This situation is very depressing. Thinking about the economic issues has taken my mind off of the really serious problems - and my heart goes out to the victims.
That slideshow is staggering... All those towns are on the very tip of the delta... when I saw the hurricane path I knew they would be a disaster... it was as bad as I imagined.
Looking at those photos makes me think of another thing you won't hear mentioned right away... all that saltwater that was driven in-land on the storm surge... it will kill even more freshwater bayou & coastal forest... weakening the remaining delta even more... putting the whole area at even more risk for the next storm(s)... if this continues even minor storms will have the capability of over-running New Orleans.
I guess I'm just strange, but thinking about the economic ramifications gets me even more worked up.
I can't help but think that New Orleans shouldn't be rebuilt to its current extent. I mean, there has to be a port there, and the French Quarter is indispensible, but why have any more people living there than absolutely necessary? OTOH, what can we do with a million or more refugees?
Tom - that question will come up as soon as the bill comes due...
Interesting thing to think about... I read somewhere (no link sorry) that something like 70-80% of Americans either now live or will live within approximately 150-200 miles of one of the three coasts... almost all of them are either at risk from hurricanes OR earthquakes OR both like NO... look up the New Madrid fault.
New Orleans isn't the only city going to have to face this kind of a decision.

Children's Hospital under seige
Tuesday, 11:45 p.m.
Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.
Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.
The director has sought help from the police, but, due to rising flood waters, police have not been able to respond.
Bottcher said Blanco has been told of the situation and has informed the National Guard. However, Bottcher said, the National Guard has also been unable to respond.
Where are the comments? Maybe everybody's glued to their TV's in horror like me.
