A year or so back the poster sK (signed off as "K", where did he ever go anyway?) noted that he expected soon to see matchstick people wandering around in a bleak L.S. Lowry landscape in the UK. My Christmas eve:
\tArrived up at my cabin yesterday, terrible drive, very cold and icy, got the cabin toasty then had a rest before todays duties. Today I pulled my snowblower off the truck, went down to the lake and cleared off A nice sized skating area. Took my shovel and scraped it down to the ice. Drilled a hole with my ice auger, fired up my water pump and flooded my rink. Had lunch then hauled a cord of pine down to the fire pit beside my skating rink. Then fired up the pump again and gave my rink another flood for that nice smooth finish. Not bad for an old man in -20c weather, good thing it warmed today! The children arrived with the grandchildren and we had a nice t-bone dinner. Then it was time to mosey down to the lake, get a huge bonfire going and spend the night skating under the stars and sitting around the fire. The only thing more beautiful than -25c, clear skies filled with stars would have been a good northern light show. Oh well you can't have it all. Well have to get my rest, tomorrow is the traditional 25km snowmobile ride. Hope to see lots of wildlife then end up back at the cabin for the big turkey dinner. Thank the lord for the four beautiful seasons that I have enjoyed all my life.
Seasons greetings to all at CR, hope you are all in good health and are with friends and family for the seaso

Anak - have enjoyed yours too. I also thought CITIC burning a couple of bil on AUD trade would have some impact, which is partly why Ive been posting incredulous numbers ever since on Hang Seng.
Your info about protests is gold- pse continue.
I have kids too. We're hoping for some snow over the next 7 days. May well get it.
Best regards - and here's some rocknroll for the season, and the decline of the market:
That we might be redeemed FROM our sins, not IN our sins...
That we might have eternal life through redemption and resurrection...
That we might partake of reward and punishment according to the intents of our hearts and deeds of our lives...
That we may obtain mercy through forgiveness.
That by being humbled and made good through obedience, we might make better spouses, parents, neighbors, and citizens.
Will have the laptop on at DILs for U$D/JPY FX trading from 1pm pst tomorrow 12/25 to 2pm pst Friday 12/26, and to watch for overseas events, while family and friends continue to regard financial events as a curiosity, even with jobs now at stake and home values approaching half of loan amounts.
Hey, Canadian watching with Popcorn - fabulous post. Do you have a place in the woods? My folks used to live in Hudson just outtta Montreal, so we we were amazed at the guys on the lake getting their Oldsmobiles out and towing shacks to the middle of the river to fish for piss ass perch, good for nothing but liquid stock.
Seemed like an equivalent to test cricket in the UK - days on end where nothing happens. Brit zen.

Last, but with a slight tear, I really hope Tanta's family can get through the day. She had such a huge impact on so many people that you should be forever grateful that you personally got to know her. My heart goes out to you because I know how tough the holidays can be, especially the first time around.
Meanwhile, the days ARE getting longer. It's time to celebrate.
Hmm...a day without Schaedenfreude...whatever will I do? Meh...I'm making dinner (a date of sorts) with a Croatian - raised Communist she says, so why not a date on Christmas day?
A wonderful, merry Holiday to all my fellow travelers on CR - it's an honor to share your company...I'm lifting a glass of cheer to all of you.
dryfly, I think the extended resurfacing may have to do with the fact that it is about 36 degrees F! Needs to be a tad colder for good ice, maybe. Doc at the Radar Station | 12.24.08 - 10:27 pm | #
I believe they refrigerate like for indoor ice - so if 36 deg F they should get great ice [w/ refrigeration]... my guess is the sheer number of people using it and small size of the rink - makes it tough to get the ice smooth on one pass.
But really don't know - looks like a totally good time though. We have outdoor rinks all around us and used to skate a lot when the kids were younger. My boys both played youth hockey and lived on the rink.
back then, and assume now, you buy a ticket and skate away!

Never had the opportunity to ice skate. Watched a couple of hockey games. Fell into a farm pond once when I had to break the ice so cows could get a drink. Good thing I was right at the bank and could crawl out!
Notice that they are skating counter clockwise. As if they are trying to turn back the clock to a year ago or more...Wouldn't touch NY real estate for at least 10 years.

JibJab 2008 Year in Review
It must be December - snow is falling, children are writing letters to Santa and we're dragging 2008 through the mud in our all-singing, all-dancing, all-out year-in-review. Merry Xmas to all- I continue to learn from many here, and contribute as I can. The thanks are too many to mention. It was a satisfying, if scary year. I hope next year is less satisfying... and suprises to the upside.
Skated at Rockefeller Center a few times when I was a child & visiting my grandparents, who lived on W.72nd St. Usually go back to the city once a year--recharge on all the intensity.
And I've just finished with the Christmas eve services and the final wrapping of the presents.
The turkey went into the oven two hours ago at a lower temperature so that we can have a brunch after the kids are through the gifts.
This is the one Christmas that I'll remember as the holiday in which the now maturing kids kicked to help the old man practice for a tough choir piece, sing pick-up carols for their grandmother's cell phone voice recorder - in astounding harmony - and the inlaws stayed in the now-completed basement. And we managed to figure out harmony for this particular piece...
And I actually wondered tonight, how to pray for those whom I've never met and nothing more to go on than a pseudonym. Regardless, I think that what was rendered will work.
Thanks to everyone who posts here and has offered snark, commentary and lucid analysis.
And thank you, CR, for hosting this interesting experience...
Happy Cristmahanukwanza, all y'all. I challenge anyone to find a site where you learn more than CR. I'm very, very thankful for the opportunity.
And remember this: CR will never be able to put up a post titled, "Enjoyment of One's Family - Cliff Diving." Or, "Time Spent With a Cocktail and Cigar Underwater." The gravy in all this might not moisten the horse meat and rotten potatoes, but it's still gravy.
Central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan was quoted by the South China Morning Post as saying: "The US dollar is unlikely to be stable next year and later.
"And the likelihood of the United States issuing more money in the near future adds to the depreciation risk in US-dollar-denominated assets and trade settlements."
It was a dark and stormy night. I'd driven out into the snow storm but returned early. I stood at the door listening to the quiet roar of wind through trees, like a distant waterfall.
The market was complacent, seemingly satisfied by the November collapse. Then a door opened, betrayed only by a single squeak -

The retail industry could be looking at its biggest contraction in 35 years, according to Burt P. Flickinger, III, managing director of consulting firm Strategic Resource Group. He estimates that 160,000 stores will have closed in 2008 and predicts that an additional 200,000 will shutter next year. In March and April of 2009, Flickinger expects 2,000 to 3,000 malls to shutter.

All other data support the fact that prices in California, as a whole, are down more than 40% from the peak prices. In 90% of the zip codes, prices are down between 20-65% from the peak. We are headed for 50-80% decline from the peak in 95% of the zip codes by 2010.
Going forward, the worst hit zip codes are likely to be the high-priced zip codes in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties and some in L.A. Area. 2009 would be the year when these areas catch up with the rest of CA and in 2010 they would the leaders.

The Age of Propaganda replaced the Age of Reason in the West some time after the WW I. We are dealing with mucho macho dopes among the "educated" in America and most of the world that has copied America. History shows us where this road leads todisaster.
pooki, it's probably true that many of us would rather go to a "Party" full of CR alumni, than meet with relatives or hang out at some public New Year's gathering full of strangers.
I think Housing Bubble blog or HousingPanic actually did some kind of meetup once. Maybe we should schedule one for the middle of 2009. Perhaps that will be the signpost of when the "bottom" is in... all the CR nerds coming out of the shadows, into the open air...
"Thus, notions of normality and abnormality may not be quite as accurate as people believe they are"
" how many patients might be sane outside the psychiatric hospital but seem insane in it not because craziness resides in them, as it were, but because they are responding to a bizarre setting"
Do I live in a sane society? Are the realtors & brokers who promoted the housing bubble sane?
Are the Wall Street traders who built up $600 trillion in derivatives sane?

I really want to see the numbers on this beauty, if this thing sold, then we're a long way from the bottom, if it didn't then we're still a long way from the bottom.

Tsk, tsk, old nerds. I remember playing "Star Trek" by sneaking into Bonner Hall @ UCSD, silly little grid of asterisks and vector based photon torpedos.
It strikes me that the Corporations are our new kings. With the latest few trillions "bailed out" to them, with the taxpayers on the hook including future generations, we commoners are as financially as far down from the multi-national corps as a peasant was from King Louis the 16th.
Actually farther, but who's counting? One explanation may be that a "billion" or "trillion" dollars is outside my wise countrymen's imagination. To most it's like, a lot of 1000's or something, right?
Thank you for our new Conservative era, those who supported the insanity. We are now going back to the old days, and most have no more conception of the "Old Days" than they do a trillion dollars.
Just my holiday thoughts. Thank you again, Conservatives, it has been quite a ride.

That's a great article from 1973 on bogus psychiatric labeling. Those pseudopatients had guts. After "Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) they might hace had second thoughts. Before Economics I considered Psychology for an undergraduate major. The pseudoscience was much worse. They try to prove genetic bases for schizophrenia with statistics, when they don't even start with an agreed upon definition of the condition, which can not be objectively diagnosed. Throw the scientific method out the window, like the water fountain in the film...

God bless us everyone.
Brit zen.

Strangest resurfacing I have ever seen - they did like a star pattern prior to the circling the boards. Odd.
Canadian with Popcorn - I very much doubt that you have failed. At the very least you have shared your experiences and posted some seriously quality stuff, which is all a public good.
You don't get a dollar or a loonie out of it true, but your contribution is of wisdom, and a sharing from men, to men. I don't mean to be genderist but it works.

I can honestly say that, after a couple years here, I haven't envied any of the bigwigs that post here on occasion, but I just felt a twang of envy reading your comment. What a life and it seems that you're aware enough to realize just how fortunate you are. Props to you for that.
Counterpointer, thanks for the music as I covered the posts.
Anak, your daughter seems to have her head on straight.
To all the other commenters, I do try to read all the posts I can, even if I don't reply. I hope you've all gained from being a part of this virtual community and that these days to come are good to you and yours.
CR, enjoy the holidays and stop posting for a while. Take a break, man. "Smile, mon, be happy (with or without ganga). Leave the live feed up for a few days. The world will just keep on turnin'.
Oh, and I realize CSC may not be out there, so I am CSC to celebrate his(?) wit.
dryfly, I think the extended resurfacing may have to do with the fact that it is about 36 degrees F! Needs to be a tad colder for good ice, maybe.
Best to all, Lothar the Rottweiler.
This place is amazing.
Oh, and in inclement driving conditions, a nice Subie is always a good choice.
Happy Holidays everyone and thanks for the fishing lessons!

Never had the opportunity to ice skate. Watched a couple of hockey games. Fell into a farm pond once when I had to break the ice so cows could get a drink. Good thing I was right at the bank and could crawl out!
Thanks to NORAD, my 3 y/o was able to track Santa and we watched A Christmas Story. Can't think of a better way to spend Chistmas Eve.

Happy holidays to all. Just got back from a get together with the neighbors and a grand posole smorgasbord. Yum. Grandkids coming tomorrow. I sure am grateful to be living in southwest New Mexico. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else at this point. Have fond memories of living in snow country, but that was then.

I've had a great roll here on CR since last July. Learned a lot. Had I had some of this info in my brain say 8 years ago I would not have left so much tech profit on the table - sigh - , hell, I was a bond guy, what did I know about stinkin' equities?
my thanks to Rob Dawg, nullpointer, Counterpointer, EvilHenry(now AWOL), and his Mom, MrM, mp, rich, Anonymous, lawyerliz, of course CR, and the greatly missed Tanta and finally the irrepressible Jas...

China has said it is to allow some trade with its neighbours to be settled with its currency, the yuan.
It has begun...

Calif. (SFH) Median Resale\t\t$285,680 ---- \t$594,530 --- \t\t51.95%
At list part of the decline is due to mix of homes being sold now versus before the Crisis.
Area. 2009 would be the year when these areas catch up with the rest of CA and in 2010 they would the leaders.

well, it didn't take long for some of us to tire of social interaction
back to the safety and solitude (one and the same?) of the series of tubes
pooki, it's probably true that many of us would rather go to a "Party" full of CR alumni, than meet with relatives or hang out at some public New Year's gathering full of strangers.

On Being Sane In Insane Places
"Thus, notions of normality and abnormality may not be quite as accurate as people believe they are"
" how many patients might be sane outside the psychiatric hospital but seem insane in it not because craziness resides in them, as it were, but because they are responding to a bizarre setting"
Do I live in a sane society? Are the realtors & brokers who promoted the housing bubble sane?
Are the Wall Street traders who built up $600 trillion in derivatives sane?
I think not.
But they are "normal".

Conjure thinks December PCE will surprise to the downside.
Just saying.
