That's too bad; I always liked restaurant performers.

CLIFF DIVING...peak restaurants?

Now is a great time to buy and sell er.. overpriced food?

Dammit should've shorted EAT today.

Is their a way to tell the difference in dining levels..fast food vs casual vs high end?

I wonder how dependent the restaurant industry is on gift cards. Last Christmas, I got a "Marble Slab" Gift Certificate, and I was like "who thinks to give this crap"?

crispy didn't McD's just say they were doing pretty well? I'm curious as to the criteria for the term "restaraunt" as well. Are bars included in this? I work in a bar, I'm not surprised in the least with these numbers. Our business has been way off as well. I will say it's picked up the past couple of weeks, even this week afer the Holidays I'm doing better and had a great day yesterday. It might be a regional thing though, the Paper mill here had shut down in November and there were rumors it wouldn't reopen. It reopened last week so people are somehwat more upbeat here now.

I find it interesting that the current bottom is about the same level as the early '04 peak growth...

Does this imply several years at 98?

I know we're eating out less and only at a few restaurants. Only one isn't 'mom and pop' owned.

The number of jobs lost through restaurant closure are going to dwarf many other sectors. The fact that many of the workers in this sector also have poor health insurance + poor layoff packages is going to hurt millions.

Lucifer - don't forget "No savings"

Neil, that and tourism. I live in Panama City Fl. We've been hurting bad for two years now. We had a huge housing boom and now of course the huge bust. We have little industry here save the Paper Mill, Arizona Chemical and the military. The tourist industry as well but with the economy the way it is, tourism isn't exactly booming. A real mess here.

The fact that many of the workers in this sector also have poor health insurance + poor layoff packages is going to hurt millions.

insurance and layoff packages... We're talking about F+B, right? Most of the workers are lucky if the employers don't skim processing fees from the credit card receipts.

We were in Las Vegas last week. The bars were packed.

I would like to apologize to the woman I groped in that piano bar.

my wife went to restaurant.com and purchased coupons for $2. one of the participating restuarants is Majors. you spend at least $35 and the coupon gave you a $25 discount. not bad feeding a family of 3 for $10 and have leftovers to boot. now, why are they not performing??

I sense that any social unrest might start in this group. Poorly paid, younger, large numbers, more physical and nothing to lose.

Since Obama's school choice seems to be a topic of conversation along these lines -
"Ironically, those gunning for them, if they are, are more likely to come from the ilk attending the private school." - I'll post this here.

I can tell just how many people here don't even bother to actually understand the school the Obama's will be sending their kids - Sidwell Friends School: Home

Or for those willing to rely on that famously inaccurate source of information, Sidwell Friends School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
'Sidwell Friends School is a pre-K-12 Quaker private school located in the United States with one campus in Washington, D.C. and one campus in the Bethesda unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Described as "the Harvard of Washington's private schools",[1] Sidwell was founded in 1883 by Thomas Sidwell. Its motto is Eluceat Omnibus Lux ("Let the light shine out from all"; it can also be translated as "by all," an allusion to the Quaker concept of inner light). All Sidwell Friends students attend Quaker meetings for worship weekly.

The school's admissions process is merit-based. As documented on the school's website, it gives preference in admissions decisions to members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), but otherwise does not discriminate on the basis of religion.

President-Elect Barack Obama is sending both his daughters, Sasha and Malia, to Sidwell for their education.[2] Previously, Presidents Teddy Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton sent their children to Sidwell, as did Vice President Al Gore.'

Amazing, those famous Republican elitists Teddy Roosevelt and Dick Nixon did the same thing as Obama. At least Nixon had a better connection to the school - 'His mother was a Quaker, and his upbringing is said to have been marked by conservative Quaker observances of the time, such as refraining from drinking, dancing, and swearing' Richard Nixon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That's right, Republican Nixon's children may have received preferential admissions treatment due to their family background. I still can't remember any outrage on the part of the American public about Nixon's distrust of public schools, however. Maybe because with Nixon, where he sent his kids to school seemed relatively unimportant as the body count ebbed and rose over the weeks, months, and years of his presidency.

Considering what is facing American society, I would have thought about where Obama's children go to school would be considered equally trivial, but that was an apparently mistaken belief.

Where is the outrage at Obama sending his children to a school that forces children to attend weekly services? Or the outrage that the Quakers refuse to be real American patriots, with their Christian beliefs forbidding the taking of life or practice of torture. Especially in light of the fact that many of the same loud voices now complaining about Obama's educational choices are those that have previously defended war and torture as part of compassionate conservatism in the service of a strong America, they should now talk about how Quakers are objectively anti-American or objectively pro-terrorist, or whatever other objective reason they need to foam at the latest outrage of a man they didn't vote for anyways.

I mean, read this statement from the Quakers to realize the immense folly of sending children to be educated within their framework -
'Quaker Declaration of Pacifism
"We utterly deny all outward wars and strife, and fightings with outward weapons, for any end, or under any pretense whatever; this is our testimony to the whole world. The Spirit of Christ by which we are guided is not changeable, so as once to command us from a thing as evil, and again to move unto it; and we certainly know, and testify to the world, that the Spirit of Christ, which leads us into all truth, will never move us to fight and war against any man with outward weapons, neither for the kingdom of Christ, nor for the kingdoms of this world."
- to Charles II, 1660

Does that restaurant.com crap work? There was a place we go to quite often, so we ordered $20 worth of certificates for $3X2, but haven't received them since, and it's been like a week. I'll let you guys know when I get them though.

well said.

i, for one, don't give one fat hoot where the nobama's send their kids to school. get over it.

Yes, but educated people are also less likely to fight as they feel that they have something to lose.

I live in a tourist town, but it's mostly daytrippers and it's also the off-season; not many people head down to the beach in January in Northern California, except surfers.

That said, the restaurants that I know are doing well are local-owned breakfast/lunch places.  Owners of a coupl of them (I'm a breakfast guy) say business is steady, cross your fingers.

One of the things about breakfast is that a great breakfast costs you about 1/3 as much as a great dinner.  Maybe that makes a difference.

We were forbidden to leave the building for a short period today as the Obama was in the neighborhood. Many were a twitter.

You get used to security and motorcades but they are far more extreme than they have ever been. I was talking to an agent while I was working out, and he said they are going for a 4 mile security radius on the "Day."

Meanwhile the food gets older because it is not getting eaten as fast. Plus, they can't afford to throw it out. I also like how the tables have more space around them.

yes, the restaurant.com works. she printed them on-line and we've used them twice.

Sidwell is good for the security people. DC ranked 51 out of 50 states and P.R. for quality of education.

Quakers are not religious. They are warm, fuzzy people that we can all love. They are "spiritual" and quaint.

yeah, look how great the drug czar has performed.

This is only going to snowball. Soon, the commercial real estate market is going to hit the fan, once the retail stores and restaurants start going out, and then things will get really interesting.

I agree with OB for sending his kids to private school. However in his position it sends the message to the public that Public schools do not meet his standards. Fly with the Eagles crash with the turkeys. Vouchers for the rest of the public would even the field a bit.

BTW, we stayed in Marina, CA (near Monterey) over the holidays and had some really cheap breakfast at Tim's (or something like that). Really nice place. If you're a NORCALer looking to take vacation, you should research.

re: Sidwell Friends

I wonder what it's like to be a teacher there during parent/teacher conferences with all the elite DC power brokers...

Teacher: Um, Mr. President, your daughter is throwing too many spitballs in class.

Obama: Yeah, so? I'm the g*ddamn president of this country. I could disappear you and nobody would ever notice. She wants to throw spitballs, let her.

Teacher: Yes sir. Now, about her grades...

The wage and benefits match the skill and education. They are victims of themselves.

Perhaps at the restaurants you frequent.

Talked with two mom and pop business's, both said last 30 days traffic is way down.

The job loss and the affect on CRE is the story in the NRA numbers.

The storm on the horizon is gathering speed. Hurricane force winds and a few F5 tornadoes are in the forecast.

Unemployment benefits are ridiculously small for the restaurant workers making $8-$12 an hour. In Oregon that translates to under $200 a week in benefits. The wait/bar staff never fully declare their tips and will be in the same boat.

The other sad part is you never really get fired from a restaurant job. The management just cuts your shifts to 1-2 and you eventually quit. Thus the unemployment insurance rate doesn't go up.

Closings reduce foot traffic causes more closings causes higher unemployment causes reduced spending causes more closings.

The cycle is obvious but still highly unpleasant to watch.

I have been to the ones with no menu and tipped accordingly. Generally the service equals the quality. Any business done properly makes money, so should the worker.

Business at our Mexican restaurant is down about 30% from last year and we are always voted "Best Mexican". OK, it's a small town, only six other Mexican joints. Business sucks, hours are being cut, pennies pinched. We expect to see a few of our competitors gone in the next year.

Is anyone else starting to realize that a large part of the economy is a Ponzi scheme? Let the masses borrower so they can buy goods they can't afford, so the sellers of those goods can in turn also buy other goods they can't afford, so all those sellers can enjoy luxuries like getting table service at their meals, so the table servers can buy things they can't afford...

The whole thing works great until it goes in reverse. Then we are left buying things we really need, like clothing, which is unfortunately not made here but by people we depend on to fuel the whole Ponzi scheme by buying our debt.

In any case, I wonder if this is finally the time this country will wake up and Legalize It. Never a better time - it would increase tax revenues, while helping placate the restless public.

Oyster Rest.here in Louisville,Ky. that had opened in 1884 and stayed in same family closed recently.Had moved about a year ago to high income area and still couldn't make it.

I agree, but... I worked with a woman who worked in the DC public schools as one of those City Year deals.  She talked about it, she showed photos.  It wasn't pretty. Yes, symbolism is important -- but frankly, not at the cost of Obama's kid's education.

Is anyone else starting to realize that a large part of the economy is a Ponzi scheme?

The cycle you depict is a normal multiplier effect. Just how an economy works. Except here, there is no longer sufficient input from wages, so yes, without borrowing everything collapses.

Is anyone else starting to realize that a large part of the economy is a Ponzi scheme?

The group was founded in 1917 as a combined effort by American members of the Religious Society of Friends and assisted civilian victims of war.

Because Quakers traditionally oppose violence in all of its forms and therefore refuse to serve in the military, the AFSC's original mission was to provide conscientious objectors (COs) to war with a constructive alternative to military service. In 1947 AFSC received the Nobel Peace Prize along with the British Friends Service Council, now called Quaker Peace and Social Witness, on behalf of all Quakers worldwide.'

Anyone who is into steaks I recommend once in your life trying Wagyu steak and if you can stretch it Kobe steak (dry aged twice as long as normal Wagyu).

I tried it once as a birthday gift a few years ago and it really was a surreal experience. Amazing taste and texture. Almost melts in your mouth.

I actually found the taste of the fattier edge parts too overwhelming, very similar to fois gras.

We'll keep fighting 'til everyone earns above average wages!

New safety rules for children's clothes have stores in a fit - Los Angeles Times

Barring a reprieve, regulations set to take effect next month could force thousands of clothing retailers and thrift stores to throw away trunkloads of children's clothing.

They'll all have to go to the landfill," said Adele Meyer, executive director of the National Assn. of Resale and Thrift Shops.

Cynthia Broockman, who owns two consignment stores and a thrift shop in Virginia, recently stopped accepting children's products for resale. That raised the ire of a man who was trying to sell his son's castoffs there and had not heard of the new rules.

I'm not knocking Costco. My wife and I have recently taken to making Walmart our retail store of choice because they seen to have the best prices int he area, and we don't want to buy in bulk. However, the meat sold in Costco is probably not USDA Prime, or anywhere near that. It's probably USDA Choice, not that there anything wrong with that. It's just not as good at the meat that you'll get at a premium steakhouse. If you've ever been to Mortons or Rosie O'Grady's, you'll know that the meals there are near perfect. My wife's a good cook, but she knows she can't match that because she doesn't have the cooking equipment nor the access to Prime Beef.

All this food talk makes me hungry for a double nothingburger with bacon and green chile.

“Any so-called stimulus program is a ruse. The government can increase its spending only by reducing private spending equivalently. Whether government finances its added spending by increasing taxes, by borrowing, or by inflating the currency, the added spending will be offset by reduced private spending. Furthermore, private spending is generally more efficient than the government spending that would replace it because people act more carefully when they spend their own money than when they spend other people's money.”

xxx[It's probably USDA Choice]

Yes, it is. And I have an upscale butcher in my village that sells Prime (stamped). So I did an experiment with Costco Choice & Prime (4x the price) prepared my way with a rub and sitting 5hrs before grilling at 500+ deg both sides 2min & then way low for a few more min until a little firm to the press test.

Barely notice a difference...

Terminate the Terminator. You couldn't make up something like that.

The keys to an excellent beef or bison steak.
(1) Animal must have superior fodder and be grain finished. Preferably not corn.
(2) Animal must be quickly killed and bled. Fear and duress introduce hormones and chemicals that diminish flavour. Slaughter and butcher speedily.
(3) Dry aging must be observed.

Pay attention to #2 as you're loaded into the market cattle cars.

Little known fact is the restaurant meat suppliers will sell wholesale to anyone. The downside is you have to buy in bulk. Generally 10lbs and over and you have to do the cutdown yourself.

Hang them 21 days in cooler.

Funny nobody told me and many others I was entitle to anything but the chance to prove my stuff. I blame lazy minds and butts. Most happen to be labor. Making money is not a right of entitlement for the rich. Lots of rich lose it because they can not even manage it. No different then the poor who pissed away their chance at the big prize. I don't care if you make low wages as long as you are happy and don't expect what others have worked for. That is freedom. I don't owe anyone a free ride for lack of personal discipline or effort. You don't even have a right to a job. You earn the job. Maybe if the company goes belly up you may have had something to do with it. Time for a bit of self examination. I made (as many others have) my way in a labor intensive business. No fancy office. I had a blast!

You can't even buy the quality of meet that these guys can unless you have a "real" butcher shop in you neighborhood.

Quality is available to anybody who bothers to look for it.

Stock losses leave pensions underfunded by $400 billion

By David S. Hilzenrath
10:18 AM PST, January 7, 2009
WASHINGTON -- The collapse of the stock market last year left corporate pension plans at the largest companies underfunded by $409 billion, reversing a $60 billion pension surplus at the end of 2007, according to a study released today. Shoring up the plans could cause further pain for workers, businesses and the struggling economy at a time when they can least afford it, pension specialists said.

"The chaos that has been observed in the world's financial markets over the last 12 months has had a major adverse impact on pension plan funding and will negatively impact corporate earnings," the Mercer consulting firm reported Wednesday. "Moreover, the trend in recent months has been one of alarming deterioration," Mercer said.

I like The Capital Grill. My wife is from Argentina and it's the only steakhouse she'll go to in the US.

Hey I'm back on line again. Where to start?

Miami-Dade County passed an ordinance, effective already which sez that once the Lis Pendens is filed (beginning of judicial foreclosure), a form has to be filled out and given to counties authorities, who will then inspect and see if property taken care of. Not such a bad idea, unless the property is still occupied by hostile people.

Much much weirder:

Another ordinance also already effective, requires that after the lender takes title, they are supposed to notify the county, have an inspection, see if it complies with code, and have an estimate of how much money it will take to bring it to code compliance, to be given to a prospective buyer. It appears to be unclear whether that is current code, or the code that was in effect when the certificate of occupancy/completion was ussued umpteen years ago. Any older house in the north part of the county, undestroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 92 WILL NOT BE to code, unless it was just built. Normally you are grandfathered in as of the date the building got approved, unless it is more than 50% destroyed by a disaster.

Bringing something to code will cost 10s of thousands of dollars if not a lot more.

I imagine the true purpose is to make foreclosures even harder.

At least one foreclosure mill law firm is unaware of this, and I just found out.

The latter ordinance may be adopted state wide.

If the porn industry goes down, it could take the internet with it Wink

Isnt "going down" a big part of what the porn industry is all about?

Too many discussions about Czars lately...
Anyway, my favorite restaurant will be closing here in Dallas, TX. I've always liked the way they "czarred" my steaks. Just sad...

ot sure about the wine but it's bound to be inexpensive. The Bollinger Special Cuvee I snagged last month was $21 (yes really!) a bottle, I cleaned them out.

Now if only Opus One would get with the program >; )

Ot-
credit applications for auto financing in first 7 days of month are trending up and stay on current pace double last 2 monthly periods..

approvals?

Are you saying that $21.00 is inexpensive?

Lama, any recommendations for local steakhouse in Buenos Aires to try?

OT but...

Tricia Nixon Cox, the President's daughter, is seven days older than I am. She was between the ages of 6 and 12 when her dad was Vice President. She and her sister probably went to Sidwell Friends during some of that time.

for that bottle, yes. If 21 a bottle is disturbing for a full bottle of champagne, don't even glance at Opus One.

My two sins, french made high heels and really good wine - some things I won't give up. Sadly Barneys isn't discounting Louboutins.... yet rubs her hands together with glee

Geesh, I thought I was ot.

My mom had the most deliciously divine rump roast frozen that we ate in Balto before flying down here.

No one wants to talk mtges?

Has anyone ever been to this restaurant in Mumbai?

Here is a thought on the gas being shut down in Europe. Gas delivery systems need to be constantly pressurized. If the pressure drops, the pilot light goes out, and then the gas line is pressurized then won't it continue to fill the space causing a potential hazard?
Citizen Jacked

No hazard there. If you blow out your pilot light the flow of gas will stop. There has to be a hot flame present for the gas to flow-it's a safety device. That's why when you light your furnace you have to hold down the button for awhile after the pilot is lit, otherwise it will go out.

We need a steak Czar !

"Chef Jerry Trice, who now works his culinary magic at Sam's Waterfront Cafe in Annapolis, was heavily influenced by his mother's gutsy cooking..."

Well, it's fine to have a varied menu, but whenever I get down to the Northern Neck (VA) I always go for broiled rockfish or crabcakes or fried oysters or softshells or shad/shad roe (in March). I never get tired of the stuff, and would not think of ordering barbecue or what have you in the midst of all this plenty. (If you go to where Bevans supplies the oysters, they're likely to be very local.)

I do but it's been weird in here today. Don't mention private schools or Quakers.

Comrade V,
I'll ask her and post an answer later on this thread. I'm guessing there are dozens that are amazing. Argentina is also a bargain.

Used to go to Harris Ranch outside Coalinga, CA in the 80's to pick up 10-15 lb fillets. It was well worth the "green gas" to get there. Anyone know if the place is still around?
