Surprised?

Out of SSO now.  Fur suit back on.

Does the BLS still count each Mexican as 3/5 of a worker?

my brain hurts..

Total American Unemployment or ~Mexican~ unemployment?

"Out of SSO now. Fur suit back on."

Too much information.

Looks like the Know Nothings are out in force.

Maybe the slogan "Inland Empire" needs to renamed.

Seems like the Inland Empire and San Diego actually still have a ways down to go in construction employment

The numbers are even worse in a several of the Florida markets; we track supersector growth / losses by city, and Naples / Cape Coral have had their construction employment drop by almost 20% (6-month rolling average). Ouch.

Voting against the bailout was 'unamerican'....the michigan governator.
Isn't voting 'unamerican'?....

1:30PM selloff starting early today.  Someone is anticipating forced selling.  Wonder if they're right.

Are workers that "construct" burgers, burritos, buckets of chikin inc.?

could we see the sales trends of IE roach coaches on that graph, please?

Anyone know of any advanced charting add-ons for excel?

Which don't suck?

And do 3D charting, maybe even 4D?

Who buys all those pickup trucks that make so much money for the US makers? Construction workers, of course. Construction goes down, US automakers go away. Elementary.

He's rolling over and cutting a deal, would be my guess.

I am surprised these numbers haven't fallen further. I've heard the explanations that illegals and temps were a decent chunk of construction workers, so maybe the peak was higher in CA. There are also people still working, just far fewer hours. Some people are working on nonresidential. However, a 20% drop in construction employment in the IE just doesn't sound right. Seems like it should be well over a 40% drop.

Well, them and Marines, suburban men of all stripes, farmers, rednecks with money, and people who just like trucks.

Why would the Chief of Staff resign, but not the governor?

Do you know how much the governor's seat is worth? You don't just walk away from that without something in return.

I went to school in the IE, and let me be the first to say, it is GHETTO. Glad I'm back in Costa Mesa where people are still somewhat civil.

Ag also. Lots of ag. A few months back someone posted here that his buddy's dealership (some U.S. carmaker) up in Merced County (CA) was still doing a good business in trucks to ag -- if nothing else.

I'm on the side of the taxpayer, because that is what I am. Thank God the Republicans in Congress finally found the guts to stop handing out money like it's water. I understand they voted against the bank bailout too, but at least this time it worked.

401Ks are problematic, I agree. But if you get a match that's vested it's not bad. I get 100% match that's vested right away so I put in the max up to that limit. I'd rather take it after tax and manage it myself.

Most matches aren't vested since you usually have to wait 5 years. The problem is that you're deferring taxes to some future unknown rate. Future rates will be higher, and you can't plan.

Probably a good time to convert to a Roth.

Looks like it's time for the 2 PM pump.

You're an idiot. Most 401(k)s come with a company match. Free money for those not so braindead to understand that a 401(k) does not equal equity investing. Go ahead and cancel your 401(k) contribution forever. I'll be glad however take my free 25% company match for doing nothing but contributing to a money market fund.

I thought the American people were promised almost even return or possibly a profit on the $700 billion for finance.

I don't think GM is promising anything similar.

LOL...thanks for the laugh!!!

The infrastructure stimulus wants to re-employ construction workers but I have not seen anyone else mention this perennial big problem with "public works" projects (added to my 12/6/08 article):

"Obama might be giving away your tax dollars to support drug-trafficking, prostitution, and human trafficking because of mob/mafia ties to construction. "Organized crime controls 75 percent of the construction industry in New York City through its control over the concrete industry and construction unions, an admitted mob captain told Senators [in 1988]." "New York Public Works Projects Saddled with ‘Mob Tax’." FBI investigations implicate the Gambino crime family in a 21st Century I-95 interstate highway construction project."

Has anyone in the MSM mentioned this problem with crash spending on public works?

On topic... I wonder if those figures represent full time, employed construction workers or also include underemployed or unemployed?

I can't get to CR.

I would watch money markets as Hank has only guaranteed them thru December.
A lot of the money market funds are taking TARP money so they are also likely to collapse just like the stock market. Dont say I didn't warn you

I think this is true, most 401Ks offer pretty limited choices. Still well worth it if you get vested matching, IMO.

Well worth it when the Wall Street banks eliminate your job and ship it overseas.

Where do you think the money came from

How about NEITHER! What ever happened to personal responsibility? It is not government's function to decide who wins and who loses. The FedGov is not our MOMMY! If (fill in blank) can't hack it - survival for the rest of the herd dictates a culling. If there is a need it will be filled by resourceful people and responsive firms. If there isn't - oh well. End of game.

Right on solidarity 401k is a joke, thankfully I told my parent to pull their 403b when they retired 6 months ago, even though they hesitated.

Today they cannot thank me enough I saved them thousands of dollars in losses that the wall street dush bags would have sucked dry.

Many dog owners taste just a wee bit of their pet's food just to see what the pet is getting. It's extremely bland. I don't think it would make you ill, though.

If people lived in a world that was reasonably well under their control, it would be fine. It doesn't work that way anymore.

I read a biography of Daniel Boone a while ago. He was a great woodsman, guide and settlement founder. But when he went into business as a tavern keeper, merchant and surveyor, he went bust at everything he tried and ended up begging for a government pension - a hand-out.

It goes back a long way.

OT- Report from the field.
Re: Currencies.
Recieved a newsletter from my main supplier via snail mail today. One item read: "Although (the manufacturer)(UK) has sent their 2009 price increases, the gain in value of the USD has been significant enough to permit substantial reductions in malt extract pricing for'09, as long as the current strength of the dollar holds. All are being reduced by 15-20%!" I guess the question is: Will it last?

ORPHAN RACE

Orphan race, cold rain descends
Will your folly never end?
What downpour of the sky erase
The long disgrace?
And yet if you would seasoned be
Walk out among the winter trees,
There is endurance in that wood,
Though dead at heart a livelihood
That green will earn
Though some may burn

And then if sodden to the skin
There is a rind that holds within
A living soul
That never winter stole

For if the sap draws to the root
By equinox to force a shoot
The life will raise
A house in leaf to praise,
Cold rain become
Encomium
