Nostrovia,

This new comment system is not as good as the old one.

So, we the users look for another blog .
Thanks for the old Holoscan blog CR .

Good riddance to you if you are going to let something as small as this bother you. It's the intelligence and community that counts.

CR is just trying to find the path of least resistance for the great intelligence and community that he and Tanta and others have built.

If Werner goes and takes Jas with him, then I'm in love with the new comment system.

Yah, this is going to take some time to navigate.

Like the economic troubles, this too is confusing. But when we see the gaol posts, all wil come into view. (test?)

Gaol posts??? Barley, are you foreshdowing something about your investment behaviour?

I'm testing this system but there's a pay the piper call the tune thing, no? Free, or free-ish, riders need to go with the host, no?

Haven't tried links yet but will.

C

I love it for threading alone. I couldnt stand haloscan's flat mode.

The flat mode had it's strengths. No doubling back to find out if new comments were added to old threads. I also liked how the flat mode seemed to foster a group stream of consciousness that worked for me.

Go to controls and punch flat.
You have the power.

A lot of previously "bulletproof" crops are getting hit by drought or bugs or flooding, etc. A good thing to keep in mind if there are staples you get that aren't grown in your area.

It is true that there seems to be a biblical kind of pestilence on crops worldwide, for whatever reason of global climate change or higher-power wrath. I keep saying, and I know it hasn't been profitable yet, but get yourself some crops in yer portfolio.

Next week, I'm going to do a little more research into the best ways to invest in crops, beyond your basic DBA.

I'll let you know what I come up with.

I love real maple syrup - time to start stocking up!

is there a maple syrup double long ETF?

Thank you, CR. This Jim the Realtor video has expanded my understanding of how much investment and work is required to be a pot farmer. I had no idea of the electrical and ventilation systems required.

"I had no idea of the electrical and ventilation systems required."

That's how they catch them out here in flyover - subpoena utility records then look for unusual electrical demand - stake them out and bust them. Result of that was for grow ops to then buy their own generators & go offline. It is a lot tougher to try and pick up on excessive gasoline or diesel purchases in rural areas - lotsa folks have tractors.

Cool part of that grow op was how well they were set up to survey & defend the place. Probably were 'survivalists' to boot.

The only thing I didn't see was the mold - grow ops usually have black mold everywhere. The ventilation must have eliminated that.

It is well known in the community - they busted a grow op across the river that had their operation UNDERGROUND - dug out the equivalent of a cave under their barn - underground to hide the thermal signature Dawg mentions. Had big generators to power the lights.

Pot grow ops are NOTHING like the problems the meth labs are - worse chemicals & crazier people. We got those around here too but fewer now than there were say 3-5 years ago.

Thermal signatures are hard to mask. That's why the ventilation.

The good stuff can be smelled a mile away. Another reason for ventilation. Disperse fumes

Some folks cover it up with a hot tub room

How many levels deep can a pot discussion get?

I'll respond to my own question. You know, CR, the multi-level nature of this new system does remind me a lot of the conversations we had back in college, 40 years ago, where every idea just dug deeper into the truth until you got so far into it that, wow, it was like, Led Zepplin time.

You gotta keep this system!

It can get a lot deeper. Especially if you start posting links to videos. YouTube - Smoke on the water

You know, I am a long-time Deep Purple fan. But I have never understood fascination with Smoke on the Water.

Now, if you want to go deeper and understand the essence of Deep Purple, well...

YouTube - Deep Purple - The Aviator - USA 1996

You are right. We are going to need to get more creative if we are going to go deeper. I think that this Raconteurs video does the trick. YouTube - The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldier

That's kind of trippy with so many embedded replies. I was scrolling down, but for a second I thought I was zooming out.

Or maybe I've just been enjoying Jim's video a bit too much:)

This thread might get deeper for 40 more years

WWCnCD?

Good roundup. Now you have to find a mystery picture to attach to your handle, CR.

what was the asking price?

330K.... way outside of SD tho... painful drive if you ask me....

lots of land tho....

Yeah, I was interested until I heard the price. 330k is way out of line. The thing is a tear down. I'd buy it for 150k.

anyone know how the land is zoned?

Hey not to be a meany, but the CRbot interface is better than JSKit (until CR and or Ken Cooper make it useable).

What if we comment over there? Mibbit IRC client widget  via browser or

irc.realize.org:9996 #calculatedrisk via mIRC or other IRC client.

Maybe CR should post a how to use this new commenting system video. I think Yoda should narrate and tell me how to get an avatar without using The Force.

Can someone twll me if avatr has to be a certain type of file or size?

Avatar Size Limits: to keep forums fast, especially where images are uploaded, there will be a file size limit that you are forced to obey. If an avatar is too large, you will not be able to upload it. Common size limits range from 12K to 36K.

js-kit will convert to a thumbnail. i wasn't paying attention and upload a 886K file without a problem.

My Mac doesn't want to load avatar; any thoughts?

Excellent!

B2 thanks.... did you see my three thirty... it was directed at you but might not have made it depending on how you're viewing this...

Cheers!

Once upon a time that house was medium nice.

That horrific 6% is annualized, right, right?
So it it went down half a point, the previous quarter, so
it went down maybe 1% for the year?

The rate of change is troubling.

Did you see my suggestions in the previous thread?

An avatar is a picture that you think symbolizes you.

Aside from the fact that I am ineffable, I've never
figured out how to get one.

My avatar shows billions swirling into a black hole.

Anyway, that is annualized. The evil part is the magnitude of the revision. Even if an honest mistake it shows that events are getting uncontrollable. Next I expect somebody to fat finger a circuit breaking trade.

Neither NPR, nor the evening news, from which I expect nothing,
stated that it was annualized. And you had to read fairly far
down in the msn money articule to find out that it was annualized.

NPR did say that the first estimate is always based on some guesses
and the models are ususally ok, only now they're not.

It's scary how thin the veneer of competence is showing.

Dawg - + 1

Maple syrup and herb. The plot turns. The mounties are in
concert with the maple cartel. Buffett goes long - corners the
market and slips out of his derivatives. And back at high on the hill
they burn the midnite oil ... and all is still. The haloscan hovers.

You know, I agree with the many commenters that have noted that Haloscan was a much better system.

For those of you that are disappointed and angry at the new system, I think you should ask for, no, demand your subscription fees returned to you forthwith.

I'm sure Bill would be glad to return your contributions immediately.

Aside from the fact that I am ineffable, I've never figured out how to get one.

I'm going long pizza delivery places that have a lot of franchises in towns that also have a high concentration of banks.

Just unthread it and then thread it again.

How do you upload a picture?
How do you know how big it is?
Don't take all the cute cat pictures.

Well, the "All Comments" RSS feed page is at least easier to read at a glance. Thanks for activating it, CR.

Does anyone know if you can get CR's blog on the Kindle?

I've been reading the CR blog on a Kindle for months, using the built-in "experimental" web browser. Haloscan had some issues, but I don't know if JS-Kit will be better or worse.

Can you post from a kindle?

To repeat: Haloscan died again and is going away soon. So moving was not a choice - the only choice was which new comment system.

The interface will be improved. I'll try to make it as good or better than Haloscan (by working with JS-Kit). Old comments will be moved over. Search features will be added, etc. Ken was aware a move was coming, although the moved was forced today.

Best to all

It is fine, and your posts are why I visit anyway...and those remain extremely valuable and appreciated!

im fine with the new comments change... ive been lurking here since october 2k8, its really been educamational. i really think you post the best relevant news events and comment 'evenly'. kudos! i hope ppl dont leave just because of the new comment style! theres also alot of comedy 'gold' here that i think gives some relief to the general doom. back into the shadows i go....

Bill/CR -- thanks for all your excellent work.

In my experience, folks that don't pay for a product or a service will devalue the worth of what they receive.

Keep up the good work, maybe a registration system with a required contribution will filter out the many free loading and irritating posters to this site.

I don't know if anyone else bothered doing the calculation but, inflation adjusted like the CPI, the DOW is almost at 1966 levels. If you don't believe me, do it yourself.

Yves has a post on the upper muckety muck super special AAA tranches of CDOs returning only 40 cents on the dollar,

Predictable, because CDOs were made form the mediocre tranches of RMBS. So they are entirely garbage.

Ok, I have a picture on my cellphone. What then?

I don't have email on my cellphone, nor do I want it.
But if I did, what would I do?

can you "text" it to people? if so you can text it to your email i believe. worst comes to worst text it to your buddy with an iphone (shameless mac plug)....

then download it and and right click to see size. lots of cell phones brag about taking big pictures so it might (most certainly will be) to big...

You'll have to use a program to down size it... i'd open by double clicking and if and try the program that opens...

ok so now that you've decided you're not going to do this... hummm.... ask a buddy who's in the area! Laughing out loud

good luck....

oh yea to text to email just enter in the email instead of the phone number like you would a text....

YouTube - Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Zero"

Does any remember this from last summer?

The Shrinking Influence of the US Federal Reserve

Officials with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have informed Bernanke about a plan that would have been unheard-of in the past: a general examination of the US financial system. The IMF's board of directors has ruled that a so-called Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) is to be carried out in the United States. It is nothing less than an X-ray of the entire US financial system.

As part of the assessment, the Fed, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the major investment banks, mortgage banks and hedge funds will be asked to hand over confidential documents to the IMF team. They will be required to answer the questions they are asked during interviews. Their databases will be subjected to so-called stress tests -- worst-case scenarios designed to simulate the broader effects of failures of other major financial institutions or a continuing decline of the dollar.

Yes...
<<<<Under its bylaws, the IMF is charged with the supervision of the international monetary system.>>>>

BB said as much at his HH testimony in response to RP(?)

<<<When the final report on the risks of the US financial system is released in 2010...>>>>

????will it be relevant????

Since when is 200amp service a biggy? Don't most homes have at least THAT now?

Yes, most homes since around 1985 have a 200 amp panel. Lesser load panels such as 100 amp would be for a condo or apartment.2cents.

Re: maybe a registration system with a required contribution will filter out the many free loading and irritating posters to this site.

Just the usual:

We're fucked.

Oh yeah, new commenting system.

CR,

The commenting format is just fine. And hey
I can now have an avatar! How cool is that? The complaints make the CR community sound a bit geriatric.

Re: The complaints make the CR community sound a bit geriatric.

WTF is your point punk?

I am so old, I learned to type on a manual typewriter. You know,
with the "carriage" that you had to "throw". And you had the hit the keys in a certain way, or some would be lighter than others. Also, I predate white out. People didn't get carpal tunnel syndrome when they had to lift their fingers to throw the carriage.

I can explain what a carriage is if fallon would like to know.
Does this mean my comments are obsolete too?

I take it as you actually know what you get on about... Wink

Manual typewriters... Yep, that's what I learned to type on. You also had that little bell (ding!) that would tell you when you had to "throw" so that you wouldn't travel too far. I can't remember whether you could set the bell to go off earlier or not though...

any chance of a pop-up window option for comments? makes it easier to browse post comments in parallel,

You can get a new window for each post with comments by right-clicking the Comments link and opening in a new window.

so I take it you have to refresh to see new comments?

click current page number on bottom right

Ha. My picture works from another blog. Pot should be legalized.

True. Then people could grown hemp too.

The hemp might decrease the umpfh in pot if it cross
pollenates.

That's what I've read too. Natural pot, not the mutant hydroponic stuff, is less potent, but very useful.

FYI, if you go to the @ Controls at the bottom of the page and set:
order: ascending
threading: off (flat)

Then to refresh, you can click the "1" at the top of the comments page and the new comments will be the first listed. Saves some scrolling and refreshing time.

hit the control at the bottom, and you can have it either
way.

BSR says: so I take it you have to refresh to see new comments?

Yeah, but don't do a full refresh, just click the number of the latest page at the bottom of the comments.

U.S. gov't report refers to widespread marijuana use in Japan+

Speaking of dope heads, what in the hell is the US goverments frigging problem.

Look, if pot were legal the monopoly profits would go away.
I'm convinced that it all meets at the top. Money being paid
etc. There is a famous movie. . .Key Largo maybe, where prohibition has gone away and a formerly wealthy mobster is mourning its disappearance.

Not sure about the other stuff; meth is dangerous as well as really bad I understand. Oh, well, maybe we should just let the weak or depressed just commit chemical suicide.

Or, tax it and use the money SOLELY for rehab.

Like the gov't would be willing to keep its hands off the money.

Let's see if my avatar makes it . . .

She's driving (Liz bites nails, dr ok), goes to church every day,
loves to take us out to eat. Walks better.

I think she wasn't eating enough before this happened. I've put 3 or 4 pounds on her, which she needed. No luck with selling house in Balto.

Which is worse, wall street bankers that burn up billions of bucks or pot smokers that getting stoned?

wall st bankers that burn up billions while they're stoned

Thanks sOmeone.

now I see how to do this.

Jim the Realtor - always entertaining.

lawyerliz,
what I really miss typing on carbon
sheets and using a spirit master rotatory
duplicator with manual crank & fluid pump.
damn the fumes smelled so good and what
a totally great buzz. still have a manual typewriter
at home. spendy portable in a nice leather case.

Ahh, the grade school smell of the duplicator sheets they
used to hand out. I always sniffed it. My mom has an IBM
Selectric which produces the most be-autiful copy--an I has only
one third the space of an m or w. So why don't computers do this?

She could make 15 or so copies at a time.

Indoor pot farming uses a lot of lighting. Proper lighting in the
appropriate spectrum raises the thc content significantly.

CR, there is an econ indicator that shows higher correlation to the business cycle (well at least to the stock performance)
St. Louis Fed: Series: OUTBS, Business Sector: Output

unfortunately, it is not updated as often as GDP, however it might be more useful to judge production side contribution to the GDP... and the robustness of economy.

a spirit master rotatory

Is that what we called "mimeograph"?

Yup!
I remember those from grade school. That purpley-blue ink....

Jim's find is a great investment. Honestly, a whole lot of people are going to be looking for a way to escape reality. What better way than a little skunk, or red hair?

how do you upload the avitar??

I thought ALL pot was "natural pot". Is there another kind? Maybe like synthetic scotch? <eg>

Well, everything is natural, sorta.

But I understand pot has been hybridized and has much more
buzz to it. So to the extent that boxer dogs and persian cats
with pushed in snouts are unnatural, pot is unnatural now.

On that note, nitey nite.

ice analogy. there have been a fantastic number of selective bred and improved pot generations. the plant takes three months to reach maturity and only female plants produce buds. only female clones are grown in a controlled environment where strains can be precisely blended. the genetics of pot and the varieties in effect, flavor, and other properties make marijuana more varied than wine.

And much much more enjoyable....ahhh for legalization!

at least, that is what my friends tell me...

For someone with skills, thats not a bad investment. The basics are there.

If ever I do have an avatar can my avatar have an avatar.
So lonely in cyber space.

I wish all comments was on one page. Don't like nesting Sad

my name changes everytime I post...I give up..

click on your post, click register (you don't have to go anywhere, just select you name, password, etc )

Now we can bitch about Banksters and nesting!

I love the nesting. Now we just need a way to collapse threads we don't want to follow.

Any one remember the Ca Marijuana Initiative in the early 70s? I was 19, Nixon was Pres, sinsemilla was a new thing, SD was a beach town, the Ag check station on the 5 wasn't concerned with human smuggling. <toke>

I'm also for one page and no nesting. Hope CR goes that way. Nesting and multiple pages is an incredibly inane design choice on JS-Kit's part. Not Bill's fault at all.

I agree. It's nice to see comments connected to each other, but I'd rather have it the haloscan way with it chronological. I guess if we all unthreaded and posted that way it would make sense.

tonight on the PBS newshour with jim lehrer excellent interview with the prez...whether you think this guy is right or wrong, after seeing this interview, you cant help but feeling that he cares and is sincere

Newsmaker: Obama Outlines Goals for Afghanistan, Iraq | Online NewsHour | February 27, 2009 | PBS

That;s what makes me feel bad for the guy. I htink he wanted to make changes & knew the only way a black man could get the job was if the country was fucked. I hope he manages somehow, but even if we go down, I like the feeling that somebody cares.

Will the new comment system significantly increase CR's page views? Could be a nice side benefit.

http://www.cepr.net/documents/publications/baby-boomer-wealth-2009-02.pdf

"The Wealth of the Baby Boom Cohorts After the Collapse of the Housing Bubble"

Renting >> Owning over the last 5 years..

From the executive summary:

Finally, the projections show that for both age groups, the renters within each wealth quintile in
2004 will have more wealth in 2009 than homeowners in all three scenarios. In the second and third
scenarios, renters will have dramatically more wealth in 2009 than homeowners who started in the
same wealth quintile. Homeownership is not everywhere and always an effective way to accumulate
wealth. For those who owned a home in the last few years, the collapse of the housing bubble led to
the destruction of much or all of their wealth.

Do you think the stimulus and the housing plan will work? I wonder. The deficit is going up and inflation may be just around the corner. I saw a good article on this on

Recession Info Center | Recession Information | Employment

I don't believe that inflation is an issue at this point, in fact, I firmly believe that we are in a highly dangerous deflationary phase right now. I have no doubt that the people in charge would love to see a positive inflation number right about now.

After all we have to find away to reduce individual, municipal and government debt. It either has to be inflated or defaulted away. Until such occurs, I don't think we will enjoy a real recovery.

i tend to agree... we seem to be going into a protracted deflationary environment. i hear all about inflation and hyperinflation..but all i see is ppl wanting to cut back and spend less... trying to find the best deal. with the ppl i deal with from work, friends and family... we're just cutting back... trying to pay bills... and a bit worried about income ... ie keeping there jobs.

So I see we have a new commenting system. Smile

With the triumvirate of threading, paging, and comments not having their own window, this looks to be a difficult port for CR Companion.

JS-Kit's CEO mentioned a few weeks ago that they'd be implementing many of CR Companion's features this quarter, so maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised.

Ken,

You add-on is far superior to what JS-KIT has delivered to-date. I am quite skeptical that they'll deliver and I'm the one who suggested JS-KIT to Mish a long time ago.

That would be most excellent. Sorry to see all your work for CR lost Ken.

Ken: Those guys should just hire you. Seriously. Have they approached you about a job?

Ken, CR companion is great. You've set the bar for econ-blog comment sections. Let's see if JS-Kit can even come close Wink

This sucks. All I want is the name of the commenter and the text, I don't need the fancy border that uses too much space or the avatars,...after the initial thrill wears off, what the hell good are they? And it looks like following the comments on two separate posts is going to be a real pain in the neck.
Ken Cooper- my only hope is you.

Crap,...and I have to keep on refreshing the damn thing. CR Companion spoiled me.

something makes me think ken has something cooking that he is not unhappy about.

One more thing, Ken.

Wouldn't it be relatively easy to replace your comment reader with an RSS/Atom reader? On the surface, it looks to me like that would not be so difficult. For most, threading would not be an issue if they had CR Companion's facilities.

Hmm.. is it going to be possible to somehow interface JS-Kit with a good ol newsreader like tin or slrn? That way you can easily marked which post have been read or not.

My partner & I have been pricing RE for years now, and it seems any place with some practical usage (like a hayfield for small farm) is priced out of reach, but some BS crap like a 600 sq ft condo is nearly free. Same goes for lots of goods. If you need it or can make a tangible asset from it, it's too spendy. If it's a luxuray item, it's hella cheap.

BTW, thanks to everyone for all the kind words about CR Companion. You've made my day.

Hmm.. is it going to be possible to somehow interface JS-Kit with a good ol newsreader like tin or slrn?

It's hard enough to get people to use an IRC client. Newsreaders would never happen, IMHO. Too bad, I loved usenet.

Northern Trust seeks to repay bailout money | Crain's Chicago Business

You know I might be interested in that house - for the right price - but I'd worry about past due debt the prior owners had, NOT with the house mortgage lender, but with the other more vicious unsavory lot, which might come knocking on the door looking to collect when they find it occupied and won't take "nowt to do with me - this place is under new management" for an answer. I know how these buggers operate - I watched "The Sopranos".

What to do - apart from not buying ?

Re: I don't believe that inflation is an issue at this point, in fact, I firmly believe that we are in a highly dangerous deflationary phase right now.

Something along the lines of currency devaluation seems more credible than inflation...

mock turtle,

not only caring and sincere, but an actual grown up whom has been willing to assume the full responsibility of being president from day one. no sense of entitlement what so ever. smart fellow too. so we can bitch and moan about how he is trying to tackle a problem few of us would want to walk into first day on the job.... but man, what an astounding change of presence in the white house. i do wish he kick some ass of the asshat ceos in the banking and auto industries. time for many of these folks to just go away. i mean nardelli as a frickin' turnaround ceo for chrysler. WTF?

That "astounding change of presence" might keep you feeling warm and fuzzy, but I prefer policy that actually makes sense for ordinary people.

Wall Street Obama giving trillion dollar backrubs to banksters isn't astounding. Nor is it change.

If you picked today to subscribe to Worth Magazine and bank at Heritage Community, my condolences.

But chin up: here's Homeland Security spending your tax dollars on how to save your pets from terrorists.

so that would be....tax cuts? always works...right?

i did qualify that i am not a 100% obama kool aid drinker and i will bitch with rest of them about propping up zombie banks and giving any money to any company with asshats like nardelli, lewis, pandit, etc.

Now what do the tellers say...

The thing to watch here, will be impacts on traffic and the impacts of this conversion disruption. IMHO, pay close attention to helping people learn and providing education to help people learn the system, or they will go away and not come back! Just my opinion and CR, you do a great thing here and i know this was not your choice, but maybe a few links or FYI-like pointers will go a long way to keep this transition smooth.

Good luck!!

You'd think the booze would wear off after the 1st 24 hrs.

On a longer term view, the Weekly Chart shows the Dow may be forming a downward-sloping channel over the last five months. This range is developing nicely and forecasts a drop to the 6,500 level if the lower boundary of the pattern is reached next week. Continue to watch 7,000 for signs of weakness.

Keep an eye on the 7,200 level, as a break through this zone could lead to another test at resistance at 7,400.

You have to remain semi-sober to work this thing. Sorta will suck after midnight. Thanks again Shnaps for the booze...

Way cool to make real world connections from the internets. Sober is a state of mind though.

That house is such a POS. Why is Cali RE such total crap? It's like, We don't care what we put up, we don't care how we live, as long as the buzz goes on and on and on. And somehow, you can never get away from that freeway hum, no matter where you are. Blech.

Nice bunny - and them's good eatin'! Wink

Was it the file size?

Nah, cookies. I had them totally turned off, so it wouldn't load. Got to pay the piper. This pic is 'stolen' so I it's just a test, I'll put something else up tomorrow.

Scone,
Cali is a very strange place. I mean Cali in the parts of the state that you think...huh? Had a friend in San Louis Opisbo pay 600K for a rundown rancher. And they sold it for a profit and moved to Eugene with enough for a substantial down payment! Their place in Cali made our worst impoverished meth infested rental here in NOPO look very good. I really have tried to be open minded about Cali when visting over the last 30 years...but just do not get it.

I used to live there, never got used to it. I don't think I've ever adapted to West Coast "whatever, man" culture. The 'slacker' thing up here doesn't thrill me either. Kind of depressing to be around people who do nothing but get high and hang out. I can't stand fried, brain dead types like that.

Meh. I'm getting grumpy. Off to bed.

OK, I've figured it out. The new comments thang is like being at a cocktail party where you don't know anyone, but are in a good enough mood to make small talk. You kind of jump around into different conversations. Some of them are so good you hope you remember them the next day, and run into the participants again. Some are just very disjointed, but will make for good water-cooler convo at work on Monday.

Joanna,

Welcome to the lounge! Shaken or stirred? And I am not talking about the drink.

Shaken and stirred. No matter how much I try to curtail my internet presence, I am compelled to participate.

are we not all compelled to participate by your presence? Wink

you are gettng the hang of it. moving from haloscan will be okay. really.

If you go to the Controls link at the bottom and for "Order" select "Descending", then for "Threading" select "off (flat)" it will come in like a reversed Haloscan...just refresh the number 1 and you will get the latest comments in order of posting at the top, no scrolling.

Thanks to whomever posted this on another thread, seems like the closest to the Haloscan experience...and if you want to get the threaded conversation, just change the control setting.

I'd love to meet some fellow CR peeps someday...

And their cats? Wink

No cats. It is a Friday during lent remember. Wink

But if some of us talk in threads and others talk like all Haloscan like it will be like worlds colliding!

energyecon,

I agree with the devaluation. However, I believe that it could be called inflation especially if it is accompanied by a money supply multiplier.

BTW, sorry if I came across a little harsh on the Setser post yesterday. I am a little aggravated with Setser as he is downplaying the potential consequences of a break down of BW2.

RE,

Wish I had caught the reply - don't know what your thesis was, but I take major structural changes as a given at this point - "just" the how and when to be worked out.

Setser can be a bit pollyannaish, I thought the key takeaway was that much of the new T issuance was likely to be domestically absorbed. That means direct monetization, rates increasing or some mix IMNSHO...

Shaken and stirred. No matter how much I try to curtail my internet presence, I am compelled to participate.

It's the slo-mo trainwreck thing. You know what's happening, you know it's gonna be God-awful, but you just can not look.

Fed Officials Weighing ‘Exit Strategy’ for End of Recession
By Michael McKee

Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve’s efforts to bolster credit markets and revive growth pose a long-term risk of provoking inflation and worsening other problems that must be solved quickly when the crisis wanes, Fed policy makers said.

Central bank officials, after cutting interest rates almost to zero and more than doubling Fed assets to $1.9 trillion, should design an “exit strategy” that will enable them to steadily reduce credit, Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser said yesterday. He spoke at a New York conference that included economists and five other Fed district bank presidents.

(snip to money quote)
Other Fed programs will probably continue as the economy recovers, and many of the assets the Fed is buying, such as mortgage-backed securities, are long-term. The central bank may need to swap less-liquid assets on its balance sheet for Treasuries so it can more easily raise interest rates once the economy recovers, Plosser said.

He proposed the Fed seek an agreement with the Treasury Department to swap non-Treasury assets and non-discount-window loans for Treasuries, transferring credit risk to the U.S. fiscal authority. The move would provide the Fed with easier-to-sell securities, facilitating its efforts to tighten credit.

Ooops, meant but you just can't not look.

My suggestions (take with a grain of salt):

  • Allow only flat so everyone is on the same page
  • Have a one click quote function so it is easy to see what someone is replying
  • Also a link back to where the quoted material was originally posted

I agree - flat mode with a reference, like haloscan.

I think we are heading for a devaluation too.

I wonder if Warren Buffet had a clause in the puts he wrote on S&P making sure he was covered in a government currency intervention. He must have (if he's smart).

Ok so I've been using threads and posting flat trying to get the hang of this new thing. First I was with the Threads and now I'm with the Flats. But the Threads have the advantage over us. They can make their Thready comments and know what they are talking about and if we want to play their game we have to go into their mindset. But they can fully ignore us Flats. On the other hand, they would have a lot of trouble following the flats if they came into the game later. Perhaps the Flats is more like open chat and the threads is the more formal discussion room? Or is this all just new to me and old hat for the rest of you?

....only two bank failures this week. The FDIC is obviously way "under-gunned". Add to that the quasi-voluntary self-administered stress "test" - and you have the makings of a, "Get out of my room - you're not the boss of me", dialogue.

New thread on Negative equity in the UK

best to all

Loudocracy @ 10:10 - The threads eliminate the need for referencing, which I suppose is an advantage, but if you are trying to keep up with the overall conversation makes it impossible to follow. Not cool.

Did this house become vacant around the time CSC disappeared?

I once looked at a foreclosure house that had been a pot-farm... The one Jim showed was pretty ratty, however the one I saw had previously endured guard dogs being kept for long periods of time in the upstairs bedrooms, never being let out. By the time I got there they had already removed the carpets and (tried) to clean the floor boards, but the floor was permanently stained with dog poo. Very disturbing.
