The lobby group for the brewers/restaurateurs has done well by blocking any tax increase since the 1970s. It sucks that they are making up for it all at once but it is past due.

With budget negotiations still hung up in the Senate, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to send 20,000 layoff warnings to state workers Tuesday morning.
Schwarzenegger will instruct his Department of Personnel Administration to give agencies lists of people affected -- those with the least seniority among the approximately 100,000 state workers employed at General Fund units.
"In the absence of a budget, the governor has the responsibility to realize savings any way he can," said Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear.
The governor has not specified how many layoffs, if any, he would pursue. Each 2,000 layoffs would save an estimated $150 million, according to the Legislative Analyst's Office.

Regarding the home-brewed beer tax, I encourage state legislators to go down this road. When you start taxing the process of bacterial fermentation in a person's private home, you start fostering the kind of attitude about government that can really bring a lot of productive interactions between homeowners with a correct sense of propriety and fucking state beaurocrats!

The Oregon brewers tax is for all kegged beer(micro and macro) sold wholesale. The cost is around 20 cents per pint. Nearly 40 years without a tax increase is a good run for their lobby but as we all know all good things eventually end.

How could I not notice, given that half of my Hoopajoops LTD shell corporations are based in Nauru? Dollar is up 0.6 against the Yen. In olden times (pre-Lehman) that would have been huge but these days it's pretty ordinary intraday volatility. It is probably an unwind but far from the first big one we've seen.

Mmmm....bacon! I know what you mean though. We've been living large for a couple of state workers (i.e. $10 wines but can ratchet down at a moment's notice. Most of our cash goes to infrastructure enhancement to deal with just this sort of thing. Too many people haven't even contemplated a real change of circumstances.
Emerging Europe is a much bigger problem than Asia-Pacific (roughly same size of international claims, but EE debts were built up over a much shorter period and there is less productive return to show for it)
Latin America is barely on the charts in comparison, ditto for Africa

Regarding the home-brewed beer tax, I encourage state legislators to go down this road. When you start taxing the process of bacterial fermentation in a person's private home, you start fostering the kind of attitude about government that can really bring a lot of productive interactions between homeowners with a correct sense of propriety and fucking state beaurocrats!

The Oregon brewers tax is for all kegged beer(micro and macro) sold wholesale. The cost is around 20 cents per pint. Nearly 40 years without a tax increase is a good run for their lobby but as we all know all good things eventually end.

How could I not notice, given that half of my Hoopajoops LTD shell corporations are based in Nauru? The deadline has been moved out to June, but some channels are going ahead with the switch to save on broadcasting costs.

Apparently, some liquidation is taking place. We saw a couple of events last week that looked like hedge fund mass sales, and last year when that french bank liquidated those rouge short positions. This one looks rather large, and could be a soverign default (according to Denninger.)

It originated at approximately 7:15 CT this evening and originated out of Asia somewhere. All of the primary currency crosses got hit at once - Euro, Pound, Yen - all weakened dramatically against the dollar and it is still going on.
Dollar is up 0.6 against the Yen. In olden times (pre-Lehman) that would have been huge but these days it's pretty ordinary intraday volatility. It is probably an unwind but far from the first big one we've seen.
Maybe Cali could use turbo tax like Timmy did and get a Fed refund!

When I was a kid my dad ran factories in the rural south - in one place (rural west Tennessee circa 1970) I had a thread bare kid come up to me and start sniffing - he then said 'Man you must got it good - I can smell the bacon you ate for breakfast - we never get that.' Swedish Bank, including Riksbank, exposure outside of Sweden is pretty tightly confined to the Baltics (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia)
It's not unfathomable that we see a Scandinavian pact where Norway, Sweden, and Finland join together to support Iceland and the Baltics as a longer term strategy

Check this out.
While it is milder now--down 25-50% off of today's highs so far--every major Asian & European currency was sinking against the USD--or the USD was skyin'. Denn was pointing out that it takes quite a bit of movement to have so much correlation--and high movements at that--at the same time over the course of a few hours.
As for why it is happening, who knows. It may be related to the pending downgrade of banks that have East Europe exposure like the anon's link above. It may be something totally different like more unwinding.
If anyone has anything, please share with the group.

What we are seeing looks to Simon Johnson like a financial coup d'etat.
Now is the time to break up the big money center banks. Now is the time to reinstate Glass-Steagall. We must demand the reforms for which we elected the Obama Administration.
Watch this interview. Think about it. Let other people know. Write your congressmen.
And be prepared to act on a larger scale in a peaceful way to get the point across that we value our liberty and we will stand for justice. We are not optimistic that the government will do the right thing without more prodding and significant support from the public.

G.M. has the most at stake with the U.A.W. Its future obligations for retiree health care are estimated at $47 billion, and by next year it is required by its contract to contribute more than $10 billion to the trust set up in 2007.
The company, which nearly ran out of money before receiving the first $9.4 billion of its $13.4 billion in late December, is pressing the U.A.W. to accept stock for as much as 50 percent of its next contribution to the trust, according to two people knowledgeable about the discussions.
Mr. Gettelfinger, for his part, is trying to protect one of the jewels of the U.A.W. contract, which is essentially health care for life for anyone who worked on the assembly line and their surviving spouses. G.M. has already canceled health care for more than 100,000 of its salaried retirees.
The U.A.W. at this point understands that it can very well turn into the villain of this whole thing by insisting that its workers receive health care benefits that few workers do, said Gary N. Chaison, a labor expert at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
