it's my tax money, and I would be all for bailouts of:
Fanny Flag and Bernie Mac
Fanny Pack and Freddie Prince Jr
Tammy Fae Baker and a Big Mac
Igor Stra(spelling) and a Ham Sandwich.
It's not a "bailout" and we're not currently in a "recession".
Just to be clear, the "bailouts" and the "recession" will begin five minutes after Obama takes his hand off of the bible at the swearing in ceremony.
The first question we'll need to ask is: Why hasn't he solved these problems yet?
We'll then generously demand that Obama implement our solutions for the looming Democrat Financial Crisis:
Lower Taxes and Less Regulation of the Free Markets!
CR, Stewart is a great choice for an economic analyst. You should feature him as often as possible.
A question, though. Since Richard Syron's compensation from Freddie was $20MM in 2007, is he now the official highest paid person in the federal government?
The hub gets what I usta think as a very nice paycheck from NASA, having a Hopkins degree 'n all, (not to speak of a law degree), but now I think he should go to work for the GSEs. Someone as smart as he is could surely figure out that the math can't work.
And I would love to try and spend all that lovely money. . .
You know, if the government is cranking up those printing presses for a $5 trillion not-a-bailout, I think they should also send me a check for the balance of my mortgage. It's just a crummy $150,000, about what Bernie and the Fed spends in 35 milliseconds. It's all I ask...
I'll always give Jon Stewart credit for being one of the first people on television to openly point a stick at/criticise Bush/Iraq/MSM - way back before it was trendy or safe (and his only audience, according to Bill O'Reilly's research, was 'stoned slackers'). It was a revelation over here in Australia - they have real, thinking, dissenting people in the US - whocoodanode?
If you like Stewart and missed the video about Obama and the Protocols of Zion see it now! Considering his real name is Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz makes it even more intriguing.
Yearning To Learn writes: Colbert has come along. I love him but still dislike Colbert's interviews. otherwise he is classic.
Spot on. Stewart's interviews are often the best part of his show, and certainly the best political interviews on TV. He's nailed people who have squirmed their way through more "professional" interviews. Colbert's are weak and often painful to watch... (but I admit "The Word" makes up for many sins).
Off topic, but last night I talked to a guy I know that is in construction in the bay area. He said he's basically laid off. I asked about unemployment. He said he isn't getting any, because get this there are two options.
a) File for unemployment, which means you're unemployed and the company won't send you on what jobs.
b) Don't file and they'll still give you some work here and there.
In his case he says it's wash. The unemployment wouldn't be much more than what he's making now. So he'd rather 'work' than be unemployed in a down market.
What's scary is the only place on TV that you can get the slapped with unvarnished truth is on a comedy channel. I often watch Jon Stewart as at least he seems to care and will point blank say it like it is. Is this due to the Political correctness run rampant or just due to artistic license?
Either way, Bush is an idiot and the reason that he's lost all credibility as he will never, ever tell the truth without some BS spin on it.
John Stewart is seen in europe as the only credible source of news from america. since what he broadcasts as jokes is usually the truth.
it was the same during the soviet era. the regulators were not very inteligent so they were not able to comprehend some of the books and movies that were openly critical of soviet regime ("Dryon leaves earth" by Vaclav Klicka). i doubt it was translated to english.
A question, though. Since Richard Syron's compensation from Freddie was $20MM in 2007, is he now the official highest paid person in the federal government?
who cares. I have heard endless times that only govt has waste. Private organizations by definition have no waste. So Mr. Syron must be worth far in excess of $20MM. If he truly worked for the govt he would get paid $40MM and do 1/8th the work.
it is not surprising that the best news comes from Comedy Central and the likes of Bill Maher (despite what you think of his politics).
Comedy has been traditionally the truest form of political commentary. In fact, comedy as political commentary predates "serious" political commentary.
In times of emperors and kings it was illegal and often blasphemy to speak against the royalty. But a comedian could make jokes. it was at times the ONLY link royalty had with "the people". there are many accounts of peasant troupes performing comedy acts that left the crowd silent due to the rage of the king, and yet the king could do nothing but pretend to smile and clap. an intriguing "check and balance" from ancient to middle age time periods.
but the comedy and joke must be crafted well in order to make the intended statement. It usually must take excellent intelligence as well as stage presence to pull it off. Some do it well. My favorite is Chris Rock. (as example, can you imagine Carrot Top trying to pull off a Chris Rock gig?)
even on this blog you see comedy used often. it is often easier for people to accept unpleasant truths when it comes in the form of a joke. hence the need for the [/sarcasm] tag.
Both Stewart and Colbert have come to rely on interviewing authors too much. It's a cop out. The authors obviously come for nothing but the publicity for their book and the two "comedians" have some easy material to work with. But the result is less entertainment for the audience. There are lots of books I don't care to hear about, even from a comedian.
The word Satire comes from the satyr play, alternated with trajedies in ancient Athens.
After 25 centuries Lysastrata (sp?) is still relevant, and no reason to think it won't be in another 25 centuries. The Greeks liked the idea of enduring glory. Wouldn't it be nice to go back and tell Aristophanes that he had attained that? He probably thought he was doing some topical funnies that would be gone in no time.
Comedy has been traditionally the truest form of political commentary. In fact, comedy as political commentary predates "serious" political commentary.
Then explain the paucity of political humor on NBC's "Last Comic Standing". It's as if political humor is toxic to these aspirants.
Colbert is one of the most brilliant satirists of our time. His performance at the 2006 WH Correspondence Dinner remains a tour de force. He spoke directly to the face of Bush, Scalia, Gonzalez and the assembled media sycophants, tearing them to ribbons. And he got paid.
The whole thing is amazing, but I'd forgotten how in part 3 he lobbied for Tony Snows'(new) job, " I have nothing but contempt for the media"! then played a video of himself as press secretary, evading questions about everything, especially: 'Why did we go to war in Iraq?
CR - glad you caught this and put it in the CR record. I caught it on its first broadcast and... all you CR brethren were in my thoughts as it played - John really gets it!
And wondering which commentor here on CR is John? Cannabis, elvis, ac, dryfly, surferx? I'm fairly certain he checks in.
Colbert - amazing satire and can ad lib riff and improv like a muther. I wasn't really feeling him... until I saw that White House Correspondent gig - BRASS balls and genius I tell ya!
If you've never seen it, you owe it to yourself to YouTube it.
last!
Give me colbert any day over Stewart.
Ok, I loved that.

People are workin'!
That was great.
Well, not great, but really funny.
Kreepie Kats say Jon Stewart works for the man. (@1:53 mark)
This segment really resonated with me. Almost like Stewart was speaking directly to me.
Do other people burn bowls in the AM?
Just like it is not new taxes, it is a "service fee" or "surcharge." Do they really think we don't get it? We are being governed by retards.
I'd love to backstop Rae Dawn Chong.
Martha Rae, on the other hand, should be left to fail.
BTW, Jon Stewart is a funny man. I think he should start dating Britney Spears and make a country album, too. That would be touching.
I couldn't get the link posted for the story, but it is also here: YouTube -
CSC, you should try a vaporizer. In these lean times, you get much better bang for your buck.
I'd hate to here "Little Annie Fanny"..... FAILED!!
O/T but given the discussion on billions and trillions this is interesting:
Zimbabwe is to introduce a bank-note worth Z$100bn in response to rampant inflation - but the note will barely cover the cost of a loaf of bread

Ben Bernanke and Hank Paulson are you taking notes ?
BB and HP don't give a rat's ass how much a loaf of bread costs.
I am confused who was the guy who sees the glass full and who was the expert on the economy????
it's truly sad how little credibility our president has left.

This is the episode I was talking about when I said the Comedy Central writers read CR.
LOL. But what's the message here? Bush is an idiot so we need to give people like him more control over the situation to make it better?
Does not compute.
Sage Advice from CNN:
Scary economy, real solutions
Problem: Sinking Home Prices
Solution: Buy Now
All right, I'm confused...

Believe the opposite of what the decider says and you will more often find the truth.
These criminals will take your money and tell you its a deposit into your account.
Laughed til tears came. Oh my stars that's funny.

@moldy That's classic.
We're absurd and we need a comedian to tell us.
