SEC: "Get the Bangladesh foreign embassy on the phone we need Angelo to come back."

wasn't bribing the congresscritters either, I bet

Can they do the same with Toll brothers or we need to wait for Ken Lewis to spend some more of the taxpayer money before that happens?

Tan man headed to the can.

Could not happen to a nicer guy! Wonder how well the tan will hold up in the slammer...maybe they'll send him to a country club in Floriduh.

Ooooohhhh! The thought of Tangelo in an orange jumpsuit brings a BIG smile to my face!

Now if they would only go after the corrupt bastards at the Fed......

MS, from prev thread - [how long can he print money? That's how long]

The "threat" of buying treasuries works at first. Then the market sees the weakness and exploits, as the dollar gets crushed. If it were to even out a brief blip in supply - maybe. It can't work with govt borrowing $1.5t/yr for years to come.

Wonder if prison rapists get turned on by tan lines?

I thought it would take forever.. BTW guess where tan man's younger brother used to work.

How 'bout that. Only took them 2 years to get the most obvious fraudster of them all. Wonder how long it will take to catch all those who took the most rudimentary steps to cover their tracks?

Only took 4 years a little Fuc*ing late wouldn't you say...? I am sure he will get the Ken Lay treatment.

Modzilla screwed people on the way up, and screwed people on the way down...but he is a small town player....we have bigger fish to fry....none the less I think Ill light a cigar in celebratory fashion.

I say 4 years because I have been following the Countrywide scam since 05...

Wake me up when Braney Frank and Chris Dodd are indicted.

As I said.. I thought it would take forever.

//Only took 4 years a little F****** late wouldn't you say...? I am sure he will get the Ken Lay treatment.//

Ya Chris Dodd should be right there in the dock with him...

it's a civil suit... no jumpsuit

This is interesting:

"The SEC will also charge the company's former chief operating officer, David Sambol, and former financial chief, Eric Sieracki, with securities fraud for failing to disclose the firm's relaxed lending standards in its 2006 annual report."

best to all

Agreed. The price of gas is 2.60. He will give up real fast when the screaming starts after it goes past 3.

I don't know how they could have found enough evidence to implicate the Tan Man...

Damn, you're right! Fines are NOT sufficient punishment in his case.

Surely the SEC can do better than that.

It seems that Mozillo is even more thoroughly hated than Madoff.

<

p>Insider trading cases are usually hard to prove, and, IMHO, don't really go to the heart of the misdeeds in this case. It's like prosecuting Al Capone for tax evasion. What is really needed is a case on predatory lending.

no jail time since they are not filing a criminal complaint.

So if all goes according to plan he will pay a $1 fine that will be it and the Obama administration will be able to claim another victory which the compliant media will gleefully lap up. It does wonders when you can buy a government.

And Take a name... what if he doesn't have any tan lines?

Be thankful you don't live next door?

A very good article about unemployment below. It also has information about the census hiring and firing in it for those of you interested.

Part-timers form a hidden unemployment rate

Because of the surge of Census hiring, April unemployment only rose to 8.9 percent -- a much slower increase than had been feared. But the latest unemployment figures aren't likely to get similar help.

Consider the numbers:

--The 8.9 percent April unemployment rate was based on 13.7 million Americans out of work. But that number doesn't include discouraged workers, or people who gave up looking for work after four weeks. Add those 700,000 people, and the unemployment rate would be 9.3 percent.

--The official rate also doesn't include "marginally-attached workers," or people who have looked for work in the past year but stopped searching in the past month because of barriers to employment such as child care, poor health or lack of transportation. Add those 1.4 million people, and the unemployment rate would be 10.1 percent.

--The official rate also doesn't include "involuntary part-time workers," or the 2 million people like Noel who took a part-time job because that's all they could get, plus those whose work hours dropped below the full-time level. Once those 9 million workers are added to the unemployment mix, the rate would be 15.8 percent.

All told, nearly 25 million Americans were either unemployed, underemployed, or had given up looking for a job in April.

[Agreed. The price of gas is 2.60]

Of course, nothing is certain or everyone would go ALL-IN shorting treasuries and the dollah. The economy could seriously tank again and there would be some support to the treasury market because it's so deep and liquid to absorb massive amounts of money. Also we could see some sovereign defaults or political instability which would also stiffen up the USD and treasuries.

Is this the best price this year to short that market. Maybe ?

We, the jury, hereby sentence Mambo Mozillo to invest his net worth into U.S. long bonds until he is dead.

Dominos! CW's execs first, then who?

Do you get free tanning @ fed. accomodation?

Creditcriminals,

From last topic. I am a super dope. Why won't REITS go down? Them not is killing me. I have to believe in fundamentals but they don't look to apply here. thanks in advance for any wisdom.

[Obama administration will be able to claim another victory ]

CORRECTION - "Obama administration will be able to claim another SYMBOLIC victory"

It's all about appearances with the Obama administration.

Jeff - the losses are not a matter of Qly records...they still can point to 5/7 years of great earnings. Nothing as good as buying stuff by believing the images in the rear view mirror.

What's even more amazing is that according to that same website (SEC Form 4) that insiders sold $997M in shares from July 03 until CFC vanished. Match that figure with the total inside purchases of $157K. Jaw-dropping.

I can't recall if CFC had any share repurchase programs going at the same time.

Insider Stock Trades - Countrywide Financial Corp (CFC)

What crimes did he commit? He was implementing the intent of the Federal Govt - to get more people into home ownership... The Congress set the policy and the financial system implemented it and found a way to profit on it... too bad no one was watching the systemic risk, although John McCain tried to raise the issue in committee but got shouted down.... I dont think there was even one borrower who was crying at the time they signed the loan docs and got possession of their new home... I dont think Mozillo sold any extravagant amounts of stock at any time - all executives who get stock and options as part of their compensation normally sell some to diversify their holdings or to support their lifestyle....

I know Mozillo is held up as the man to hate in this mess but all I see is a businessman who worked hard for almost 30 years building up his business, following the rules laid down by Congress... Forcing the lenders to make bad loans to borrowers who didnt have a prayer of paying them back needs to be laid at the door of the Congress, not on the lenders...

What if the FED says it is not going to buy treasuries. The yields would rise. And everything would tank money would flow back into short treasuries again we would have a repeat of Nov 08

The FED has a choice support the dollar or support stocks and the banks. Trying to have a little bit of both is not working.

"What crimes did he commit?

1) He was implementing the intent of the Federal Govt "

That's a good start!

Good one!

yes speed, up, trending up.

USD going down.

"a repeat of Nov 08" - And that is a bad thing, right?

Thanks for the link. Similar activity in BAC at the end of April.

Hey broward please dont be offended by this but you are my best leading indicator - the recovery will start when you finally decide to go back to work...

i.e., the U-6 number, which ought to be the reported one.

Well I stopped going to a job when I was 58, but I didnt really retire - I've been taking care of older family members since then and also doing a lot of house remodeling etc... Also not collecting SS yet - will start in November when I finally hit the magic age of 66....

If the SEC were homeland security would we be at level ORANGE?

The 10 year closed up 16.5 basis points today. The Fed's veneer of control is rapidly peeling away.

"The FED has a choice support the dollar or support stocks and the banks. Trying to have a little bit of both is not working."

Well put. I think this "have your cake and eat it too" mentality is really confusing the markets... we keep swinging from deflation to inflation and back. Perhaps the USG's biggest mistake here is not clearly signaling what it is trying to do.

veneer, petina, shelac...

[He was implementing the intent of the Federal Govt "]

That's why naming Frankin Rains, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, & the entire Financial Services committes co-conspirators would be appropriate.

I am so glad we have found something the liberals and the libertarians can agree on.

Two things, really. Mozilo should go to jail, and propping up the long bond won't work.

Is there anyone on the board who disagrees with either of those?

kilroy,

On the contrary it's stating exactly what it wants to do and who it wants to save, but the wheels have already fallen off the bus.

Yes particularly Rains who committed accounting fraud to boost his bonuses - he took out 100million from Fannie in 6 years...

"The 10 year closed up 16.5 basis points today. The Fed's veneer of control is rapidly peeling away."

Gee BB, maybe the yield will just be allowed to climb higher. Eventually there will be a buyer for Treasuries.

zigging and zagging to the close!

Is there anyone on the board who disagrees with either of those?

If Geithner is a member here, that would be one.

I've been looking at data on the BLS.gov site - best I can figure out there are about 14 million unemployed right now... That's right about 10% of the workforce... It depends on how you want to look at it - should you only count people who want to work or should you count people who should be working but dont want to... etc...

A lot of SP futures buying. Its the PPT. No other explanation.

Tan man headed to the can.

You take the Golden AN and you give it to the Tan Man. Then you throw him in the can. Understand?

He is far from a sacrificial lamb but he is one scapegoat in the present parade of madness meant to channel public anger. More high-visibility perp walks will appease the herd, and meanwhile thousands of smaller sharks, many far less ethical, will slide on into the memory hole with their payola. Ensuring that the private sector be painted as the bad guy and moral failure here is equally important to build public support for the government and help us forget who enabled and failed to correct the behaviors for personal gain. That's important because to accept Obamanomics we have to continue to believe in a beneficent or at least well-meaning but easily-duped governing class that wants only the best for its sheep... err... people.

Same as it ever was.

@Kilroy it's a civil suit... no jumpsuit

Well, we can always hope he fibs in the process of trying to get out of the civil charges and winds up doing a Martha Stewart...

Answer: $450,383,005.00
Question: How much has Angelo Mozilo realized in stock options since 20 Jun '04?

Sadly, the charges are merely civil.

At Lampoc inmates are allowed to hold seminars once a week. Do you think there is any interest in discussing tanning?

I commend their efforts, but I would this Operation Long Shot.

The LA Times has an article about "Funemployment"... No, seriously.

For the 'funemployed,' unemployment is welcome -- latimes.com

Funny how there weren't any of these stories when GWB was in office.

"He is far from a sacrificial lamb but he is one scapegoat in the present parade of madness meant to channel public anger. "

Agree, you can't have this guys exploits plastered all over CR,Housing Panic.Housing Doom, Housing Wire, etc., etc., etc. and then claim he pulled a fast one.

Sadly, even if this does stick, it's not like he'll be sent to a Federal PMITA prison.

I'm about to turn 34.....under employed...broke and IT SUCKS! I WANT TO WORK...I was recently turned away from a pest control position....because I was OVER QUALIFIED. I have owned and operated my own business for 11 years.....I told the Mgr I would shovel sh1t to earn an income right now. How do you think that feel to a MAN who want's to start a family and be a productive citizen? Can't even land a PEST CONTROL JOB....WTF? That's it........There is no HOPE......

So.. no criminal charges (laughable) and what happens if he's convicted.. a 'big' fine (ha!) and the trashing of his reputation (hahahahahhah!)
They can get Martha Stewart and act like that was a big deal but the uber-crooks have no real problems.

  • splat

If a late-night NYTimes article is to be believed, criminal charges for fraud are a possibility.
