florida. And, by the 1800s, the name "Cracker" wasn’t used to describe only impoverished settlers.
.
Theory three: The name comes from the sound of whips used to drive cattle and oxen. Florida cattlemen cracked whips to flush their stock out of the palmetto scrub while settlers used whips to spur on oxen that pulled their carts and wagons. Cracker has been used in this sense since the early 1800s. This is the most popular theory today. But it doesn’t explain why people were being called Crackers for centuries before Florida cattlemen began working in the scrub lands.

Dryfly, Actually, I just made it up.

Minnesota it is 'Jack Pine Savage'... ya I know - lacks a certain 'character'... chalk it up to the failings of Scandinavian Charisma.
