WSJ will certainly go free. Newscorp doesn't need to make as much money off the online subscriptions, they just want the name for the coming competitor to CNBC (b/c as we know CNBC is a bastion of dirty liberals... or something like that.) The newspaper is important but they don't need to squeeze every dime out of it like the previous owners.
Heck the NYPost hasn't made a dime in years. I think Rupert just likes having a mouth piece to the largest media market in the country.
While I've never been called a liberal (though I've occasionally been called a right-winger), I would have to agree quite a bit with what Krugman is alluding to, just based on my observations over the past few years - I think the US economy is being systematically and probably intentionally broken down and dismantled for profit.
The middle class is the implied victim here.
As an example, I can see no other explanation for deliberately using markets to decouple the financial system from the real economy.
This is being done with a great deal of intensity and calculation - if you've bothered to watch the futures markets as economic data is released, you know what I mean.
I've personally been through a couple of corporate takeovers and I've seen first hand companies being gutted for profit and then tossed aside.
I see a similar phenomenon happening with the US financial system now, and by implication, the overall economy.
While I've never been called a liberal (though I've occasionally been called a right-winger),
That probably tells us more about who you hang around with than about you. I get called 'right wing conservative business jerk' and 'left wing socialist tree hugger' in the same day depending on who I bump into.
My wife just thinks I'm a socio-economic schizophrenic and can't be left alone at cocktail parties (and not because my eyes would chase skirts... that she knows how to manage, firm whack to the head... its that I chase 'conversations'... that, in polite Midwestern company, is totally unacceptable).
Having read the NYT piece on those -- pause, because I'm having difficulty coming up with a good term -- individuals -- note that I failed utterly -- that aren't going to B-school, I would certainly agree that Slash & Burn is the latest methodology. No long term planning need apply or even be considered. By all the merciful deities above, below, sideways and in all higher dimensions, I would dearly love to watch these people bounce and bounce hard. And, if these are what pass for "quants" in that world, I -- again, words fail me. Brainless context-free number jugglers. Digital word salad tossers. Archaeological training and a sideseat to the whole MickySoft/Amazon set of financial whizz-kids gravity-test is a great comfort to me.
I like the big picture theories! I was thinking that maybe the reason for the "systematic" dismantling of the middle class is not a conscious conspiracy at all. Instead its just capitalism, meaning the rich elite, behaving according to its own internal rules. Over the last 100 years, capitalists thought that there was an alternative to their system (communism) and so they gave up some wealth to protect the system. Today, no such fears, so no need to think about it. Instead, they can act to maximize profit.
Today that means privatize profits but nationalize risk, reduce wages at the expense of profits and destroy any safety nets in the system by bankrupting them. The "war on terror is a great cloak for all of this because anyone who objects can be labeled a sympathiser. Also, this war keeps military spending up, but nobody is seriously going to become a muslim because of working conditions, whereas they might have become a communist/socialist/trade unionist.
One other rant, why is it that if you say things are not right you are put into the "uber bear" or as on that "wants to see a disaster". I always theought that it was those that point out faults in the system are actually the ones that want to protect it.
Bets on whether the fees are restored or the access limited shortly folowing the election?
I think it's obvious that the PPT is behind this. They're funding companies and bloggers that compete with the NYT in order to force them to make Krugman free. This makes it appear as if the media is trying to manipulate elections by foisting Krugman's Marxist ramblings on the electorate, which will backfire and make them vote Republican. After the elections, the PPT will pull their funding (moving the money back into gold and anti-short seller moves of the major indexes), the blogs will shut down, and Times Select will return.
Sometimes, I just figure I dont know much about nothing. When I first started working I hardly made enough money to party on, let alone own a home, subprime loan or no. After a few years and a couple false starts, I stumbled onto my career path. My income has jumped 20-fold and since I dont need that much money, I only work part time, maybe a 6-9 month project here and there with months off in between. I have 9 messages in my voice mail right now for projects that I am ignoring because I just dont need the money nor want the work in the near term. My family has a comfortable life. I have a little micro finance project on the side where loans are made to entrepreneurs in third world countries. We have foster children in third world countries. I am definitely not rich and if the truth must be known, I would just as soon not acquire that status if it means selling much much more of my time to someone else. I still believe if someone in this country wants to have a comfortable life, then application of effort and a willingness to learn is about all it takes. I dont even think education is all that important, at least not higher education. Sometimes, I dont understand Krugman or for that matter the Liberal ideology, but I guess the little I do understand leads me to believe it is no better than the Conservative movement. No matter where you look nowadays, it seems theres a whole slew of folks whose sole mission in life is to tell you how you should live your life. Go figure. Im such an idiot. I neither understand them nor want to. Help your neighbor if that is your thing, but for heavens sake, dont mess with my freedom, little though it may be. Im comfortable, thank you very much. I worked for it and so can anyone else who wants to. That is what I believe but then like I said, sometimes, I just figure I dont know much about nothing.
Keep the conspiracy out of what NYT is doing. Go to NYT and read this article:
But our projections for growth on that paid subscriber base were low, compared to the growth of online advertising, said Vivian L. Schiller, senior vice president and general manager of the site, NYTimes.com.
What changed, The Times said, was that many more readers started coming to the site from search engines and links on other sites instead of coming directly to NYTimes.com. These indirect readers, unable to get access to articles behind the pay wall and less likely to pay subscription fees than the more loyal direct users, were seen as opportunities for more page views and increased advertising revenue.
Newspapers are the deadest business in America. Today's older generation is the last real newspaper-reading generation.
Newspapers don't make any sense in the Internet era. Have you ever stopped to think how much effort it takes to throw a newspaper on your doorstep when it's icy and cold in the winter?
I guess its habit but I like to sit back, read the newspaper while eating breakfast, finish with coffee.
Besides, the local papers are sometimes quite good especially re the latest scandals floating around town, detailing the latest political corruption, etc.
For national news though I depend totally on the internet, stopped NY Times delivery 5 years ago.
Great info indeed. Hopefully this means that archive repackagers selling to libraries will now get this. It's very frustrating to miss the NYT because of their boneheaded archiving policy.
Great info! Thanks!!
(And rather deflationary I might add, go figure.)
Rumor has it Murdoch is considering making the online WSJ free, too.
Certainly WSJ editorials will fit in with a certain part of web culture.
Also, WSJ editors will start a new blog, called The Ravings of A Lunatic.
Stag,
If you charge money for something, and no one buys it, then you give it away for free again, is that really deflationary?

Metrics Wonk,
All I can say is that I haven't paid for a "TV Guide" in many, many years. Hurray for free services!
I did NOT have SEX with this bailout:
Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Regulator Eases Asset Limits (Update5) - Bloomberg.com
Wow...congradulations CR and Tanta!
I guess people would rather read Calculated Risk rather than pay for David Brooks.
I know, personally, that the value here is much higher.
Yes...I know that I should put something in the tip jar...cheap SOB that I am.
Best regards,
Now if only Mr. Skin would follow suit
"If you charge money for something, and no one buys it, then you give it away for free again, is that really deflationary?"
Yes. It's certainly costs them to provide it, in servers, bandwidth and maintenance.
Also, WSJ editors will start a new blog, called The Ravings of A Lunatic.
I thought it was to be called "The Ravings of a Lunatic Neocon."
Rupert is the main mouthpiece of the Zionist or Israel Lobby. He sees running these papers as his contribution to the cause.

Now where did I put my meds.
Dr. Deflation,
Good point, I was making the assumption the intertubes are free. Not the case obviously.
Having read the NYT piece on those -- pause, because I'm having difficulty coming up with a good term -- individuals -- note that I failed utterly -- that aren't going to B-school, I would certainly agree that Slash & Burn is the latest methodology. Dryfly I think your problem at cocktail parties may be is that you make to much damm sense all the time
Shocking. Just in time for the election.

Point out any faults in America, you're no longer a patriot either. Brand new world.

As for the Krugman Bolg...anyone notice that his book title "Conscience of a Liberal" was already used by the late Senator Paul Wellstone?
Jeez, thats a bit creepy of Krugman to do that.
Regarding Krugman:
Sometimes, I just figure I dont know much about nothing. When I first started working I hardly made enough money to party on, let alone own a home, subprime loan or no. Hit the Bid, this is what Krugman said about Wellstone back in 2002:
In an age of fake populists, Paul Wellstone was the real thing. Now he's gone. Will others have the courage to carry on?
I believe Krugman's new book is dedicated to Wellstone. I think this is an homage, not plagiarism.
I'm quite sure it not plagarism either, and the title was quite deliberate--and certainly in Wellstone's spirit.
I just would have recommended something like "Conscience of Another Liberal", or some credit to Him in the subtitle, thats all.
its that I chase 'conversations'... that, in polite Midwestern company, is totally unacceptable
Hence you have to come to the internet with the rest of us weirdos.
Keep the conspiracy out of what NYT is doing. Go to NYT and read this article:

It's too much work for Americans.
"The Conscience of a Liberal." Is it good for sales to make yourself sound like a pompous prick?
I guess its habit but I like to sit back, read the newspaper while eating breakfast, finish with coffee.
Besides, the local papers are sometimes quite good especially re the latest scandals floating around town, detailing the latest political corruption, etc.

Bobby,
If more people were like you, we wouldn't need Krugman. ;^)
Progressives only return to fix things when the greed has once again spun out of control.
Great info indeed. Hopefully this means that archive repackagers selling to libraries will now get this. It's very frustrating to miss the NYT because of their boneheaded archiving policy.
ho-hum, shit-caned the MSM long-ago thanks to the likes of CR, Tanta, Russ Winter, and Mish. Hope my dial-up isnt buged.....
