Luskin's Apology

This is the thing with people of, how should I put this, a certain ethical quality -- claiming benefit of doubt and the right to being treated "fairly" for themselves, while putting falsities and below-the-belt rhetoric to others, and accusing them of disingenuity.

Moral values, I figure.

I have a number of GOP friends who voted almost straight ticket Dem last election... they did it to 'save the GOP'... their logic was if Bush gets four more years with Frist & Hastert... the GOP could get swept out and be a minority party for a generation or two once again... if they don't get wise and fast and there is no indication of any of them getting wise.

I was never a 'republican' but often voted for some - even put signs up and walked door-to-door for some like Arnie Carlson - Gov of Minnesota in the 90s...

But even then he won the governorship inspite of, not because of, the state GOP apparachiks - instead they nominated a true blue religious neo-con extremist and it was only after a last minute expose of a sexual scandal involving minors and a hot tub that the GOP nominee pulled out and Arnie stepped in and won.

Arnie was the classic fiscal conservative - socially 'tolerant' republican... not liberal or conservative but 'your social life is none of mine or the states business' republican...

When he ran for re-election the party didn't renominate him (unbelievable - standing GOP governor in a solid Dem state and they nominate a right wing Atilla the Hun instead...) Arnie beats his brains out in the primary then goes on to win the state easily again...

The state GOP faithful hate him to this day... hate Arnie more than they hate any of the Dems. That is the kind of GOPer Luskin is...

CR, you can't change them... so vote against them and save 'your' party... and help save us all.

And there is no problem with being polite if one does not compromise on the facts, and, where it is due, the proper rhetorical support for one's arguments.

dry fly, I proudly worked for the Kerry campaign in '04. That probably says it all.

Best Regards! Back to economics ...

Great Ceasar's ghost!

I am in awe of your wisdom - Luskin actually did it.

As promised, I owe you a book from your Amazon Wish List.

Probably a waste of time w/ this fellow, but it's amusing to watch him work.

fatbear, thanks! I appreciate the book offer, but the nice comment is more than enough.

Best Regards!

Tempest in a teapot - or Much Ado About Nothing - sums up most of what Luskin writes. This apology - as weak as it is - is the most one could have hoped for from him.

CR

Though you will find that I had already posted the correct comment by Warren Buffett on Brad DeLong's blog before Brad's post or yours, I too was puzzled by your post and went back to the original to check. A mistake was easy to make and easy to correct when noticed, and should have nothing to do with being huffy as several people were to Brad. We try to be careful; we make mistakes.

Anne, some people aren't interested in correcting mistakes - they apparently have other motivations (like attempted character assassination). Luskin sent me several emails in the last 24 hours (I'm just ignoring him now), but here is his most recent comment:

"the matter of substance [is] ... an entirely irrelevant matter."

In the business world (my background), we would try to get passed the personalities involved (and any finger pointing) ... and substance would be the ONLY relevant matter.

Best Regards.
