JPMorgan, Citi Expanding Jumbo Lending

in

I'm just wondering if Obama is currently preparing a guideline for loans to any (all) of the states. Obviously they can't all ask for 20-50 billions; Otherwise that would just turn China's crying wolf about dollar into a real bad wolf. If all the states asked for a bailout/loan, that would probably amount to a trillion, would it not?

Get those big interest income(<---hahahahah) loans while you have the taxpayer back stop.

Most states are below a Billion, I know Hawaii is around 640 Million for the next two years, until all the companies say screw this and leave.
Cali is the the pig that is up for slaughter, and even though I am burnt out on polisci stuff, it is incredible to watch. Kind of like a horror film.

Treasuries: A Very Bearish Development -- Seeking Alpha
From Marketwatch:
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Dresdner Kleinwort Securities has withdrawn from the Federal Reserve's primary U.S. government security dealers, the U.S. central bank said Friday.

In short, it looks like banks are getting bloated with Treasuries and can't buy any more, or at least don't want to.
I still think that is were all the TARP, et al. funds are still going, simple Government accounting with money moving from one pocket to the other to show a profit.

Overall news flow remains slow, but Dow Jones reports that the Fed's Fisher stated that U.S. economic growth is likely to restart in the second half of this year. He also indicated that while the economy is not out of the woods yet, signs are encouraging.

Take your pick of the headline today. It will be one of the above.

1) Stocks close off lows of the day.
2) Stocks settle back after Thursday's surge.
3) Investors lock-in profits after Thursday's surge.
4) Investors see glimmers of hope.

This should be no surprise. The federal government is backstopping almost every kind of loan. Risk, which was ignored during the bubble years, is again taken out of the equation, this time by our government. Despite the fact that the stock market has held up well over the past few months, this crisis is far from over and we have not seen the worst yet. The hard work has not been done, instead, the feds have invested in the production of a grand smoke and mirrors show.

So JP is doubling down?

Ben Bernanke on Ron Paul’s Proposed Leglslation to Audit the Federal Reserve

“My concern about that legislation is that if the GAO is auditing not only the operational aspects of our programs and the details of the programs, but is making judgments about our policy decisions, that would effectively be a takeover of monetary policy by the Congress, a repudiation of the independence of the Federal Reserve, which would be highly destructive to the stability of the financial system, the Dollar and our national economic situation.”

I disagree with our ego centric belief that we are the cause, and more importantly even if we are as a human race causing the change, that we can stop it.

"The inconvenient truth is that the earth's temperatures have flat-lined since 2001, despite growing concentrations of C02. "

As CO2 levels rise above 400ppm in the atmosphere you're going to get warming and its attendant effects. We might be able to live with the warming. It's the attendant effects that are going to annoy us.

What happens over a decade doesn't disprove the physics.

.......re "global warming".......lets try something simple & sensible first - less than two sentences (not 1200+ pages): Lets move all the weather stations that record these supposed "higher temps" out of the hotter urban areas (normally setup around buildings, sidewalks, streets, and the obvious required electricity to power these same stations) and lets all watch the temps fall together.

No, as a scientist you'd want more than a hypothetical correlation based on a single variable. How much do we know about the atmospheric physics and chemistry of the Titanian atmosphere, for example, and how is that influenced by its orbital relationship to Jupiter and the sun?

Gold is in the long run as volatile as equities

If you invested in a company in 1780, odds are pretty good your stock would be worth nothing today - but if it were worth something (Lloyd's, Beretta, ???), odds are you'd be fabulously wealthy. If on the other hand you bought ten ounces of gold, it would be worth - well, about the same, depending on how you want to measure such things. So I'd say you're dead wrong about the volatility.

Pavel,
I'm not talking about "cherry picking" data from a couple of bodies and ignoring the the data that doesn't fit. Essentially all the bodies in the inner range of our solar system experienced stable or increasing temps over recent years (prior to the end of the cycle). Using data from the Earth and assuming the results are from man-made sources while ignoring data from the rest of the planets IS "cherry picking".

Climate change has been happening before the global whining started. Ice Age anyone? Problem for me is the politics and money. more of another scam Like Global cooling, Y2k, Ozone depletion, etc. Kind of hard to see this as real. To much cry Wolf for me. Should we clean up our act? We're in a valley west of Vegas by about 60-70-miles. It's a long & wide prehistoric lakebed (approx 25 mi X 10 mi wide). It's been farmed for alfalfa & cotton since the 40s. Pahrump Valley didn't even get electric lines and phones until the mid to late 60s. The soil consists of puff dirt, age old decomposed grasses, minerals, some sand and salt. Water is 140' down, and you can stick any old seed into the ground, not add fertilizer and it'll sprout. The sun kills most things - many gardens are under shade (like my tomatoes, herbs, and lettuces). Every year I use the manure from the cows, the chicken shit and straw from the coops and corrals, after the winter and I'm good to go.

Ah yes; run out of facts- turn to personal attacks.

Where's the bank failures already? Or are they afraid to do one so close to July 4th?

The reverse of trickle down economics must be trickle up economics. Could some one explain how that works?

Are you familiar with the term "Golden Shower"?

Oooh! I know! Pick me! Pick me!

I've been preaching trickle up as a possibility someday, somehow.

Here's how it works: you know all that $$ the govt./taxpayers are giving to the big banks, etc. etc. etc.?

Well, instead you put all that $$$ to work helping the regular joe - by paying off all mortgages in the US ($12T?)

Then you sit back and watch while the economy starts whirring again.

Those are the basics. Someone else will have to work out the details.

BSR,

Interesting! Thanks for the info and the link.

Yep! Kind of like physics S-it flows down hill.

The hub used to work for Noaa. Global warming is real.

There are a couple of scientists who he regards as legit who disagree, but the
vast number agree and are scared to death.

Yeah, global warming and cooling can happen without us, but now we are
big enough in emissions etc, to cause it, affecting the environment over and above
all the other imputs that nature puts in.

You know, every day I drive to work and look out on the Ewa Plain where housing has burst forth with the 2nd city.

I had a friend who wanted to put in a walkway and two inches below the top soil / sand was coral reef. That whole area was not too long ago completely underwater.

What was before, will come again.
There where times when the entire planet was under ice, and there was times when there was no ice on the planet.

Who are we to decide it must stop changing because it is inconvenient to us.
And oh will it be inconvenient, but my ego is not big enough to say we can overpower the planet.

Maybe I just have low self esteem.

Well, at least gas rises.

Outsider,

The problem is the government gets its money from trickle down economics. Printing money does not make wealth.

It's called tax's.

liz: I respect your position. Please, can't we instead refer to the matter as 'climate change'? I would wager a thin, new, 10 cent token your lesser half would agree.

Source inside EPA confirms claims of science being ignored, suppressed, by top EPA management

by Richard Morrison, Competitive Enterprise Institute

Washington, D.C., June 26, 2009—The Competitive Enterprise Institute is today making public an internal study on climate science which was suppressed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Internal EPA email messages, released by CEI earlier in the week, indicate that the report was kept under wraps and its author silenced because of pressure to support the Administration’s agenda of regulating carbon dioxide."

The subsurface stations site looks interesting, but I don't see any indications disproving the basic physics and chemistry or their conclusions. As for the above - who is the "author" referred to here? What do we know about CEI and Mr. Morrison? Where are the internal EPA messages? Where is the report?

Well, there are seashells way up in the mountains that were laid down millions of
years ago, tho no doubt your coral is recent.

Nothing beneficient happened in Cali today??

Taxes are theft for government to claim public good.

Not running out of facts, just heard this know nothing too many times. Do you about the glaciers? Did you know that incomes were not rising much the last 10 years? Ignore and then criticize is dishonest--but could be lucrative. The economy and the planet are burning up, and you criticize the firemen. My religion taught me to plant a fruit tree when I grow old--foolish thought by you?

This accords with what I understand of the matter, as a layman.

Did you know that incomes were not rising much the last 10 years?

Of course not. But the "basket" of benefits received by the individual has increased, whether it be in the form of government services, public education, or health care benefits. Personal income growth has suffered while the other three (and of course the top 1%) have skyrocketed.

Well I am going to remain ignorant and watch the sun. I do not doubt mankind is guilty of many sins including destroying the environment, but I believe the sun is still the number one player in determining the earth's climate. Doesn't mean we shouldn't take care of our world better. There is a lot we can do, but even if we go stone age and reduce the population to a 1/3....I am still betting the sun will have more to say whether we freeze or boil. An absent minded philosopher's two cents.

Did you know that incomes were not rising much the last 10 years?

Not rising at all.
That's related to the graph showing a dramatic decrease in job creation since 2001.

Source inside EPA confirms claims of science being ignored, suppressed, by top EPA management
By Thomas Fuller
San Francisco Examiner
June 25, 2009

Source inside the Environmental Protection Agency confirmed many of the claims made by analyst Alan Carlin, the economist/physicist who yesterday went public with accusations that science was being ignored in evaluating the danger of CO2.

The source, who chooses not to be identified for fear of retaliation, said that Carlin was rebuffed in his attempt to introduce scientific evidence that does not accord with the EPA's view of global warming, which largely relies on IPCC reports. The source also saw Carlin's report and said that it was 'based on 8 points of peer-reviewed, recent and relevant scientific publications' that cast doubt on the wisdom of regulating CO2 as a pollutant.

The EPA's draft Endangerment Finding was initially written over a year ago during the Bush administration, and Lisa Jackson (the new head of the EPA) and her team wanted to get the Finding out on or near Earth Day, according to a schedule that was made public about a week before formal publication of the proposal. The draft was submitted to agency workgroups with only one week for review and comment, which is unprecedented, and received only light comments--except for Carlin's.

Alan Carlin, who had hosted a series of seminars featuring peer-reviewed scientists who disagree with the IPCC reports (but were unattended by members of the workgroup developing the Endangerment Finding) went public...via the Competitive Enterprise Institute after realising that there would be no debate about the science. The lectures by the scientists are available on the EPA website, but were not even mentioned in the Finding. Carlin was advised to get an attorney--and has since been reassigned to mundane work.
...
EPA may not have the expertise to evaluate many of the comments, as they are more charged with dealing with the effects of global warming through regulation rather than determining the true nature of the cause. Our source says members of the workgroup complained to other EPA staff that they don't understand these issues, much less how to relate the scientific studies identified in Carlin's report to the IPCC report.

Then we should be pigged any minute-

$85M cost to DIF for total assets of $199M. And a direct payout. Yikes!

My point is there is still a lot more science to be done, and we really do not have a clue yet as to the over all picture.
The critical point is that climate change, and the impacts can and will be devastating. I will shout it out again, carbon taxes to be spent on pork programs is the wrong way to go. There is no way we are going to stop China, and India from expanding and building more coal plants, or stop the slash and burning in Brazil destroying the rain forest to create farm land.
Or more importantly, if someone knows how to slow down or stop the increase activity in the ring of fire, (Pacific rim volcanoes just kind of going off), you know causing killer Tsunami's, etc.
We need to be focusing on being able to respond to and adapt to what is coming, and stop deluding ourselves that we can control the world, we can't even control our own economy people.

If I recall correcting there was a guy who got suppressed for the opposite reason by the Bush
administration.

Pavel, I'm inclined to like the following as an introduction to some alternative thinking on climate change, even if the magazine is a lightweight.

I particularly appreciate the researcher's frankness - he doesn't undertake to discredit the greenhouse effect and in fact points to the research showing it is operative. The more believable, then, when his own work shows the situation to be more complex than greenhouse effect only:

By classifying C02 as a hazard, and controlling the release of C02, not only do you make a human being a hazard, you set in place the mind set that stopping the production of C02 is a service to society. Let's just kill the ones we don't like and its good for the planet.

OK. on what points does Carlin disagree with the IPCC? What are Carlin's credentials? Is he knowledgeable in relevant fields of climate science? Has he published peer-reviewed articles which include his disagreements with the IPCC? If so, what responses have there been?

I took your text, did a search, and returned you a link. You're the one who asked for it. Did you follow the link to the scanned .PDF?

Pavel, you asked about the mechanism operative in the global cooling model. The Discover interview does a reasonable job of presenting that viewpoint.

Svensmark's work has continued since publication of the article, and has been taken up by CERN, who have the facilities and funding to work out (or disprove) the model on a molecular level. They believe they have the mechanism - they want to understand it fully.

Actually, my initial skepticism was brought about from the observation that global warming had attracted proponents or adherents. Hard science doesn't require them.
