The really fascinating part is how for the last few thousand posts on CR and at least several hundred MSM references it has never been the exclusive fault of the democrats.  That's so great because the answer is obvious given the premise as presented.

DOW 36000 will solve every problem, right?

It's funny, but I bet every reader of this blog could utter 2 or 3 lines in a video about the impact of this banking hostage/terrorist situation on their personal lives & finances in a way that would resonate with decisionmakers. Wouldn't that be cool, a CR video of bloggers asking Timmay & Congress for nationalization!

Fronline does some pretty good stuff.  I woder how the CRA revisionism will play out in it.

I wrote a post called "DOW 36,000; Its not what you think" which covered the scenario that the DOW hits 36,000 but you would not like it.

Corporate TV is a big part of what is wrong with this country. I can't stand it. How can you intelligent people watch the stuff?

I'd much rather read CR!!!!

I don't think you can use the old 'run away from the problem' strategy anymore.

They're all probably insane drug-addled deviants from DailyKOS, taking propoganda money from the central government so they can buy drugs, I'll wager.

Here come 20,000 more layoffs:

Schwarzenegger to send layoff notices Tuesday

With budget negotiations still hung up in the Senate, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to send 20,000 layoff warnings to state workers Tuesday morning.

Schwarzenegger will instruct his Department of Personnel Administration to give agencies lists of people affected -- those with the least seniority among the approximately 100,000 state workers employed at General Fund units.

"In the absence of a budget, the governor has the responsibility to realize savings any way he can," said Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear.

The governor has not specified how many layoffs, if any, he would pursue. Each 2,000 layoffs would save an estimated $150 million, according to the Legislative Analyst's Office.

Either we change or we sink. Old recycled crap like savings, "earning your pay", protectionism, legalism, religion, environmentalism and all other defunct ideologies cannot save us.

Now for something really important.

Has anyone ever been to Aruba and Curacao? If so which did you like better?

Thanks.

I agree.  I just wasn't aware enough to realize it until recently.  Him and Hillary both bought and paid for since forever.

Ah, forget the Cal taxes. They ought to make do the best they can with what they've got. Eventually (soon) they'll hit bottom, dig for a month or so and get down to the level (education/services) where Alabama (my home state) is now. THEN they'll do something QUICK to solve their problems.

Anyone still paying to be brainwashed has their head where the sun don't shine.

No, when he gets talking politics, he really foams at the mouth; but much of his analysis is interesting, if not spot on.

Somebody wake up CR and ask him what is going on.

Ireland??

It would explain the 4% drop in the Swedish krona.

It originated at approximately 7:15 CT this evening and originated out of Asia somewhere. All of the primary currency crosses got hit at once - Euro, Pound, Yen - all weakened dramatically against the dollar and it is still going on.

Dollar is up 0.6 against the Yen. In olden times (pre-Lehman) that would have been huge but these days it's pretty ordinary intraday volatility. It is probably an unwind but far from the first big one we've seen.

Maybe Cali could use turbo tax like Timmy did and get a Fed refund!

FFDIC, cannot imagine how difficult this must be for all of you. God bless you.

Trump Entertainment To File Chapter 33 Early Tuesday

The board of Trump Entertainment, absent the lovely Ivanka Trump, is currently meeting to prepare a bankruptcy filing early tomorrow morning according to the WSJ. This filing will be the charm for the Donald, who on Friday did the noble and brave thing by resigning from the board days ahead of bankruptcy, as TRMP has filed for bankruptcy twice before, and emerged most recently in 2005.

Out of concern the crew has asked Speaker Pelosi to take refuge in the confines of crab pot to avoid entanglement in the rope. Let's watch as they deploy the crab pot over the side. Speaker Pelosi seems to be saying something - I think she is trying to tell the crew that they did not put any bait in the crab pot she's in. It's amazing the concern Speaker Pelosi shows for her constituents. The crew doesn't hear her over the howling winds and crashing waves and launches her and the pot over the side. Oh wait what's this - the crew has forgotten to tie the rope and buoy to the pot Speaker Pelosi is in. Man is Sig Sighansen gonna be pissed when he learns they lost a pot..."

Check this out.

While it is milder now--down 25-50% off of today's highs so far--every major Asian & European currency was sinking against the USD--or the USD was skyin'.  Denn was pointing out that it takes quite a bit of movement to have so much correlation--and high movements at that--at the same time over the course of a few hours.

As for why it is happening, who knows.  It may be related to the pending downgrade of banks that have East Europe exposure like the anon's link above.  It may be something totally different like more unwinding.

2.) Get off the Republicans or Democrats did this myth. There is no difference without distinction between the two and both sold us down the river.

CONJURE'S FUN FACTS

Just how big is $12 trillion?

Using a standard US dollar bill, which is .004 inches thick by 2.5 inches by 6.125 inches, we'll attempt to arrive at an estimation of the amount of transportation equipment required to buy a loaf of bread in Zimbabwe today.

.004 inches times 2.5 inches times 6.125 inches equals .06125 cubic inches per bill. 1728 cubic inches per cubic foot divided by .06125 equals 28,212 bills per cubic foot, assuming perfect stacking and new bills only. A standard FRA 50 foot box car has a capacity of roughtly 5,277 cubic feet, or 5277 times 28,212 bills, which is equal to 148,876,016 bills per box car.

12,000,000,000,000 divided by 148,876,016 equals 80,603 box cars. Divide this by 100 (we'll use $100 Zimbabwean bills) equals 806 50 foot box cars. Multiplied by 56 feet for couplers and slack equals a line of box cars 45,138 feet long, or 8.55 miles long. Paper weighs roughly 75 pounds per cubic foot. 806 box cars times 5277 cubic feet times 75 pounds per cubic foot, in tons of 2000, is 159,497 tons.

Multiply the above calculations by roughly 2.5 to buy a loaf of bread.

Don't know if this was posted, but this was at Jesse's. Truly frightening and given the person who was saying these things...

Jesse's Café Américain: America vs. the Oligarchs
Bill Moyers has an interview with former IMF Chief Economist and MIT professor Simon Johnson that is excerpted and linked below.

Simon Johnson's premise is that the big Wall Street banks represent an oligarchy that is exerting undue influence and control on our government and the economy. They are turning this crisis to their advantage, and circumventing the democratic process.

What we are seeing looks to Simon Johnson like a financial coup d'etat.

Now is the time to break up the big money center banks. Now is the time to reinstate Glass-Steagall. We must demand the reforms for which we elected the Obama Administration.

Watch this interview. Think about it. Let other people know. Write your congressmen.

And be prepared to act on a larger scale in a peaceful way to get the point across that we value our liberty and we will stand for justice. We are not optimistic that the government will do the right thing without more prodding and significant support from the public.

Snips of interview follow at the link.

G.M. has the most at stake with the U.A.W. Its future obligations for retiree health care are estimated at $47 billion, and by next year it is required by its contract to contribute more than $10 billion to the trust set up in 2007.

The company, which nearly ran out of money before receiving the first $9.4 billion of its $13.4 billion in late December, is pressing the U.A.W. to accept stock for as much as 50 percent of its next contribution to the trust, according to two people knowledgeable about the discussions.

Mr. Gettelfinger, for his part, is trying to protect one of the jewels of the U.A.W. contract, which is essentially health care for life for anyone who worked on the assembly line and their surviving spouses. G.M. has already canceled health care for more than 100,000 of its salaried retirees.

“The U.A.W. at this point understands that it can very well turn into the villain of this whole thing by insisting that its workers receive health care benefits that few workers do,” said Gary N. Chaison, a labor expert at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
