It's John Mackey, hoping to strike a chord.
He was writing at least three posts a day.

He was just trying to increase his wealth.
There's nothing wrong with his state of mental health.
But his exploits suddenly came to an end.

When will the Feds come to take him away?
Or at least the SEC?
It's not illegal as far as I can see.
It's just dishonesty.
I'd have an important question reg. timing RE purchase/market:
Do you guys know when the peak of lethal ARM resets (2/28 or 3/27) will be? Is it going to be this year?
Was the low-point in credit quality around Q3/06?
This is all to estimate when the peak in foreclosures could be.
As you know, I'm looking to buy next summer.
BTW I can see some weakness in the current stock market rallye and could very well imagine some minor pull back in fall. Always apply good risk management in the stock market.
The ARM Reset graphic that has been tossed about most recently is the one from pg 47 of this report: <a href="http://www.mises.org/books/inflationinfrance.pdf>Mortgage Liquidity du Jour: Underestimated No More. It suggests that the first wave of resets will crest around Oct-Dec 07.
Since this report, there have been many reported attempts to "save the borrower", and so some of this may have shifted.

I DO appreciate the writing, graphs and original reporting of CR and Tanta. It seems like the others are complimenting themselves on the insightfulness, intelligence and pithiness of the their comments on this blog. But I think that the quality of the comments has deteriorated this year.
What is it with all the 4 letter words, hostility and vulgarity in the posts?? Are your vocabularies so limited that you can't express yourselves strongly in English. Last evening was especially bad, I thought. Perhaps too much beer on the minds.
I think that it got to Tanta last night as well - thus her post this AM. Perhaps some the frequent posters from last evening should re-read their posts in the light of this day with Tanta's points in mind.
First post is prompted by my neighbors plight. A for-sale sign shows up a few days ago. Turns-out this guy is not only facing a three yr-old ARM on his $450K "at purchase" digs, but that the Curves franchises he bought into three years ago were PUT ON CREDIT CARDS!
Now it's collapsing. There is no protecting some people.
Well, that was unexpected. I can't believe Mr. Infantino still has so many of his CD's in print. I guess that's one advantage of not having your work subject to a major label contract.

via Doug Noland: July 10 - Financial Times (Jenny Wiggins): "Toast at breakfast may soon be more of a treat than a staple after Premier Foods, the owner of Hovis bread, yesterday said it was preparing to raise bread prices for the second time in six months. The pending increase - which the company attributed to rising wheat costs - is merely the latest in a series of price increases food and drink companies have been trying to pass on to consumers this year. The series has seen costs of making bread, beer, yoghurt and chocolate as well as dozens of others packaged food products become increasingly expensive. In the first half of the year, Lehman Brothers' ingredients cost index - which covers cocoa, coffee, oats, tea, soyabeans and milk, among other commodities and which is based on spot rates - rose 14.9%. That follows a 16.5% increase in the second half of 2006. The biggest increase has occurred in powdered milk prices. These have nearly doubled compared with the same period a year ago. Barley prices have also shot up 53%, while corn prices are up 68%."

Yes, there are plenty of locations in the country where the economy is still good. Especially in areas that did not have a large increase in home prices. Well you might want to be careful doing that - I did something similar about six months ago, was reported and stopped by the police right in the middle of it all - they searched me, my car & went through my digital pictures one-by-one.
I could have protested but they would have brought me downtown, got a warrant and THEN searched me, my stuff & gone through the pictures.
I let them go at it right then & there - I had nothing to hide. Plus they did a check on my ID & car registration and confirmed I was staying at the hotel I said I was at - I was on the road.
Why? They said they wanted to be sure I wasn't scouting the place for a terrorist attack or trying to 'make porn'... shoot up skirts or something.

Too bad "it" in this context means defend the value of "money". It would have been nice if "it" in this context was: allow excessive non-productive credit growth. But of course, he didn't get the job by writing about the root cause of The Great Depression. Heaping the blame on the gold standard was exactly what his patrons wanted to hear -- not that bankers were accountable.
Oh well, what else can be expected from a monetary system of mice and men?
While the rich became richer during the 1920s, unions were weak and workers were unable to enjoy the benefits of their improved productivity. At his Baton Rouge plant, Henry Ford employed armed thugs to terrorise his employees against collective action. Unable to maintain their share of the economic surplus, workers experienced a decline in real wages during the decade and corporate profits rose as a percentage of national income. Capitalism, however, requires consumers as much as savers and demand was maintained by the massive expansion of consumer credit, then called "instalment purchases." Radios, fridges, cars, and clothes could all be purchased on credit. By the end of the decade, when outstanding instalment debt had risen to $6 billion, it was estimated that around an eighth of all retail sales were made on credit. There was a decidedly speculative element in the growth of instalment credit: present consumption was being financed with anticipated earnings. Put another way, in their appetite for immediate gratification, the consumers of the 1920s were devouring their future. When the future eventually arrived, they found the cupboard bare. At the time, however, instalment purchases were seen as yet another beneficial new era development. Credit and consumption, it was argued, formed a virtuous circle since from the immediate increase in prosperity would come the ability to pay off debt.

The two assessors should scrap every appraisal on the subprime portion of the $503 billion of CDOs sold globally in 2006, according to Mehernosh Engineer, a London-based credit strategist at BNP Paribas SA. Because people were able to borrow money without credit checks in last year's freewheeling mortgage market, the rating companies have no right to use inductive reasoning to predict the likely defaults on subprime CDOs.
Their models are basically unable to predict any `normal' behavior due to this overriding fraud factor,'' Engineer wrote in a research report this week. The right thing for the rating agencies to do for the 2006 vintage would be to withdraw all ratings.'' Strange I think BB was pretty hard on the bankers in that piece. Nor do I believe he blamed gold for the crash - just that by 1929 the gold standard couldn't fix what was already broken.
Friedman showed pretty convincingly that monetary contraction is NOT the way to climb out of a deflation... BB was clever enough to have learned that much.
But the question did Bernanke learn the root causes of the crash leading to contraction as well as he grasped the post-crash Rx?... Who knows, you don't get that from the piece.
by Gary Dorsch of Global Money Trends newsletter. He writes,
"US Treasury chief Henry Paulson, and former chairman of Goldman Sachs, 'monitors the financial markets closely,' and has reinvigorated the infamous 'Plunge Protection Team,' which comes to the rescue of the US stock market whenever nasty revelations come to the surface."
So what is the "big idea" now? Mr. Dorsch writes,
"At the moment, Paulson's grand strategy is to offset losses in the US housing sector with big gains in the stock market, to prevent the US economy from sliding into recession", while the Federal Reserve provides the financing, in that "The Bernanke Fed is preventing borrowing rates from rising at a time of explosive loan demand for US corporate mergers and takeovers, by rapidly increasing the US money supply."
"Since the Bernanke Fed discontinued the decades-old reporting of the broad M3 money supply in March of 2006, the growth rate of M3 has accelerated from an 8% rate to a sizzling 13.7% clip, its fastest in more than three decades."
Re: sizing up the economy by local signs of consumption.
The housing market in California's central valley is pretty much toast; restaurants and stores aren't crowded, either. There are for sale signs on every block in some neighborhoods, primarily lower-income neighborhoods where people who shouldn't have bought, did; and of course new homes are standing vacant.
Some exceptions: here in the valley where the sun bakes down like hellfire and the AC runs straight through five months of the year, the few developers who offer solar poered/energy efficient housing are doing pretty well. This guy is selling out his energy-efficient development in Sacramento:

Dobbs - I've been saying to do this for years. It requires some 'intelligent salesmanship' (oxymoron I know) to point out the long term value but I believe it is a sellable concept and now more than ever.
That concept applies in EVERY part of the country - just that the designs aren't the same. In my part of the world we run heat for 6 plus months but only about 3 months is it really intense... Okay how about better passive solar (like a small greenhouse patio) that catches heat on those days & maybe a little heat pump for the cloudy days? By not turning on our monster winter scaled furnace we'd save a ton over 10 years. Plus the heat pump would double for AC in the summer - up here we get maybe 10 days a year where AC is necessary.
Side note: heat pumps & solar don't cut it here in the depths of winter - days are too short, sun angle too low and heat pumps don work at 20 below. But Oct-Nov and Mar-April... absolutely.
BTW - I have friends in the building trades who are now hurting who I've bounced these ideas off and they look at me like the GM car salesmen look at me when I tell them I want 50 mpg... so I've quite arguing with them & buy VW diesel Jettas instead. I let my wallet do the arguing for me now.
And I'm not talking a 'weird hippie commune' like development either - just smallish, efficient & somewhat sustainable homes designed specifically for the local conditions. What is so hard to understand about that?

dryfly: I was referring to Ben's paper in Essays on The Great Depression.
To understand The Great Depression is the Holy Grail of macroeconomics. --Essays On The Great Depression, Ben Bernanke
There is never an acknowledgement of too much unwise credit issuance. It is easy to see how lending out an infinite amount of money is the true problem. The bankers always think the problem is that not all the debt can be paid back. Not paying back all the debt is cheating something, stealing from the future -- something the boomer generation has perfected and handed down to their children. Whether it is economic sustainability or midwest topsoil, who cares? Some technological breakthrough will save the day. Besides, it worked for all those previous collapsed civilizations, didn't it? Can you believe what Paris Hilton was wearing in People last week? Like, oh my god!
So does CPI have an adjustment to handle something like the food supply being contaminated with melamine? I guess poisoned food is substitutable for real food in the eyes of the government.
dryfly: The specific topic of study was the correlation between abandonment of the gold standard (read as the abandonment of any fixed standard value of money) and time to recovery. It is pretty obvious that the quickest route to recovery from too much debt is to just forgive the debt, but that is only treating the symptom. So the situation seems much more like that of Ben as Catholic priest than that of a crusader for the holy grail of truth.

Margin loans climbed in tandem with the stock market in the second half of the 1920s. By October 1929, brokers' loans and bank loans to investors had reached a total of nearly $16 billion. --Devil Take the Hindmost, Edward Chancellor

Games up for the mathematical charlatans on Wall Street:
The two assessors should scrap every appraisal on the subprime portion of the $503 billion of CDOs sold globally in 2006, according to Mehernosh Engineer, a London-based credit strategist at BNP Paribas SA. Because people were able to borrow money without credit checks in last year's freewheeling mortgage market, the rating companies have no right to use inductive reasoning to predict the likely defaults on subprime CDOs.
Their models are basically unable to predict any `normal' behavior due to this overriding fraud factor,'' Engineer wrote in a research report this week. The right thing for the rating agencies to do for the 2006 vintage would be to withdraw all ratings.''
CDOs Lose Marbles; Credit `Kerplunks!': Mark Gilbert (Update1) - Bloomberg.com
I'd like to see the size of the ripple through the system by the sudden arrival of so much uncertainty. Gaussian my ass.
Hi, my name is Power Distribution, and I'm here to collect my toll.
Strange I think BB was pretty hard on the bankers in that piece.
What the ^&^#% is all this S$%#^$% about any #@$@#$^%$ "G" rating?
Buddy,
What do you mean by 'at purchase'?
(It does sound like your neighbour is toast.)
Sage,
I read once that Warren Buffett made one his first BIG contrarian investments by doing exactly the ground-level research you refer to. AMEX IIRC.
Does this makes sense:
by Gary Dorsch of Global Money Trends newsletter. He writes,
"US Treasury chief Henry Paulson, and former chairman of Goldman Sachs, 'monitors the financial markets closely,' and has reinvigorated the infamous 'Plunge Protection Team,' which comes to the rescue of the US stock market whenever nasty revelations come to the surface."
Fallen Leaf Treasure Homes - Building a quality home of lasting value

PPI & CPI on tap this week. Concensus for core is at 0.1%, and 0.2 overall. Sounds a little low to me. Could be some nasty reactions in the markets...

dryfly: I was referring to Ben's paper in Essays on The Great Depression.
