At present, reserve requirements apply only to "transactions deposits" – essentially checking accounts. The vast majority of funding sources used by private banks to create loans are not limited by bank reserves. Most commercial and industrial loans are financed by issuing large denomination CDs. Money market deposits are largely used to lend to corporations who issue commercial paper. Consumer loans are also made using savings deposits, which are not subject to reserve requirements. These loans can be bunched into securities and sold to somebody else, taking them off of the bank's books.

Therefore, neither commercial nor consumer loans are any longer limited by bank reserves. Since 1995 the amount of consumer loans has steadily increased, while bank reserves have generally remained constant:

A few months ago we introduced a website to the Internet - Stock Research Portal - Focus On Mining, Oil Gas Market Data For Investors, Advisors.
Analyze, Monitor, Compare Canadian Resource Companies, Income Trusts on TSX, Venture
Financial Exchanges in Canada.
The website is focused on research into Mining and Oil & Gas stocks - for now restricted to those listed for trading on the Toronto and Toronto Venture stock exchanges (about 1,600 companies). One month ago we introduced a complimentary blog to the Internet - http://www.stockresearchportalblog.com

In the past few weeks I have been scouring the Internet for blogs I consider complimentary to add to our blog's Blogroll. To date I have reviewed well over 350 blogs, and have selected only 11 that I have decided to include. 'Calculated Risk' is one of them.

Today I put a Post on our blog introducing 'Calculated Risk' and six others to our Blogroll. If you have an interest in doing so, you can visit our blog and read that post.

Congratulations to those behind 'Calculated Risk'. In my view you do good work.

Ain't fictional banking the best?

Just goes to show that we will never suffer from that evil of deflation again in our lifetimes under this system.

Ah well, I am going to enjoy my weekend.

Someday this war's gonna end...

Enjoy the BBQ, it may be a dying practice. The grain prices and fuel prices and envriowackos are about to "slaughter" meat prices.

How about the GM request for a bailout? It just goes to show... Republicans - whether Wall Street bankers or corporate executives - are all about the free market until they screw up. Then they all want to be saved from their stupidity. Hypocrites! Smile

My how times have changed… NY Times March 24, 2005

"When you hit a rough spot, you have to decide where the real priorities are," said Robert A. Lutz, G.M.'s vice chairman, adding that the S.U.V.'s were "where the company makes, frankly, high margins." Mr. Lutz dismissed concerns that volatile gas prices would mean that large S.U.V.'s may not be the savior they have been in the past. "Everybody thinks high gas prices hurt sport utility sales. In fact they don't," he said, adding that buyers of big S.U.V.'s like the Suburban, GMC Denali and Cadillac Escalade were well-off enough to be insulated from rising gas prices.

"Rich people don't care," he said.

And from NY Times April 13, 2006

Few G.M. skeptics were spared. Mr. Lutz took issue with a statement by President Bush earlier this year that G.M. "needs to develop a product that's relevant." Responded Mr. Lutz: "I'm a lifelong Republican, by the way. But next time around, Hillary, here I come. I'm a protest vote."

Then yesterday,

JOLIET, Ill. — A top General Motors executive said Thursday that automakers were “deserving” of as much as $50 billion in government-backed loans so that they can build more fuel-efficient cars. G.M.’s vice chairman, Robert A. Lutz, said the car companies need money to retool their plants but probably cannot raise enough capital on their own because of the tight credit markets. He said the automakers have already made considerable progress in transforming themselves and that the government should help them proceed faster. “The American auto industry is deserving of government loan guarantees,” Mr. Lutz told reporters at an event near Chicago where G.M. showed off its 2009 lineup. “We have done a whole bunch of things that people said, ‘Why aren’t you doing this?’ ”
Carmakers Deserve Federal Loan Guarantees Up to $50 Billion, G.M. Official Says - NY Times

This is the sad history of GM - mismanaged for years.

What does an accountant do for fun? How many strokes does it take for an accountant to reach nirvana?

Despite legal troubles, Kent has no plans to leave bench
Federal judge will hear cases while he's facing sex abuse charges
By LISE OLSEN Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle
"U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent intends to remain on the bench and hear court cases even as he faces prosecution on charges he sexually abused a former employee, according to U.S. District Judge Hayden Head Jr., chief judge for the Southern District of Texas.
Kent was indicted for improperly touching his former case manager under her clothing and making obscene suggestions to her in August 2003 and in March 2007. Kent was also charged with attempted aggravated sexual abuse for allegedly grabbing her head and pushing it toward his crotch, while making graphic remarks."

I rubbed cherry pie filling all over my right big toe and it's still rather painful. I'm off to Lefty's now.

The auto industry problems are making Michiganders very nervous. As a former resident of that (beautiful) state, I know how much the south-eastern region is dependent on the auto companies.

My old high school buddies, currently working for different kinds of 'car tech' corporations, are getting scared. They have kids to feed and house payments. They're holding the last high-paying jobs in their area.

I'm sure I'll visit them in the next few months and try to help out. I think Michigan is going to have a full-blown Depression while the rest of the country is in recession.

Like all the highly effective products Lefty sells the pie filling is applied internally. Jeez, putting a new coat of paint on the outside and trying to pass yourself off as healthy? What are you an investment bank?

GM and Lutz are useful idiots for TPTB. The bailout is really for LEH, MER, MS, AIG, GS, JPM etc. who are into the Big Three debt / derivatives one way or another. The Ds / unions are also useful idiots to support a bailout - if any of the Big Three go under, then there will be more of a groundswell for national healthcare, so need to head that off at the pass.

An excerpt from a local Alpharetta, GA newspaper probably suggested by the FDIC to reassure the public. It may work in GA but probably not CA.
"I want to reassure Georgians that our state's banking industry remains on solid footing, and two-thirds of banks in our state have been profitable year to date," said Gov. Sonny Perdue. "While there is concern about many of our industries given the national economic climate, Georgians should not overreact to the news of one bank closing. The Georgia Department of Banking and Finance, along with the FDIC, have worked quickly to ensure all deposit funds of the customers of this bank are protected and available through the transfer of accounts to Regions Bank."

BBQ!!! Almost forgot - need to get the brisket thawing for 'the mission' tomorrow!!

Mel,
My friend, may I ask you... did the UAW decide to use/treat the metal in cars so it they would rust out more quickly than the metal used by foreign imports? Did the UAW decide to use cheaper parts - even hinges - that clearly would not hold up to the competition ? Was it the UAW that decided to launch into SUV's after the last oil crisis?
Mel, my friend, the unions sat down one day and said, "Let's make a bargain on wages and benefits". They promised to show up every day, work {reasonably} hard, and to put the parts MANAGEMENT provided together. The UAW fulfilled their promise.
You my friend want someone to blame. The only thing the UAW did wrong is to trust people like you to honor their word.

two-thirds of banks in our state have been profitable year to date

OMG 1/3 are LOSING money.

Georgians should not overreact to the news of one bank closing.

JP,
And at least 1/3 of that two-thirds have been messing with their balance sheets for too long.

As a Democrat living in Michigan, I am ashamed of my congressional delegation. Dingell and Levin resisted CAFE increases for years because, as VP Lutz so clearly indicates, the auto makers were making tons of money of SUVs and full size pick-ups.

The mix of politics and business turns out to be toxic to Michigan.

I don't know what the future will bring, but it global warming and expensive oil are in it, IMO the auto makers and their enablers in DC will be largely to blame.

I love how commenters on this blog love to bash those government or blue collar folks making too much money. Who will buy all the crap you sell if everyone makes $20K a year?

ECB Plots Clampdown
Collateral on Loans
Propping Up Banks
Appears to Be Dicey

"The European Central Bank is considering tightening lending standards amid concerns it has become a dumping ground for troubled securities, a move that could squeeze some struggling banks. As soon as Thursday, when its governing council meets, the ECB could announce plans to toughen rules on the collateral it will accept in exchange for billions of euros in loans that have kept much of the banking sector afloat. Policy makers are worried that banks have been taking advantage of the ECB's lending facilities, in part by packaging risky mortgages into securities specifically designed to be parked as collateral with the central bank. There are also signs that lenders are setting up shop in the euro zone to obtain funding from the ECB, which offers banks easier lending terms than its counterpart in the U.K."

Since everything here is OT, you wanna know how bad off FHN is?

FHN just sold my note to Chase but the July statement showed fairly large balance in the escrow portion of the account.

It won't.

Nor will releasing oil from the SR IF the refineries go down. And it won't make a dent in supply if the major terminal in S LA goes out. SR is for fighting wars over the short term... assumes all private usage goes to near zero. That's why its called 'strategic'.

Nothing but 'price rationing' will work.

Wow. AFter reading those admissions, especially from White and the Citibank report,... those that are still debating this simply do not want to acknowledge the smoking guns. The fact that s many acknowledge deliberate, orchestrated manipulations in every other market but to preclude out of hand taking place in precious metals is nothing short than willfully dismissive or complicit. Intellectually lazy at best.

(This looks like at first glance a good D&O case for the FDIC where they seek authority to sue, granted by higher DC powers and sue the directors for millions due to breach of fiduciary duty, gross negligence, stupidity, higher duty of care and anything else they can think of. The bank violated certain strict rules and regs and was in violation of state banking laws as well. If there are any deep pockets among the board or D&O/Bond insurance expect to see a Complaint filed which will be public knowledge with the allegations for all to read. It may take the FDIC several years to get to that point given the crush of work or it may be dismissed if the suit is deemed not cost effective because of low net worth directors or lack of insurance.

I'm not trying to insult you here. You obviously understand you're playing the oil/gas equities - not the commodity. The equities absolutely do not have to follow (at least over the short run) a spike in the commodity.

Mr. Market is crazy (although certain TA training/tools can help understand him), and he can dump the oil/gas stocks just to f*ck with the dumb money (public will flock into oil/gas stocks come Tuesday). I could make a case for speculative longs in USO/UNG, but then again, oil and gas are in a primary downtrend so I wouldn't want to be long them anyway.

'This Clearly Indicates That the Market Is Not What It Was'

Recently released city records indicate that apartments in prime Manhattan neighborhoods are selling for less than their purchase prices — a phenomenon that until now was virtually unheard of in the seemingly invincible New York City real estate market.

Popeye,
Your tone stinks. The US auto companies are run by idiots--agreed--the workers are only as good as the product design allows. What I was saying is that the idiots are saddled with some $1500 in extra healthcare expenses, making a bad situation much worse. That they are less stupid in Europe shows that all other things being equal, domestic idiots are no worse than their dummies.

That our congress refused to raise efficiency standards because Detroit didn't want them, shows that the auto gurus were also addicts. American workers produce very good car--with Asian nameplates. I'm guessing Ford would be better off allowing Mazda run the show--but national healthcare will still be necessary.

"I'm wearing my Sarah Palin hair to work on Tuesday with glasses "

Palin looks like the opening scene of a porn movie, before everything comes off and the hair gets messy...

This Palin thing is evoking some strong emotions among the women I know. Mostly in favor of Obama.

Anecdotally, I'd say that the 50+ crowd sees Palin as a positive, while everyone else is seriously offended. Of course, the younger women I know are all professional women with careers (whether they are married or not). Don't know how common that demographic is in the swing states, although out of 3 women I know of in Ohio, 2 have become 100% Obama supporters because of the Palin choice.

accuweather now projecting Gustav to hit the gulf oil and gas platforms as a CAT4 and refineries in LA & TX as a CAT2. A real mess. Got OIH?

CME Group Revised Labor Day Holiday Hours for NYMEX Energy Products

In response to concerns about Hurricane Gustav, CME Group, the world’s largest and most diverse derivatives exchange, today announced that it has revised its Labor Day holiday trading schedule (all times are Eastern time) for NYMEX energy products. On Sunday, August 31, all NYMEX energy products trading on the CME Globex® electronic trading platform will open for trading at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern), with a 2:00 p.m. (Eastern) pre-opening, for a September 2, 2008, trade date. NYMEX ClearPort® Clearing and NYMEX ClearPort® Trading will also now re-open for trading on Sunday, August 31.

Gustav is supposed to be a 5. Naturally the winds reduce towards the edges.

so far out, it is impossible to say where the eye will cross. Remember the worst is in the right upper quadrant.

Also 30% of storms are not in the cone at landfall when you are this far out. The black line is misleading.

FL in '00 and OH in '04 virtually tied (making point...don't care). PA will be the tied state in '08 (it rhymes...don't care).

So what's the key demographic group that's a presently unknown toss-up? I'd say it's the turn out of lower income whites, and perhaps an emphasis on women. In swing states (as opposed to Kansas), the lower income whites are the "what's the matter with you" group that can vote on "values" or whatever non-issue they're exit polled about.

It's pretty damn clear now that race and gender are the "values" questions of this elections tied state. But I don't think it matters. I think if McCain doesn't croak in 65 days he'll win sizably in the electoral count. He's locked Florida, he's locked Ohio, he's pulling a lock on MI, CO, NH, etc. Only question is who gives a flying f*ck?

The black line is misleading.

Very & the intensity estimate even more uncertain this far out.

Weatherunderground posted a map showing that if it stayed on course Gus would travel over a hot loop then a cooler loop before hitting sort-of-average temp coastal waters... result is weakening over Cuba then rapid re-intensification over the hot loop then some weakening before crashing into land. Likely to be a Cat 3 or something like that by landfall even if a Cat 5 earlier out in the Gulf.

The problem is that some of that Cat 5 time is going to be spent traveling over deep water oil & gas producing areas... I think energyecon's worries about damage there are the greater of the fears... more so than eventual landfall.

Daily allopurinol has kept it bay for 16 years; I get an attack every 3 or 4 years for which I have a ready supply of indomythecin, a strong anti-inflammatory that reduces the pain immensely and the length in time of the attack.

If starting allopurinol, be very aware - one of my friends had a really bad reaction to it, made worse because the doctors didn't recognise it. Seek medical help, tell your doc about what you are taking and the rare reaction possibilities if you find yourself in this position.

"Rob Dawg writes:
Why is everyone discounting the possibility that $115 oil is a premium to the underlying value?"

This is an interesting point. I'm really only interested in the long term trend in oil prices, and don't claim to have any great insight into short term moves. But I see a lot of research that argues that "fair value" for oil is $80 barrel (in 2008; don't want to discuss 20 year forecasts...); plus you can reasonably throw in a $20-$40 premium for short-term disruption risk (capacity is very tight).

Since the oil market has already discounted 5 of the past 0 nuclear wars in the Persian gulf, there's a chance that the pre-existing disruption premium will cover whatever damage we see here. (This is on the wholesale side; I'd expect more retail disruption.)

I think if McCain doesn't croak in 65 days he'll win sizably in the electoral count. He's locked Florida, he's locked Ohio, he's pulling a lock on MI, CO, NH, etc.

I agree - looks grim for O in electoral college count IMO.

If you go to MyDD :: Direct Democracy for People-Powered Politics [a democratic activist website] they have a GREAT interactive electoral college simulator... see the 'map' in the upper left hand corner, click on it & go to town... I've done it a bunch of times and even though mydd 'predicts' O will win... my guess of how states will go tells me McM by a BUNCH...

If the election were held today I'd guess O 217 McM 321... I'd guess the popular vote would be MUCH closer [48-48-4 with the 4 being inde votes]... popular vote doesn't feed the dog.

I really don't see how McM loses even with Trooper Gate Cat Fight Mania...

States:

O: CA, WA, OR, HI, MN, IL, MI, NY, VT, ME, MA, RI, CT, NJ, MD, DE, DC

McM: AK, NV, AR, NM, TX, CO, UT, ID, MT, CO, WY, ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, LA, AR, MO, IA, WI, IN, KY, TH, MS, AL, GA, FL, SC, NC, VA, WV, OH, PA

There are definitely some toss ups I question...

MN, MI for O
IA, WI, PA for McM

But flipping them all toward O still generates a win for McM (O:255 McM:283) though tighter.

People living in some of those states tell me I'm wrong - I don't see how it ends any differently.

dryfly,

Should have been TN...

Actually I'm shocked I didn't make more mistakes as I was rolling the map through my head.

McM - because I'm a moron. It just types fast & I'm not thinking.

One more reason to read his work if you don't already. It's useful, data-mined info without mindless rants, unlike 100% of what Peter Schiff has ever written.

dryfly,

I'm just joshing ya. TH - I thought it was attempted NH; I don't see New Hampshire on the scoreboard. Only point is that it's another "toss-up" that I think will be locked in McM before Nov.

Re: Hoping to avoid a repeat of Hurricane Katrina's disaster where 1,600 people were killed, public officials are actually helping residents leave New Orleans and coordinating their efforts this time ahead of approaching Hurricane Gustav.

Yes, Bush would look pretty stupid to blow this, and continue adding to his death toll, with Katrina, Iraq, systemic financial collapse, etc.... just amazing this boob was never taken out of office! It just goes to show that Americans are lazy and stupid, and that goes triple for The Senate & Congress -- what a bunch if crooks running a zoo! Who cares if either Obama or Mccain win, they are just conduits for more lobby bullshit and we all lose again; why vote??

OK - I'm a lefty liberal. If McSame wins, America will deserve the worst fate predicted by the meltdowners on CR.

Really, what does it take to discredit GOP policies?

After Gustav is done with Cuba, the storm is forecast to enter the warm waters of the Gulf overnight, directly above the Loop Current, a source of deep, warm water that can act as steroids for Gulf storms, leading to rapid intensification, scientists say.

McCain is not much smarter than Bush--he got into the Naval Academy because his dad and grandfather were admirals. I believe he ranked close to the bottom of his class--he really is the clone of Bush and will carry on the "work" of the present administration. Also, he will get to fill 2 Supreme Court seats.

What's freakiest about this Swede isn't that it looks headed to finish off NOLA once and for all, but that it's doing so nearly the exact time of year as its Greek half-sister did.

Dawg,

If ya figure oil "should" be at $80/$90, add a few bucks for "geopolitical risk", add a few more for "weather"...puts ya about $115.

Popeye,

You wouldn't happen to remember all the early Hondas and Nissans (Datsun, back then)...to say nothing of Fiat? They ALL rusted away (except for those that stayed in SoCal, maybe). To the best of my recollection, only Chrysler had an endemic rust problem (Dodge Aspen/Plymouth Volare). How about those CAFE standards?....make a vehicle lighter, it'll get better gas mileage....sure, thinner steel cuts costs, too, (its only within the last 10/12 years that aluminum came into widespread automotive use on mass market vehicles). Its hardly "balanced" to dump exclusively the Big Three.

I wish I had a stock account to trade natural gas etfs. The president can open the strategic oil reserve, but what will replace natural gas stocks? A lot of gas comes from Gulf production. How much? I’m not sure. Fortunately gas stocks are pretty high and the high demand, winter heating season hasn’t started yet. Also I don't know how vulnerable Henry Hub feeder lines are to hurricane damage. My guess: natural gas prices will soar.
(I've got lots of friends in Lake Charles. LA. And they are expecting an evacuation order by tomorrow noon.)

McCain Says Palin a Better Leader than Obama

Might as well confess it now, Americans like mediocrities in high places. Makes them feel more comfortable. Otherwise why would they have elected Shrub twice? America is a nation of mediocrities (the majority) run by other mediocrities. The old admiration for excellence has disappeared. Brains and ability are resented and despised. You tell me why.

“"Mediocrity" doesn't mean average intelligence, it means an average intelligence that resents and envies its betters”

Ayn Rand

PS Obama: Harvard Law, Editor of Law Review

McCain: fifth from the bottom of his Anapolis class.

Lots of Presidential candidates want a Veep who is dumber than they are. Shrub didn't get to choose, since in effect the Veep was chosen for him, to be his brains. But Bush, Sr. chose Quayle, and Clinton chose Gore, and McCain had trouble finding someone dumber than he is until he came up with Palin. She fit the bill.
