I'm going to Lunch to celebrate!

Let's help one place stay open, for 10 minutes..

Think I'll go out for lunch too: Squirrel chow mein anyone?

This is actually fantastic news because I hate cooking.

All those PhDs working the tables must be having an effect.

My guess is it will be short lived.

After seeing the new home sales graph on top of the other bad economic news this week, I have given up. I fully expect a depression at least as severe as in the 30s.

In other words, I am capitulating, so it must be a good time to buy stocks!

People saying...

The end of the downfall !

food for thought

I need some help. I don't understand the interpretation of these indices. If something contracted at a -3.5% pace one month and contracts again at -2.8%, is that really a rebound? I have the same issue with the ISM. I will admit I could probably do some work to figure this out on my own, but I am looking for some free knowledge here.

so is that it?  we just hit the bottom and are headed back up now?  that wasnt so bad after all....

Another example of fallout.

Restaurant entrepreneurs get misleading information about how strong the market is based on ponzi credit.

As a result, they dump their money, time and effort into a business and then have the rug pulled out from under them.

The fed's main two mandates are to ensure stable prices and maximum sustainable employment. FAILURE on both counts. Why? Because they started serving wall street and not main street.

The fed perpetuated a ponzi scheme. WHat a sham(e).

How many of the original respondents have gone bust?
Is the data really comparable at a time when restaurants are closing at a ferocious pace?

If Timbabwe was in a bowling league, 3,000 would be the new 300.

I was in Palm Springs last weekend. Places were packed and there was an hour wait for most of them. They weren't cheap restaurants either. The top end is not feeling the pinch yet -- at least out there.

Per their website, this association seems to be mostly about franchises and chains. Here in Portland, we have large numbers of unique-location restaurants. I'd be interested to see if they are doing better or worse than the chains.

There is

I am friendly with the owners of two independent (and high-quality) breakfast-lunch restaurants. At both, business is holding steady.

One guy told me that individually people are spending less, but more customers are coming in, particularly at lunch. He thinks people are doing more discretionary eating-out at lunch/brunch rather than dinner -- it's cheaper. We toyed around with advertising slogans: he liked "Lunch! It's the New Dinner!"

On the other hand, the high end bistro a couple of blocks away which had reported "no problems" to the newspaper a few months ago had a big sign in the window reading "Two courses / $22," which for that place is cheap. And proclaiming Tuesday as "Free Corkage Night:" BYOB at no charge. That's a huge concession.

The rumor that Timbabwe has hired on Chuck Norris to save the country, is completely unsubstantiated.

I know I received four restaurant gift certificates for Christmas and have used all of them already.

Personally, I have no interest in whether people in the US are allowed assault weapons or whatnot. I can understand the original intent of allowing the general populace to be armed so as to be able to overthrow the government as required. A noble intent indeed.

It seems to me though that using an assault weapon against the trained US military is a little like pissing on a pouncing tiger. You might find it satisfying for a second or so, but the tiger isn't really going to notice.

Having said that, even the US military would have to give up eventually against a population that doesn't want it there. I'm not sure if having the general populace armed to begin with would make a whole lot of difference to the withdrawal time though....

But I wasn't thinking of "such" an external disturbance, which is hopefully unlikely. Was thinking about a rather more possible "civil" one.

From Financial Times: Insight: Time to expose those CDOs

In recent weeks, bankers at places such as JPMorgan Chase and Wachovia have been quietly sifting data trying to ascertain what has happened to those swathes of troubled CDO of ABS.

The conclusions are stunning. From late 2005 to the middle of 2007, around $450bn of CDO of ABS were issued, of which about one third were created from risky mortgage-backed bonds (known as mezzanine CDO of ABS) and much of the rest from safer tranches (high grade CDO of ABS.)

Out of that pile, around $305bn of the CDOs are now in a formal state of default, with the CDOs underwritten by Merrill Lynch accounting for the biggest pile of defaulted assets, followed by UBS and Citi.

The real shocker, though, is what has happened after those defaults. JPMorgan estimates that $102bn of CDOs has already been liquidated. The average recovery rate for super-senior tranches of debt – or the stuff that was supposed to be so ultra safe that it always carried a triple A tag – has been 32 per cent for the high grade CDOs. With mezzanine CDO’s, though, recovery rates on those AAA assets have been a mere 5 per cent.

...
But with the ABX now suggesting that triple A subprime mortgage assets are worth around 40 cents on the dollar (depending on the precise vintage), the message from that might almost be too optimistic in relation to some CDOs. So where does that leave the banks? In reality we will not know whether that horrific 95 per cent loss is unusual until the rest of the CDO of ABS are liquidated too. But for my part, I suspect that the saga strengthens the case for financiers now biting the bullet – and conducting some open auctions of this stuff, to get a bit of market price discovery.

...
After all, if an open auction ends up pricing mortgage-linked CDOs near zero, at least the capital hit to the banks and insurance companies will be clear; and if it is higher than zero, it might even cheer investors up.

Either way, until investors get some sense of what something might – or might not – be worth, it will be painfully hard to rebuild trust in capital markets and banks alike.

Those American officials who are implementing flashy new “stress tests” of banks would do well to take note.

The Federal Reserve's new long-run forecasts should help keep inflation expectations anchored at a time when a decline would be "most unwelcome," San Francisco Fed President Janet Yellen said on Friday.

Janet you silly bitch it should be obvious to everyone you fools don't have a friigng clue.

I think this is a pretty good indicator to watch.

The wife and I paid off all debt except our underwater mortgage in the last 6 months. We also built up a year's worth of savings and helped a few family members take care of a bit of debt.

We feel relatively safe now, and this is AFTER my wife was told she was being laid off a few weeks ago.

We are starting to eat out again. Why? Because there are a few restaurants that we actually like, and we don't want good restaurants going out of business. We are trying to eat out a bit again, just a little.

I suspect others are doign the same, now that Americans have spent 6 months in a mad rush to start saving money again. Those who have might have enough to spend a little now.

It's the one item that many of us buy, but never get a chance to use, unlike any other consumer item.

.
Just guessing here, since I can't get at good detailed information: people with jobs are working harder than ever, to make up for people who are laid off. The poorest are working 2 or more part-time jobs to get by. So they eat at the chains because they're too tired and time-constrained to make their own food.

That's something I noticed a lot working at the food bank-- the poorest people would go for cheap processed food, mostly carbs, you could nuke in the wave, versus foods that required prep time. They were constantly exhausted, working long hours for low pay, but getting fat because they didn't have time for exercise, or time to prepare healthy food.

Another thing I've noticed in Portland: people are conducting business meetings in restaurants more and more. I suspect they are cutting office rents.

I think it is hilarious that people who know nothing about guns throw this term around as if they DO know something about guns.

I've found that 100% of the people I've ever met who want to "ban assault weapons" can't even define what one is.

The first hilarious misconception they generally have is, they assume that "assault weapons" as defined by the shitheads in Congress, are fully automatic.

We all know the data that has been coming out has been horrible, to say the least. But I try to pay attention to what's going on around me (in real-life, I suppose) to keep things in perspective as opposed to getting lost in the numbers that occurred in the past.

Mostly housing but also, at least in my area across from where I work, about 75% of commercial real estate (offices, warehouses) became vacant practically overnight. But for the past, say 2 weeks, I've noticed a good bit of those empty offices/warehouses are being occupied or are experiencing a lot of traffic from electricians or whatever, I guess, working on them and just getting them ready for future occupants. Maybe those places have already been sold or its the owners fixing them up. Who knows? But I think it's a positive sign.

I'm not saying everything is great now all the sudden. I still see a lot of For Rent/For Sale/ For lease signs up all over the place but it seems that progress is being made at least from what I've noticed in my area.

U.S.-U.N. Moment of Truth Arrives With Overt Invasion of Bosnia

"By late 1993, however, the Bosnian army had expanded to a force of some 200,000 soldiers. Although initially crippled by the fact that the Croats had disarmed and imprisoned the thousands of Muslims serving in HVO militia units, the Bosnian army continued to improve its discipline and morale and maintained its reputation as the only truly multi-sectarian army in the war.

"When units run by pre-war Muslim gangsters, who were credited with saving Sarajevo in the first days of the war, began seizing Serb and Croat civilians on Sarajevo streets to dig trenches at the front, the Bosnian government disarmed the hoodlum units in a one-day coup that cost 200 lives. From that point on, Bosnian civilians of any religion had little to fear from their own army, but much to fear from the savage "ethnic cleansing" of the Serbs, and similar though smaller and more isolated actions by local Croat militias."

"The French inveighed against air strikes, saying they would endanger the 6,000 French troops that are the largest contingent among 26,000 U.N. troops in Bosnia trying to protect relief convoys and the disarmed Bosnian civilians in "safe areas" under U.N. protection. The British, with 2,500 troops in Bosnia, threatened to veto in the Security Council any U.S. resolution to lift the arms embargo.

If restaurants are taking gift certificate receipts into income in the period sold then they're violating GAAP.

The proper procedure is to record a liability for future redemptions against the receipt of cash, then as certificates are redeemed, the liabilities are taken into revenue. A typical "compromise" approach is to estimate non-redemptions and gradually take that into revenue as well and reverse it if redemptions exceed the expected rate by recording an expense in the period of redemption for excessive redemptions (similar to the way that an allowance for doubtful accounts and bad debt writeoff works when you collect a previously written-off debt, but in reverse).

Of course, a lot of restaurants probably use a third party to handle these debit cards. If that's the case, then they shouldn't be taking anything into revenue until the redemption happens, since the cash received is all going to the financial entity that runs the program (HSBC or whoever). When the sale is made and paid for with the card, the "right way" would be recording a receivable from HSBC, but chances are that it's a short settlement (2 to 7 days) so they would just treat it as cash instead, same as credit cards.

Down in FL some 15 or so years ago, the popular trend was to have outdoor hot dog stands manned by young women wearing thong bikinis.  They passed an ordinance against it due to the no. of accidents that resulted.

"I think an external disturbance would actually help us... we're fighters mostly remember...."

And yet the army and marines have had a difficult time meeting their recruiting needs.

G.W. and Dick were fighters mostly too. G.W. sat out his war in the guard and Dick sat it out in college. Rush and O'Reily sat it out also.

The vast majority of Americans want nothing to do with the military.

G.W. told them to go shopping after 9/11 and they expect at least a bronze star for their heroics.

Careful, UN is coming to theater near you! They are gonna snatch your kids and turn them into COMMIES! It's actually possible to make pretty good choice in FF restaurants, but people don't, on the whole. We have been programmed to seek out salty/sweet/carby goodness because that's what kept us alive for millions of years. So people are just following their taste buds and instincts here. Also, some of these foods are mildly addictive, like high fructose corn syrup and coffee.

I don't see these people as 'slave fodder,' I see them as making rational choices in the context of biological programming. It's rational for them to get fat so as to have something to live on if the food bank starts to run short. Then again, I see lots of mothers sacrificing their own nutritional health to make sure their kids get enough protein. Is that 'slave fodder' behavior? I would say not.

I'm looking for a new "handle". How about this one:

We use rain barrels at our place. A nice backup supply, plus I use them to water the planting areas they are closest to. We'll be adding cisterns next, both above & below ground, with manual pumps.

They were constantly exhausted, working long hours for low pay, but getting fat because they didn't have time for exercise, or time to prepare healthy food.

Slave fodder. Sad that people are pushed to the limit like this, whether by their own choices or being channeled there by other forces. We drive home past fast-food row, and they are always completely packed with drive-thru lines round the lot. For variations of greasy, salty, carby, meat-flavored cheap garbage.....It's fine if that's your choice, not so fine as the nutritional intake for people in dire straits already.

At no time in history has this country ever starved to death tens of millions of it's own citizens as a political tool. Russia and China cannot make that claim. Pointy sticks didn't work for Ukrainians.

TM, just in case you missed the memo...the sacred constitution has been abandoned for quite some time now...

Quaint of you to support it though...your sacrifice is important tot us.

I am just saying your M16 or whatever rifles you got there has not been helpful at all against your own facistlike plutocracy government. They give your gun rights all right but steal back everything you own with "hellcare" and whatever. It is actually a really nice excuse for your kinds to do actually nothing at all for the society and instead masturbate with your latest nightscope rifle and pretend to be big brave soldier.

Like they say, "in the USA people are afraid of their own goverment but in the France the government is afraid of the people". I wonder why...

Hey, how come we're getting the jackboots in here?

They're the first to wave the flag and the Constitution and are very happy to send others to fight & die for their gold-plated asses. Buncha hypocritical wussies!

Oswalds?"

No, Gabriella.

Doesn't make me sorry, either. We stopped going there years ago because they refused to seat us (a couple) at a four-top, whether there was a wait or not. When there was a wait list, parties of four would blow by us to empty tables while we waited for an empty two-top. The second time they did that, we didn't bother to stay.

Those believing the Constitution has been completely forgotten by the American public is wrong. We are slow to anger, but once angered, Hell hath no fury like the American Spirit. At the beginning of WWII, a Japanese Admiral said they had awakened a sleeping giant by attacking Pearl Harbor. This notion of the G-20 providing a framework for a NWO will provide the reason for a reawakening of the sleeping giant called "we the people". You and the govt. seem to have forgetten that we grant you these powers rather than you allowing us certain rights as you see fit.

....we have converted all grey water (showers, W&D, baths, sinks) to drain to cistern which pumps to gardens and other landscaping. Plants LOVE grey water. The only thing going to Septic system is toilets & kitchen sink - significantly cutting input. Good move - makes total sense.
