I wouldn't mind the FED's purchaes of company's stock in the financial and other businesses, if only they didn't have the authority to:

Since the FED is a private enterprise operating in a quasi-govt role (similar to Freddy and Fanny) their public and private operations should be separated...

Your argument might be halfway true if there were only 1 HMO at 1 price to choose from.
I think the govt ought to offer catastrophic coverage tax credits, to choose from private plans. That's it.
I've heard about postal service type comparisons. If the acctg is clean perhaps a govt option is workable, but a pay option, where even if you're poor you can get an advance on SS or some sort of cost...
One of Jackson's shrewdest deals at the height of his fame in 1985 was the $47.5 million acquisition of ATV Music
He bought the sprawling Neverland ranch in 1988 for $14.6 million,
When he ran into further financial problems, he agreed to a deal with Sony in 1995 to merge ATV with Sony's library of songs and sold Sony music publishing rights for $95 million. Then in 2001, he used his half of the ATV assets as collateral to secure $200 million in loans from Bank of America.
As his financial problems continued, Jackson began to borrow large sums of money, according to a 2002 lawsuit by Union Finance & Investment Corp. that sought $12 million in unpaid fees and expenses.

The Bowie Bond issuance was perhaps the first instance of intellectual property rights securitization. I had an emergency operation for a detached retina 2 years ago. Outpatient 2 hour operation. Approx. 45k reduced to 30k since I'm with a PPO. My co-pay 3 thousand.
There was a thread earlier where someone claimed that technology is driving up costs of healthcare. I think you need to break that down between technology advances to required procedures versus elective procedures.
20 years ago my retinal operation required 4 weeks of recovery time. This time recovery time was 2 days.
I had a kidney stone removed a few years ago. Outpatient 30 minute procedure. 10 years ago I would have been in the hospital for a week and required full surgery.
Much of the costs of technology and medication is due to the rise in elective procedures. How many drugs are produced for conditions that could be resolved through changes in life-style. Better eating, walking versus driving, exercising, relaxation.
But that requires work and a pill is a lot easier.

Has issuance increased that much? And that would seem to indicate further compression of profit margins as financing gets more expensive, no? Any linky?
Not really a debt decline metric per se, more a short term activity indicator - inventory financing was once a significant part of the CP outstanding - though recent history may have been more geared towards ABCP issuance for the purposes of asset price inflation... /snark
OK, so, you really think that one of these firms gets this letter, and somehow comes to a realization that it might have been doing something wrong?
I mean, do you think there has been even one instance of this letter changing someone's behavior? Either you arent doing this, or if you are, youve gotten to be one of the most stupid and/or corrupt in lenders still in business.

CR - The OCC has issued 15 C&Ds in 2009 and the OTS has issued 32 - of course, some of these may be for things like crappy BSA compliance and not crappy loans, but my guess is that most are crappy loans.
Shows the level of issuance of all types at just under $100 billion from the beginning of the year - that leaves another $400 billion of corporate issuance to replace the ~$500 billion of CP that has gone away since the beginning of the year. Again, which is not a hallmark of deleveraging but rather less economic activity IMNSHO.
Also, the level of issuance YTD is down about ~20% YoY...

I'm a believer in certain industries being run and regulated like public utilities.
Water, electricity, banking and health-care. There are good and bad in any solution. Personally for the above industries I simply believe the good outweighs the bad as a public utility.
I've seen and dealt with the good and bad of hmo, ppo, as well as socialized medicine (Canada). For me personally I'll take the socialized approach.

I presume you mean $23,000.00 not $23.00 (are you from Europe or something?). If $23,000.00 wasn't enough to make you medical expenses deductible, then you get no sympathy from me. You're making way too much money.

Yes $23K. I have no figure for the last decade for the Heart attack and 6 years of cancer treatment. This looks all different when you have to fund all of you own expenses being independent business person. Funny thing is the free should be very appealing to me but it is wrong and won't work.
I think we should make access to health-care, electricity, water and every other attribute that separates the 1st world from the 3rd world for profit. It's worked like gangbusters for the masses everywhere! I've been simply amazed at how much it's contributed health and prosperity of the low-middle class in Asia, Latin America and Africa.

Sorry for your troubles. I have a rather knee-jerk liberal friend who's suggested catastrophic health coverage for all from U'Sam, and people buy their own insurance for regular medical expenses. I could go for that, and when you think about it, that approach would make sense since it would actually help small businesses and effectively be "pro-business". Consequently, it'll never happen.
Govt run programs are driven by disaster-du-jour and political will and bureaucracy. Voting with your feet to another HMO won't be an option to 80% of the population.

I am happy to have the funds to pay and happy for the opportunity to be in the study. I am here! My point is those who generally complain have not even support themselves responsibly. Employers should not provide Health care because most employees think it is free. That is why if the employee was at least taxed (including union members) then it would be a bit more in their face as the cost and responsibility of it. They would shop and adjust their needs including a back for deductions and related expenses, creating more competition in rates and expenses. Medical will and should never be cheap, the best always cost more. Time Americans go back to working for what they have and what is really important.

Cease and Desist Order issued to the Bank Whore-
What does it mean and what is it good for?
Let’s look at a Cease and Desist Order issued by a government regulator .
Here is an example of a Federal Regulator, The Office of Thrift Supervision.
Here is a regulator that does not regulate, does not supervise and will not enforce the laws, rules and regulations that it is responsible for in their daily operations.
November 2008 the Office of Thrift Supervision issues a Cease and Desist Order against the AmTrust Bank Cleveland Ohio, a family owned and run piggybank that has developed a pattern of not following the rules over the years. The citation is for Unsafe and Unsound Banking practices.
Here is one example of AmTrust Bank f/k/a Ohio Savings bank and their operations. In 1985 the bank is sued by an individual who is a bank borrower for manipulation of the calculation of mortgage interest.
The suit later turns into a Class action lawsuit. In September 2007 AmTrust Bank settles this lawsuit for a cash payment of 14 million dollars This lawsuit affected some 27,000 bank borrowers.( To verify this story google AmTrust Bank and Lawsuits)
The bank still is operating today. The OTS and the FDIC have not closed them.
April 24 2009 the Wall Street Journal in their article “Regulators Fell One Bank, Spare a Rival “write that Ohio Senator Voinovich and Ohio Representative LaTourette so much as tell the regulators hands off AMTrust Bank. This is code for the AmTrust Bank is politically protected by two Ohio Morons.
Therefore the rules, laws and regulations are for the honest people. The Wealthy and the Powerful Bankers and Politicians of the same DNA represent their own self interest and only their own self interest.
How then is it that we elect people who are better paid, better insured and retire with no financial worries that not only permit these unethical and illegal activities, but also share in the rewards of their office from the drippings of the wealthy and powerful bankers?

Did anyone ever watch the documentary/movie on Glenn Gould? I can't remember the number of prescription drugs he was on...but it was suggested that the net effect was nil. They all canceled each other out.

This belongs on the credit card thread.

One forensic accountant testified that the singer had an "ongoing cash crisis" and was spending $20 million to $30 million more per year than he earned
Bowie Bonds!
Bowie Bonds - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bowie Bond issuance was perhaps the first instance of intellectual property rights securitization. The securitization of the collections of other artists, such James Brown, Ashford & Simpson and the Isley Brothers, later followed. These Bonds are named Pullman Bonds after David Pullman, the banker who pushed the original Bowie deal.

A new study says there’s some truth to that. Seriously. The dopamine rush from sex improves creativity making you a better problem solver. A boost of oxytocin and vasopressin generate feelings of trust, making you more likely to be a team player. And, a boost in testosterone can make you more confident and competitive.

"rich,
People on medicare generally have no clue what it is like in the private world. A elder friend (rail road retiree) complained about a year of cancer treatment on medicare costing him $4,500. Should have seen his jaw drop when my wife told him my year of care including free study treatment cost me $23.000. Mine is after taxed dollar also. Anyone on Medicare has close to gold card coverage. Why should they complain?
"
Ahh much more plausible explanation.... thanks....

/snark

RD,
Your thesis is not borne out by the SIFMA data on total issuance:
http://www.sifma.org/uploadedFiles/Research/Statistics/SIFMA_USKeyStats.pdf

I admit my comment is the sum of many observations. While i root around in my links for vindication I thought you'd get a kick out of this: Debt Offerings for Jul 2000. Talk about going to money heaven.

Cinco-X,
I am happy to have the funds to pay and happy for the opportunity to be in the study.
