I just dropped in (since I can rarely catch up these days) to let people know that I have been emailing back and forth with nova's sister. Maybe she has contacted others here and I'm just behind the times. I had been reading here on my phone the other night when it was decided and confirmed that nova had died, and the next day I posted to the memorial page the funeral home had set up.

She contacted me because I had mentioned we had conversed via email and at HCN a few times. I was able to stumble around and guide her through finding nova's 27K comments, and she is now reading them. Sorry if this is old news and all know this. I encouraged her to register and comment if she felt the desire, and told her she would be made comfortable if she did. So if she pops up, do what we do.....

And then I thought, well, it's not such a bad thing to have done:

I WALKED WITH ANNE AND JOACHIM

I walked with Anne and Joachim
Through the garden that we knew,
A pleasant time I had with them
Where raspberry and nettle grew

A garden gold with April sun,
Woven shade from leaves just born,
And as we passed the tree of heaven
My heart with sympathy was torn

But they were cheerful, calm and kind,
They told me not to be concerned,
For there are cordials for the mind
Which grow where noonday does not burn

I left them at the garden wall,
Departed through an arch of stone,
Above the entrance trees grow tall,
The tree of heaven grows alone

And from that tree there grows a fruit,
A single blossom that it bears,
The sweetness in it from the root
That heals the hurting of despair

Badlar averaged 12.1 percent in June, about half the 24 percent annual inflation rate estimated by economists.

Libor: The Crime of the Century | The Nation

Forget Bernie Madoff and Enron’s Ken Lay—they were mere amateurs in financial crime. The current Libor interest rate scandal, involving hundreds of trillions in international derivatives trade, shows how the really big boys play. And these guys will most likely not do the time because their kind rewrites the law before committing the crime.

Modern international bankers form a class of thieves the likes of which the world has never before seen. Or, indeed, imagined. The scandal over Libor—short for London interbank offered rate—has resulted in a huge fine for Barclays Bank and threatens to ensnare some of the world’s top financers. It reveals that behind the world’s financial edifice lies a reeking cesspool of unprecedented corruption. The modern-day robber barons pillage with a destructive abandon totally unfettered by law or conscience and on a scale that is almost impossible to comprehend.

We need a 21st century transit infrastructure, but I don't know what that looks like.

If I were a hard-SF writer I'd allow myself solar- and/or fission-powered electrified highways with inductive chargers buried in the road, and the cars driving themselves from LA to SJ.

Taking a train to LA seems so 19th century, alas.

Feds are paying for the capex and state funding is going to wages, so our investment will be a wash more or less.

Madera to Bakersfield is about a third of the ROW, the "easy" third.

RockyR, no, I'm probably headed for LA to try to find work. My whole strategy of taking care of my community with the hope that my community would take care of me was a flat failure. Lots of good done and good accomplishments, but still, I have not been invited into the tribe of commercial society and given a wage paying job of some kind, somewhere. I have lots of favors to cash in, but no job, and no future here. Sad that the experiment failed, but I think I'm a big fish in a small pond, here.

I was amused to post something on here earlier today about favela housing and have Rob Dawg do a public transportation dig at me - it was such a non sequitur. Sounds like the mood here has turned pretty sour.

Syria is fascinating to watch, as an example of the final stages of a society controlled by an isolated elite that has lost all touch with its people. Assad is a fool who did not see his own downfall, and will likely be dead within the year. His incompetence and weakness was of course exploited by the CIA, and now Russia and China see themselves entrenched on the wrong side of history.

The CIA is picking winners and losers for arms recipients and training. I guess we didn't learn with the Taliban / Osama Bin Ladin. I wonder if the Kurds will get their state after all.

Los Angeles is not nearly as bad as I thought it might be; I prefer it to San Francisco, where I'm afraid to fart too loud just in case I violate an ordinance and they tow my car in retribution.

I don't know, Tom. You could work for The Man (haven't most of us at one time or another), have a change of heart, and decide that this is the $hits, and something needs to be done before we blow ourselves up. Several of the top NYC OWSers worked for Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and various hedge funds, and they know how they operate.

Here's an example: I know an excellent personal injury attorney (retired now). He worked for an insurance company for several years. Then he went to UT pre-med for a coupla more years. Then he set up a practice to defend the little guy...the plaintiff...facing the big corp. He didn't sell out. He believed in what he was doing. And it wasn't for the money. He had trust in justice. But then, that was in the '50s-'70s. Times have changed, but I think there are still people out there fighting the good fight. (BTW, he was a staunch Az Republican and a good guy and he had lots of fine Demo friends, but times were different then.)

For those of you who want the bleeding edge on Syria, please see Brown Moses Blog. Many major news sources are surreptitiously stealing his leads.

Just don't park your car on the wrong street at the wrong time, LA will have it towed. Read all street signs very carefully when parking on the street, there are lots of "special" zones.

To honor the passing of a tiny bank, I'm making up a steak dinner.
I'm thinking of broiling some asparagus covered by bacon on the tips. Anyone do that before?
I don't want that much bacon, but I'm thinking it could protect the tips from being overcooked if I just lay it over the tops, and flip the bacon when I rotate the asparagus, I'm not sure if they will cook at the same pace.

RockyR, to let you know the kind of person I am, I was staying with my girlfriend's rich white parents who told me I should stay away from certain areas. I promptly went straight to those areas, made friends with the locals, and had a great time. The people were good, mostly. South central, compton, inglewood, the watts area, these were my first stops. I feel more at home, watched-after, and safe where the people are poor than where they are rich.

The rich areas, Manhattan beach, further north, were not my bag. I like the working class areas more than the down and out areas. I can't believe that some people are turned off by a heavily ethnic population in an area. I find it a sign of a healthy community.
