the interesting thing is the two years even a star player often gets in the majors if he comes up the normal way (e.g., prince fielder, marco scutaro, joe blanton, dan haren, etc). they tend to make the big league minimum (around 450K) in those two years, despite possibly batting .300, 100 RBIs, 15 wins, etc. many players are brought up for just a few games and then sent back.
there are 240 minor league teams. good luck generalizing - but i'd imagine that one the whole they make a lot less than you think and the talent level is a good deal higher than you might guess. those AAA guys are probably all absolute superstars at the high school level, with everyone who played against them absolutely positive that they would be multi-millionaires by 23. i'm sure the reality and frustration of waiting is tough to swallow.

According to the Journal, some accounting changes are being considered as well:
Government officials are considering a package including a regulatory waiver that could make it easier for CIT to pass assets from its parent company to its bank division and a separate way to borrow from various government programs. It is unclear whether the FDIC will soften its position and allow CIT to issue debt guaranteed by the government.
WHO reported that almost one-half of the patients hospitalized in the United States had underlying conditions.[185]
So, less than a simple majority is definitely not "most" as you posit above. Also, the sheer number of infections from a novel influenza strain during the flu season has the potential to overwhelm the medical services delivery capability of an area...that alone would signficantly degrade outcomes in that area.
Plus the possibility of the flu mutating into something that turns people in to brain sucking zombies - or worse, serial HELOC'rs...
a regulatory waiver that could make it easier for CIT to pass assets from its parent company to its bank division
So, CIT would move assets from its commercial finance division, which the FDIC does not regulate/guarantee, to its bank division, for which FDIC is responsible.
Viruses do not mutate to kill their host, especially if they are readily spread by sick ones.
Viruses exist to propogate themselves in the most efficient manner. For viruses that are spread easily, that translates into a reduction in virulence as they become established.
Ever wonder how much of your DNA consists of assimilated viruses? Or how many viruses coexist with humans..
Have you ever wondered why vaccines are created by repeated passages of a virus in a system.. hint- repeated passage of a virus in any system makes it less virulent.
Hi all, miss you guys and gals but I've been busy lately with it being summertime. My garden is doing great, we had grilled turkey clubs with homegrown tomatoes with fresh basil/mayo for dinner. Enjoying the fruits of my labor that has kept me away from my Cr family. I also had a very sick Greyhound that required surgery (yay, more debt!). I still haven't heard back on the loan mod, I'm in my trial period pending review and final numbers right now. I came across this in my reading today and you all know how I love anecdotal information so here ya go. Daily Kos: Mind Blow: Farmers Giving Away Their Cows at Livestock Auctions
MP, you did say this was going to happen. I'm still stocking up on beef as much as I can while the prices are low. Also, some of the comments after the article are pretty sobering as well. Horses turned loose in the desert because owners can't feed them.
I'll do that HG, I love all things food! Power the Greyhound is doing fantastic, he had an infected tooth removed (they're notorious for having bad teeth coming off the track) and a small tumor from his leg. He's gained almost all his weight back and all his surgical wounds are healed. Great dogs, they are.
energyecon,
I talked with one of the local epi folks, they theorized (informally, of course, because anything else would be news) the connection with latent infections and immunocompromise. Then they pointed out that an estimated 2 billion worldwide have some degree of tb latency- hence much higher rates of problems.
They dismissed this version is using the 1918 cytostorm for now. They are scared beyond belief at the recom potential into something much more lethal. Persons who already had this version may or may not be immune to any follow on version. They also said that it was far more prevalent than reported, but much milder than they expected based on Mexico. In other words it went like a flash through the population and spread worldwide faster than any means of containment.
This may end up a big nothingburger, but the folks paid to understand it are not happy. The final quote was, in this world we are all so interconnected that something like this moves at the speed of an airliner. It was loose here in the USA for several weeks before it went mainstream in Mexico as a problem.
We shall see, but I think it is a sign of far more danger than people realize over the longer term horizon.

I am beginning to think that is not only wrong but dangerously wrong - consider, what is the hospitalization rate due to underlying conditions due to seasonal influenza? I suspect it is the vast majority, but tracking down some data is tough...

energyecon,
I think what I am trying to say is the underlying blasts the fatality rate skyward, as Argentina is demonstrating. The discussion was to watch Southern Africa, when it burns through there we will have an answer if it is underlying driven.
Who would have thought the rich might need to provide adequate nutrition and decent medical care as preventative maintenance against pandemic?
Consider the hairs split- I think we have until the late fall to have an answer here.
I remember living in new york during the great williamsburg explosion. The availability of credit financing made the city unlivable, even to a professional making a very respectable wage. It became a wasteland to me.
"Viruses do not mutate to kill their host"
Viruses do whatever the hell chance wants them to do, and whatever selection pressures allow them to do.
"Viruses exist to propogate (sic) themselves in the most efficient manner. "
The most efficiently propagating viruses propagate themselves in the most efficient manner, you mean.
Just want to make sure, Luci, you're not saddling these viruses up with more sentience/purpose than they deserve.
HG, fantastic recipes, I bookmarked your site, great looking 'maters you got there as well. My favorites to snack on are my grapes as well, they're just perfect for that. Minor leaguers are mosty on $1000 a month + road PDs, there's the odd AAAA guy whom management likes enogh to keep around To work with the kids ala Crash Davis, he maybe makes $50k. Nowadays most players come straight up from AA and try to learn the job in the show. AAA is Mostly for bench players to learn their craft so they're ready when they get their cup if coffee.
The #1 reason folks don't make it past AA ball is they can't hit a curve; the vertical movement screws them up, likely due to astigmatism. After that, the separation comes from hard work and the ability to take instruction.
weren't you making over a hundred an hour doing effectively the same thing just a few months ago?
Believe me, this observation has been made by me and others many, many times. The difference is that my paychecks aren't being written on the backs of my children... if that is any difference at all, at this point in our nation's history.
The underlying blasts the fatality up, plus the standard of medical care can significantly reduce...it medical services are overwhelmed, then pretty much all the serious hospitalizations beyond capacity become fatalities due to need for mechanical ventilation...

"In an August 13 note, CIBC Analyst Meredith Whitney upgraded CIT to “Sector Outperform” from “Sector Perform,” on the belief that the 40% plummet in the company’s shares since mid-July could lead the board to act in the best interests of shareholders by entertaining offers for a sale of the company. Whitney said with an exit of the home lending business and a potential exit of CIT’s student lending business on the horizon, “portfolio growth will be challenging to say the least.” Coupled with a change-in-control provision that affords management $90 million in the event of a sale, challenging growth prospects may be sufficient motivation to entertain offers."
This was August 13........2007. Stock was in the $34 range.
""Although we made progress executing on our business strategy, it was a challenging quarter where we had to make some tough decisions," CIT's Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Peek said on Wednesday. While we believe exiting home lending is the right decision, it significantly impacted our current results."

A bankruptcy filing by CIT Group Inc. probably wouldn't solve the lender's long-term problems, so a short period of government support followed by an acquisition by a large bank or another deep-pocketed investor may be its best hope, analysts said Monday.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama had just started a spirited defense of his economic stimulus plan on Monday when one of his teleprompter screens came loose, crashed to the floor and shattered into pieces.
The gadget's fall surprised Obama, who uses a teleprompter during most speeches and even brief remarks. The glass plate displaying his speech hit the floor in the auditorium of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, a massive building within the White House compound.
''Oh, goodness,'' Obama said. ''Sorry about that, guys.''

So, CIT would move assets from its commercial finance division, which the FDIC does not regulate/guarantee, to its bank division, for which FDIC is responsible.
Sounds like a trial balloon that's full of hot air.
"Sounds like a trial balloon that's full of hot air. "
Or a way to efficiently wind up the company, the FDIC is still the only regulator with an efficient liquidation procedure. BK would be a nightmare, FDIC receivership would allow the customers to be transferred to a new lender immediately.

Executives at Goldman Sachs sold almost $700m worth of stock following the collapse of Lehman Brothers last September, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Most of the sales occurred during the period in which the investment bank enjoyed the support of $10bn from the troubled asset relief programme.
The surge in selling among Goldman partners, at a time when the US government had thrown a lifeline to Wall Street, is likely to draw criticism from lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Having survived the crisis, the bank is expected to report strong second-quarter earnings on Tuesday on rebounding trading profits.
For the eight-month period for which figures are available, Goldman partners sold more than $691m in company stock, even as the firm expanded its public float from 395m to 503m shares in several capital raises.
For the comparable period between September 2007 and April 2008, when the average share price was substantially higher, Goldman partners sold about $438m in stock.
CIT, which says it was the first to offer credit to help consumers nationwide buy Studebaker cars...
There's sweet irony you have to be over 50 to know.
Studebaker, headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, once was one of the Big Five American automakers (along with American Motors). The company went out of business in 1966. In the process it stiffed most of its workers out of their pensions.
More than any other event, this led to the enactment of ERISA, the federal law designed to provide protections for U.S. pension and retirement plan participants, by holding fiduciaries accountable for acting prudently, without conflicts of interest.
stuff at the jumbo line +15% still sells fast in desirable 'hoods in coastal CA. it is places like west la that expect 600K+ which are in deep doo-doo in the coming years.
I thought the jumbo line was going to move from $417 back up to $700 for SoCal this year. I could be mistaken.
If the jumbo line is going to move, it hasn't yet according to all the bank sites I've visited.
well, that line isn't just a reality in terms of conforming for the FRE/FNM sh*t machine, it is also a reality in terms of what even higher incomes could (and should) get as borrowers.
many households that had superjumbo-qualifying 200K+ incomes have fallen out of that category in the past year.
I think about a quarter of the NHL is 'on the bubble'... and should be. WTF are they doing with hockey teams in Arizona, Florida and the Carolina's? There are only so many snowbirds and they mostly root for their 'old teams'.
I think North America could probably support maybe 16 NHL teams... maybe.
Phoenix(and the markets you mentioned) could support hockey if payroll was $30mm; where the coyotes messed up was that they decided to build on the opposite side of the valley from 90% of their season ticket base. Was all predicated on old ownership selling a pig in a poke to the next guy who didn't believe in due diligence. Bad ownership structures is the NHL's biggest problem, but disparity doesn't help.
With the size of the talent pool the league could have 32 teams easy.
Not just in NYC! I was on an errand in East Nashville, within blocks of the football stadium erected at taxpayer expense for the NFL team. A lovely new mixed-use residential/retail development standing virtually empty, storefront after store front empty down East Main. The latter I wasn't surprised to see, but the former was chilling.
From that location, a dweller in the new building could walk to work in downtown Nashville, and live surrounded by amenities, restaurants, churches of all denominations, schools, and big-time sports on the front door.
At the time, I'm sure the development seemed like a no-brainer. Even risk-adverse myself would have bought into that one!

Horses turned loose in the desert because owners can't feed them.

energyecon,
I talked with one of the local epi folks, they theorized (informally, of course, because anything else would be news) the connection with latent infections and immunocompromise.

I suspect it is the vast majority, but tracking down some data is tough...
viz this data from a study in Colorado, the age distribution of hospitalizations...just a proxy for underlying but finding that for A/H1N1 would be instructive

Nobody Home At CIT Group

Goldman executives sold $700m of stock
By Greg Farrell in New York
Published: July 13 2009 23:33 | Last updated: July 13 2009 23:33
There's sweet irony you have to be over 50 to know.
Studebaker, headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, once was one of the Big Five American automakers (along with American Motors). The company went out of business in 1966. In the process it stiffed most of its workers out of their pensions.
More than any other event, this led to the enactment of ERISA, the federal law designed to provide protections for U.S. pension and retirement plan participants, by holding fiduciaries accountable for acting prudently, without conflicts of interest.

well, that line isn't just a reality in terms of conforming for the FRE/FNM sh*t machine, it is also a reality in terms of what even higher incomes could (and should) get as borrowers.
many households that had superjumbo-qualifying 200K+ incomes have fallen out of that category in the past year.
Wowee...
