I wonder what happens if you offer to pay cash - two for one?

Probably they also represent consumers who don't use a lot of credit too?

A high credit score doesn't mean you don't need a loan. I know some really poor people with an 800 score.

So, I think this means that they will only lend to one head of their dog. What a dog.

There is no way that 58% of consumers have a 700+ FICO.

I mean, have you been to the mall lately?

So the banks get 250 bil from the taxpayers, but where is the accountability. UK plan that stupid paulson (whose TARP is essentially overridden)had to copy, did not even ask the top bankers to resign (as in UK). But then again, paulson belongs to the same group of animals.

And i am dreaming of future FED charges that would put criminal bankers in jail sooner rather than later. But i hope those days will come.

Uncle Kenny, of course, that is why I said it "reminded me". If they required that the buyer keep the loan amount in an escrow account - well, then we know we've gone too far!

Best Wishes.

DP, I completely agree. From what I see, most are below 700, some far below.

FICO has been rejiggered like the SAT... everyone gets 1500, like most people get 700...

CRAs are evil though... can we get rid of them now? I can't even fix my credit report... although I suppose the good thing about a broken one is that no one can use my credit either...

When we took our loan out with GMAC,in 2000, we were told they would not sell our loan. Since then, thanks this blog, we sold and are happy renters. I guess their lending practices have changed.

Thank goodness we don't need a new car.

At least, not yet.

So, what say you about tomorrow?

Upsy, daisy, or down-U-go?

I said this in the 1970s and still think it pretty much every day.

THE STOCK MARKET IS A CRAPSHOOT!

However, I am really enjoying following Dr. Krugman's blog.

Technically you said "this remains me," CR, but you're allowed a few typos here and there. Unless you were making some kind of existential point...

They are now restricting financing to borrowers who can afford to pay the loans back, what a novel idea.

In some crazy alternate reality this could be seen as a good thing. How will J6P roll over the neg equity in his suburban into a new Escalade now? The credit crunch hits main street...

You know FICO scores are overrated when you can pay a company $50 to inflate yours.

Oh, by the way, we own a 1997 Mercury Sable (paid off) and a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse (paid off).

The Lincoln Mercury dealership went out of business last month. They had built one of the most beautiful buildings with a large customer service area and Internet access. We had our 90,000 mile service there this summer.

I think the Ford dealership will take care of our used Mercury, and the Mitsu people are still solvent.

GMAC is still servicing our 5% 15 year mortgage from 03.

For autos, once prices stablize and gas stays around $3 or lower, auto loans will be profitable again.

It may be good to be a REPO man.

So what is GMAC's down payment requirement? 10% 20%? Is GMAC going to have anyone to lend to? And who would buy at these prices anyway?

Cerberus squeezing GM to lower GM's value to force Stockholm syndrome?

Riding around suburban Portland is very depressing these days.

Wickes is gone. (Furniture store)
Levitz is gone. (another furniture)
CompUSA is gone. (computer store, OK)
Jewelry business in the Washington Square mall had signs all over -- 60% off and going out of business.
Macy's is still going, but I was in their furniture store (offsite from main store) trying to price out bedding. There were two people on the whole floor. The parking lot was empty. The condo market is squelched with enough backlog for five more years.

I don't know, folks, but what I'm seeing is a BIG BAD BEAR MARKET.

Know what was busy? The Salvation Army boutique store in Tigard, Oregon. Also, the Union Gospel Mission thrift store. There must have been fifty people in there.

I bought a beautiful cranberry colored suede cloth dress with jacket for $10.00. It had its original tags on -- $89.00 listed. The brand is SAG HARBOR.

I donated a bunch of jewelry making stuff and a man about my age grabbed it all up. He has a daughter who likes to fiddle with jewelry. Bravo!

Trash to treasures in this economy!

Peace, love and happiness,

CR, reminds me of another old saying: "A banker will lend you an umbrella on a sunny day and ask for it back when it starts to rain."

Not lending to deadbeats is good for taxpayers since we will end up buying all the bad auto loans.

I have a work colleague whose husband works as a salesman at a suffering Chevrolet dealership in northern Virginia. Recently, her husband was told to stay at the managers desk while the managers huddled in a back room for a meeting.

When they emerged, they told the salesmen that GMAC will only give loans to people with 700+ credit scores.

Her husband is convinced that virtually all sales will dry up now that GMAC did this, because virtually everyone who walked into the dealership with less than a 700 FICO score got a GMAC loan. Almost everyone with a 700+ score would get a loan from another source because they could get a better rate elsewhere, and these people were probably less than 20% of all buyers at the dealership. And lately, the dealership was hardly selling any cars anyway.

Re: hat tip Justin??

I posted that a long time ago... you dudes are behind the curve, so, like pay attention!

The REPO business is great. There has been a lag owing to a longer 'grace' period that finance companies are allowing.

It will pick up quite nicely in the coming months.

They will want the vehicles back quickly. You can trash a truck quicker than a house.

Just trying to make things as bad as possible for a bailout. If those jackasses would have only stayed at one head, things probably would have worked out better. My understanding is that head #1 and head #2 are constantly bickering, so they cannot make decisions. And #3 is just a dumbass, stoner who gets in the way.

Man, the Big Three can't catch a break, not that I feel too sorry for them. I would imagine the typical GM buyer is a worse credit risk than the typical Toyota buyer, for instance.

Is there any trend going in their favor? Oh yes, they can more easily lobby congress and the admin than the non-domestics...

Hi GM,

Mr. Fico 780 here.

There is no way in hell I will be touching your cars now or anytime in my life.

We Fico 700+ folks don't get that way by buying GM cars.

Good luck with that.

Hopefully, Cerebus is a dead three headed dog, with a gunshot in each head. After what they did to the original Albertson's grocery store, with Larry Johnston (from GE) in charge who got his golden parachute with Cerebus helping him all the way.

Ok, I used anon, but here:

The company said it expects the restrictions to remain in place until credit markets stabilize.

GMAC also said it has increased the rate it charges car dealers for providing standard auto financing by 75 basis points.

Fed's Yellen says U.S. appears to be in recession

The U.S. economy "appears to be in a recession" as the financial market crisis bites deeply, San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President Janet Yellen said on Tuesday.

"The outlook for the U.S. economy has weakened noticeably, and inflationary pressures have substantially abated," Yellen said in a speech to the Financial Executives International's Silicon Valley chapter in Palo Alto, California.

"Virtually every major sector of the economy has been hit by the financial shock."

I want to ask a question about the Chinese situation discussed two threads down. The general consensus seems to be that if China stops exporting flat screens to the US, they run a serious risk of social unrest.

So why can't the Chinese government buy up all the flat screens and then bury them in a cave? It would be inflationary, sure, but keep buying trash paper from the US is also inflationary. If they have to trade flat screens for trash paper, they might as well cut out the middleman (US), no?

"Maybe it's time to see if I can get a deal on a Corvette."

I once started to play around absentmindedly with the flange on the roof of a Corvette, and it started to come off the car. It made me feel like King Kong.

"Icelandic navy shoots frozen fish."

That is a blatant lie. The Icelandic Navy shoots blanks. Or at least that is what the hookers in Amsterdam told me. And they love it.

The Pearlstein piece is nasty and great.

If the US is going to go down the crapper, which it is, we need to revise our marketing. And one thing we definitely need is a new national anthem.

Some might go emotional, very much like Pavlov's dogs, when they hear the Star Spangled Banner, but let's face it...it needs to go.

It sucks as a song, nobody can really sing it, and Joe Sixpack has never seen rockets, isn't very free, and sure-as-shit aint brave.

I propose this tune as our new anthem. It fits America better today and we could all sing parts at baseball games without sounding like a bunch of raped alley cats.

Stock, stock, stock. Portfolio took a hit today...

CSC,

That songs brings tears to my eyes. Can we can it a ballad?

Elvis had a soul, but he never liked rock and roll and he still owes Otis Blackwell a few bucks.

Nothing would be more unifying than 80,000 people with their hats over their hearts repeating, "In the ghetto......" and then getting back to their circus. We need a new air of honesty in America.

This is where we start.

Spell check?????

This remains me of the old saying (that is true during a credit crunch): Bankers only lend money to people who don't need it.

Change the word remains!

"Things changed for Otis Blackwell on Christmas Eve, 1955. That night he sold six songs that he had written for a total of $150. One of the demos included in these six had been recorded with Otis playing piano and the drummer using a cardboard box. It was picked up by Elvis Presley, who did not write his own songs and whose style at the time was to pick songs that he liked from demos that he heard and then use the same arrangement that he had heard on the demo. The song was Don't Be Cruel, which went to number one in 1956, as did another Presley song the following year that had been written by Otis, All Shook Up. It had been inspired a shaken bottle of Pepsi Cola.

The success of Don't Be Cruel gave a jolt to the songwriting career of the talented Otis Blackwell. He wrote more songs for Presley, among them One Broken Heart For Sale and Return To Sender."

In the new air of honesty, credit is given where credit is due.

Early night. Gotta wake up and feed the chickens, then harvest the wheat. Good night now.

Saw Otis perform his own songs ("fever" is his) in the 70's. I liked his versions better: a little raunchier, and stronger beat.

But if Elvis shaking his hips scared the crap out of everyone a black guy from Brooklyn would have been a problem.

How could this be seen as a bad thing??? Have sane lending standards been out of fashion so long that we no longer recognize them?

Am I old fashioned for planning to put 20% down on a conforming loan?

if you tighten credit too much the wheels don't turn. too little and the wheels fall off the phukin wagon. i think it's ok to tighten them a little but don't tighten too much or you won't sell a goddamn thing

People are sheep. Once the prevailing social trend turns towards frugality they will be clustered around the water cooler going baa baa about their 10 year old car and how they are saving money by eating pasta and hamburger at home.

What was recently sneered at will now be applauded. Frugality, of course, is actually good for the country in the long run but it plays holy hell with our current debt driven consumption focused society in the short run.

Meraxos predicts a prolonged bitter recession followed by a period of intense class warfare when the rich and powerful try to tell the young "no good jobs for you" and tell the old "no good retirement for you".

f*ck no!!!!!

At Eastern Motors, your job's your credit.

Interesting comments about Cerberus. Would you invest in their batting lineup? John Snow - what did he ever accomplish at CSX and Treasury?; Rumsfeld & Quayle - couldn't they get David Stockman or Mark Foley too?; a bunch of over-hyped GE guys - the bloom is way off the Jack Welch rose. If Nardelli got $360 million to screw up Home Depot, how much does he get for Chrysler? Will they still have friends in the next administration?

"Interesting times" - good comments all. My own observations about people with over 700 credit scores not buying GM coincide with yours. Everybody I know at work buys Japanese, keeps it for 10 years, and gets a new car with either cash or a very hefty down payment.

That is my idea for the US gov't buying up the foreclosed homes (at foreclosed market rates) and bulldozing them.

Why not just give them to the homeless veterens? Having people who risked their lives for this country living under bridges is a national disgrace. Would seem to solve 2 problems. Its not like most of these guys are in the market for houses as it is.

...but then again, i would never buy a GM vehicle in the first place.
