OT, from the Progress Report (Center for American Progress):" WINNERS AND LOSERS: As the SB-1070 legal battle rages on, a growing list of stakeholders is taking shape. A local Arizona TV news station recently discovered that "two of Brewer's top advisers have connections" to private prison giant Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). Paul Senseman, Brewer's deputy chief of staff, is a former lobbyist for CCA and his wife continues to lobby for the company. Chuck Coughlin, who leads her re-election campaign, chaired her transition into the governorship, and is one of the governor's policy advisers, also happens to be the president of HighGround Public Affairs Consultants, which lobbies for CCA. Brewer's connections to the CCA are significant because the company currently bills $11 million a month to the state of Arizona to house immigrant detainees, and if SB-1070 is successfully implemented, its profits would soar as it would take responsibility for imprisoning immigrants arrested by Arizona police. Brewer herself, who has essentially built her campaign around the law, has also benefited from signing off on SB-1070 in terms of her local popularity. So far, Brewer has raised over $1,104,935 just for her legal defense fund. However, Brewer's star may not shine forever. Arizona public schools are experiencing a drop in enrollment which could account for a drop in millions of dollars of federal funding. Arizona's Office of Tourism is reporting a $12 million loss in canceled hotels and reservations."
It would seem that SB 1070 may be partly about utilizing nativism to increase private prison profits.

The private prison will then hire the prisoners out to the state to build roads at $50 per hour per prisoner. Enterprising if you ask me.
Meanwhile, any pay that goes to the prisoners will be withheld to pay for the costs of incarceration. Sorta like slavery. The cost of benefits just equals the rate of pay.
I think Whitman will win. As far as Boxer's seat goes, I sincerely wish that we could just cancel it and have 98 senators. Maybe that will be the case when we devolve, default and become like Puerto Rico in regards to our relationship with the USG.

Perhaps CA should not only issue IOUs, but accept IOUs as forms of payment for payment due to the state. And then, all it takes is to issue IOUs with no expiration date and it would've solved it's budget problems.
It can then sustain it's budget indefinitely or even do a proper STIMULUS/Infrastructure project.
Of course, this will put FEAR into the Fed and bankers.
Thing is, will we notice any difference in service level with the furloughs? Even before the furloughs, we needed to time our visits to the school district office carefully if we want to catch hold of someone who can actually help us.

If elected, I think many will be surprised how pragmatic Jerry Brown will be. Not that many on this board will not complain but I believe he is one of the few if not the only one who can significantly influence a strong democratic legislature. Should he get there, it will be interesting to watch if the Republicans will pay ball.

It may well go up in the short run. However, it will be massively offset by savings on Welfare, housing, extended prison terms, crime fighting, medical bills, education...
And over the longer term, a deterrent to illegal immigration will eventually cut severely into any private detention profits.

Nothing has changed. The small recovery and now the slowdown in that recovery are nothing more than economic noise around the main trend. We are in a depression of a classical nature. It's not the Great Depression, and this one isn't "great" yet. However, we remain in a depression and even if a dating group says it ended briefly, then resumed, it makes little difference. July 28 (Bloomberg) -- A House committee passed legislation today that would legalize some Internet gambling, allowing U.S. residents to place online bets with companies licensed by the Treasury Department.
The measure, sponsored by Representative Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, would roll back a law designed to block such wagers. That four-year-old law, which took effect in June, bars banks from processing payments to offshore gambling websites.
“I have opposed this bill for years, but I am slowly changing, said Representative Brad Sherman, a California Democrat. “The best reason for this bill is the prospect for revenue.”
McDermott’s proposal would require Internet gambling operators to pay a 2 percent tax to the federal government on betting deposits and a 6 percent tax to states. The federal treasury also would collect taxes on gaming-company profits, and bettors would pay taxes on winnings.
The economic sensitivity to higher energy prices never abated. The job market never improved. State finances never improved. Housing never improved. The flucuations were just noise.

Actually, whoever mentioned The Dead Kennedys might have it right - great name. Crazy guys too. Their lead singer, Jello Biafra, ran for Mayor of San Francisco and in a field of 10 candidates, he came in 3rd, running on a platform that included things like "No one allowed in the Financial District unless wearing a clown suit". Candidates 4 through 10, all serious politicians already holding office, were NOT pleased.

Meg Whitman has a plan to fix all this. She wants to get rid of capital gains taxes in Cali. It will only cost the state another 10 billion in revenue but I have a feeling most of Meg's income would then be tax free!
Their lead singer, Jello Biafra, ran for Mayor of San Francisco
Um, but then it gets complicated:
In October 1998, former members of the Dead Kennedys sued Biafra for nonpayment of royalties. According to Biafra, the suit resulted from his refusal to allow one of the band's most well known singles, "Holiday in Cambodia", to be used in a commercial for Levi's Dockers; Biafra opposes Levi's because he believes that they use unfair business practices and sweatshop labor.[21] The three former members claimed that their motive had nothing to do with advertising, and that they had filed suit because Biafra had denied them royalties and failed to promote their albums. Biafra maintained that he had never denied them royalties, and that he himself had not even received royalties for rereleases of their albums or "posthumous" live albums which had been licensed to other labels by the Decay Music partnership. Decay Music denied this charge and have posted what they say are his cashed royalty checks

This might get into one of those heated political discussions, but there are reasons why that might be a great idea. Cap gains are taxed at 10.3% (or 11.3% - I forget) in Cali - probably the highest in the nation. I know a lot of high-income folks who have deferred cap gains in Cali, who plan on leaving Cali, taking their already high Cali income tax payments with them, so they can cash out their gains in another state of residence. Cali is doing all in its power to drive out business and high-income folks, to be replaced by a wave of Arizona illegal immigrants. The income shift will NOT be beneficial for Cali. Doing something to motivate the high income (and high tax-paying Californians) to stay might be a good idea. As it is now, many are about to say "Hasta la Vista"
Anybody know if the "working thinly" part of this is significantly more common than in the past, or has this been the norm for a while?
My friends who hire teens use this as a norm, due to high turnover, plus it puts a lot of kids into the "must buy company clothes with a discount" bucket. My son worked Abercrombe, the initial "uniform" was $250 @ 50% off. Daughter is a little more frugal, can you hear her money scream?

so if i were Antigua, and if it were allowed, I'd re-sue the US in the WTO. Otherwise, it seems as if the feds banned online gambling to close the off-shore startups and allow the big players to catch up.

Don't bet on it. I know many wealthy that have already left, & they made sure to do it early in the year to make sure their cap gains would be taxed in a lower tax state. Socialism - Gonna leave a lasting nasty mark.
But these same high income folks don't want to take a loss on their expensive real estate that has declined in value... I think the flight of the wealthy will be more of a trickle when they realize they can't get get their cash out of their Cali real estate.
I'd disagree. These are people who are sitting on tens of millions of unrealized capital gains, and damned if they're gonna give Cali over 10% of it. Most bought their homes 20 years ago, so they're not underwater, and for the few who may have bought recently, they have no motive to stay and pray that their 5% down payment on their now-underwater house comes back - that down payment was a nothingburger compared to their investment portfolio. If they're really tied to their home, they'll rent it, move to a state with no income tax, cash out their cap gains after a year, then move back to their Cali home. But most are just halfway out the door already. They do the math, and in two minutes, they start making their plans....
This had occurred to me. But I thought I was being too cynical.
It's Amway with teen clothing.
Oh yeah, my friends (the women) from college who went into retail from fashion degrees, etc , all drank the Kool Aid, never had any money, always had stuff. I think its more of a "training to buy" for young adults.
BTW, this happened to a relative of ours who's a parish priest in Detroit:
On Wednesday I was going around getting sponsors for our bulletin and as I was coming down Springwells a van came barreling down the road at 60 miles an hour. I wasn’t going fast enough for him so he laid on the horn, skidded to a stop behind me, then cut off the road in front of me. He got out of his van and came up to my window screaming and yelling and ranting. I realized that this was going nowhere fast so I just said, “I apologize, I made a mistake. Sorry.” At that point he pulled a knife out and waving it in front of my face, said “I’ll show you sorry”, and threatened to kill me. Needless to say I put my car window up. As he continued threatening me I took a picture of his license plate (he was from Ohio). Then he ran to the back of my car, read off my license plate number, and said he was going to track me down and I’d be sorry. Then, as he got back into his van, he refused to go, waving his arms like, “what ya gonna do?” I did nothing, I just sat there figuring “why bother”. Then he backed up real quick as if to hit my car (which he didn’t) and then he took off, peeling out.
The Dutch couple I spoke of earlier, remarked how it seemed to them in their 3 weeks in our country, that we had almost assumed a 'bunker mentality', and road-rage over much ado about nothing certainly makes me want to stay home~
It's going to be fun to watch as people with means who were treated like prey rather than assets leave the high cost states and take thier piles with them, elsewhere.

House Panel Passes Bill to Legalize Online Gambling (Update1) - Bloomberg.com
BTW, the furloughs Arnold is ordering - will they be repaid retroactively once a budget is in place?

I always thought "Mothers Pride" was kewl.
